"The first Poe Cup took place in 1897," said Weems, standing on a podium and speaking through a mic. "In a way to honor Nevermore's most famous alumni and to celebrate what all outcasts share: community, perseverance, and determination. Today, we saw all of those values on display."
She turned to the side, lifted a trophy, then handed it to Enid, who was standing on the podium next to her.
"Whoo!" Enid lifted it upward, causing every person who was standing there to shout in joy, raising their arms and chanting until the very ground seemed to shake.
"Why is it black?" Ash whispered, turning his head toward those standing near him. "I mean… isn't a trophy supposed to be gold? Am I wrong?" He shifted his eyes to both Ajax and Xavier, who giggled at his words.
Ash then turned to Eric, who was standing in front of them, looking forward.
"Come on, why the sad face?" Ash said, moving closer and covering Eric's shoulder with his arm. "Look at the bright side," he continued, causing Eric to glance at him from the corner of his eye. "Because of me, we got second place."
Everyone laughed, and even Eric couldn't help but giggle.
"Ready to go?" Ajax said, walking toward them. "I heard the cafe is serving McDonald's."
Ash's eyes brightened, already imagining the pleasure of a Big Mac. But all thoughts disappeared as he noticed the figure of Wednesday moving toward them.
Ash instinctively stepped back, hoping she wasn't approaching their group, but misfortune seemed to be on his side.
"Wednesday…" Xavier spoke, a smile still hanging on his face as he approached. "Heard you finally beat Bianca."
"It was bound to happen," Wednesday replied, her voice blunt and expression unchanging.
Xavier noticed that her eyes seemed to be scanning. They didn't move much, but hovered just enough for him to notice.
"So…" he said, his face faintly blushing. "Need me for something?"
"I'm not here for you," she shot back, turning her face to the side, staring directly at Ash, who sighed before approaching.
Xavier frowned, visibly bothered by her words, but mostly curious about who she was looking at. He turned to where her gaze landed, and his eyes widened, disbelief flickering across his face.
"Wednesday…" Ash said, walking toward them. "Okay… let's go…"
"You guys know each other?" Xavier interrupted, stopping Ash, who was now pushing Wednesday away, mid-retreat. "... How?"
His heart almost dropped as he noticed the faint but visible grin forming on Wednesday's lips. It was the first time he had ever seen her smile, but this one was far too mischievous to make him comfortable.
"He didn't tell you… did he?" Wednesday asked bluntly, the grin still lingering.
"Tell me what?" Xavier asked, raising his brows.
"We should go," Ash said, holding Wednesday by the shoulders and nearly pulling her away. "Please don't…" he nearly begged in a whisper, but was interrupted.
"What are you talking about?" Xavier pressed again. "Tell me what?"
"That he and I are engaged," Wednesday said, causing Xavier and the three boys behind him to widen their eyes in shock.
Ash snapped immediately, pulling her with him the moment her words landed.
But Xavier stood frozen, still staring at Wednesday, who would occasionally glance back at him, that faint grin never leaving her face.
Then they were gone, vanishing within a crowd of unnatural, subhuman teens.
Vanishing into the kin they embodied.
---
"The fuck was that about?!" Ash shouted softly, pulling Wednesday into a narrow alleyway.
"It's not my fault that you're keeping secrets from your friends," she said, staring at him as he held his head in frustration. Her head tilted slightly, waiting as he clicked his tongue and sighed. "I want my answer," she demanded, causing another sigh to escape his lips.
He looked up, and their eyes met. Then there was silence, one undisturbed even by the noise of chaos echoing from the other side.
"You took it… didn't you?" Ash asked, his tone stripped of all amusement.
She didn't hesitate or try to refute. She just nodded.
"Why?" he shot.
"A contingency if you refuse," she said without hesitation.
"What happens if I refuse…"
"Its pages will burn," she interrupted, stopping all questions at once.
Silence. As their eyes still locked.
"Will you die for me?" she asked again, her voice almost a whisper.
His brow twitched. His heart nearly skipping.
"... Yes," he said.
Then she walked past him, her footsteps fading into the distance.
Leaving with it a single sentence that lingered.
"I'll see you tomorrow."
Then silence.
Just as the beginning. Just like the end.
Veyth; eternal.
