Chapter 57 - Farming

NOte: Changed Plow to Rototiller

...

In battle, the move Rototiller might seem unimpressive.

But when used on farmland, in forests, or even in gardens, its effectiveness far surpassed that of a hundred Hyper Beams.

After reclaiming the wasteland, the Dugtrio slumped slightly, clearly exhausted. The move demanded enormous stamina.

"Lord Lucien, what kind of magical beast is this?" one of the knights finally blurted out, unable to hide his astonishment. He stared at the freshly tilled soil that stretched before him, the rich, loose earth practically glowing with life.

The farmers nearby exchanged looks of utter disbelief.

They had labored for days to cultivate just one field like this, and this Pokémon had done it in mere minutes?

Lucien met their gazes calmly, his expression serene.

"This," he began, "is the power of certain magical beasts."

He spoke slowly, as if recalling words from memory. "I once read of them in a volume from the Royal Library. Its name is Dugtrio, a subterranean beast that lives deep underground. The move it just used is called Rototiller."

He gestured toward the fertile soil beneath their feet. "Rototiller channels Ground-type energy through the land itself. Fields cultivated by this move are said to yield stronger, faster-growing crops."

A murmur spread through the crowd.

"To think such a thing exists…" one of the farmers whispered, awe mixing with disbelief.

Lucien smiled faintly. "This is the power of magical beast."

In truth, he didn't yet know just how dramatic the effect would be. It might not be miraculous, but for their struggling settlement, even a small boost could mean survival.

After all, Dugtrio wasn't some divine being.

There were greater Pokémon in legend, like Landorus, the deity of fertile earth who replenishes the soil's vitality, or Calyrex, the King of Abundance, who can make plants bloom and ripen with a single gesture.

But for now, this humble Ground-type's gift was enough.

"Take good care of Dugtrio," Lucien instructed. "Work together to cultivate the fields. Sow the seeds as soon as the soil settles."

Everyone nodded at once. "Yes, Your Highness Lucien!"

Lucien knelt slightly, meeting Dugtrio's three sets of eyes. "You'll stay here for now and help us farm. In return, we'll make sure you have plenty to eat, you won't go hungry again. I hope you can get along with everyone."

"Dig…" the Pokémon replied softly, its tone filled with guilt, and gratitude.

When Lucien departed, the farmers stood awkwardly, hoes in hand, exchanging hesitant glances with the strange creature before them.

But there was no time to waste.

The earth was soft, the air was mild, and the seeds had to be sown before the next rain.

As the farmers began their work, Dugtrio watched quietly for a long moment. Then, as if gathering courage, it burrowed once more into the earth.

At first, the people working in the nearby fields could only watch in stunned silence.

The very creature that had once ruined their crops was now diligently tilling the soil, its three heads focused, its small body trembling from exhaustion, yet refusing to stop.

That sight… moved them deeply.

Lord Lucien had been right all along. This monster wasn't evil, it had only damaged the fields because it was starving.

And now, knowing the truth, it was pouring all its strength into repairing the harm it had caused.

Slowly, the farmers' fear and resentment softened into sympathy.

When all the fields had finally been plowed, a few farmers approached the panting Dugtrio, their shadows falling across its three heads.

"Trio?"

The Pokémon looked up warily, only to see several kind, hesitant smiles.

One of the farmers gently placed a small waterskin and a few ripe fruits before it.

"You must be hungry after working so hard, huh? These are fruits monsters can eat, go on, they're for you."

Dugtrio blinked, startled.

"Dug."

Its eyes shimmered faintly before lowering to the food. It hesitated for a moment, then began to eat, quietly, gratefully.

The farmers stood watching, their earlier tension replaced by warmth. For the first time, both sides understood each other.

After lunch, Lucien sat in the lord's hall, quietly sorting through the matters of his growing territory.

The flap of the tent lifted, and Elif, the old butler, stepped inside, his face lit with uncharacteristic excitement.

"Your Highness Lucien! The farmland, it's incredible! In just one morning, we've cultivated more soil than we could've managed in weeks!"

Lucien's lips curved into a knowing smile.

"I know. That must be the work of Dugtrio, isn't it?"

Elif blinked, momentarily speechless, then quickly realized what that meant.

Ah, of course, His Highness had discovered another magical beast. This one, it seemed, was a true blessing for the farmers.

"If I'm not mistaken," Lucien continued, raising an eyebrow, "the crops have already been planted?"

"How did you know that, Your Highness?" Elif asked in surprise.

Lucien chuckled softly. "Because I know that beast gift. Its power is made for farming."

He leaned back in his chair, a quiet sigh escaping him.

Pokémon were, without question, the greatest productive force in the world.

With just a single Dugtrio and a handful of farmers, they had accomplished what would have taken dozens of laborers days to complete.

Lucien could hardly imagine what would happen if they ever found more Pokémon like it.

Originally, he had planned to visit the fields that afternoon to ask Dugtrio to help till the land near the planned orchard. Once the soil was ready, they could finally plant the Berry seeds he'd been saving.

But after hearing Elif's report about how tirelessly Dugtrio had worked since morning, Lucien changed his mind.

"They've done enough for one day," he murmured to himself.

He wasn't the kind of lord who would exhaust his people, or his Pokémon, for the sake of progress.

So, he decided to postpone the orchard's cultivation until tomorrow.

That would give both the workers and Dugtrio time to rest.

Once the Berry trees were planted, Lucien would begin Snivy's next phase of training.

Most of Snivy's techniques were Special Attacks, and mastering them required precise control over energy flow.

Moves like Giga Drain, Energy Ball, and Leaf Storm demanded deep focus and refined manipulation of Grass-type energy. Even Leaf Blade, though technically a physical attack, required the user to condense that same energy into razor-sharp leaves.

That was when an idea struck him, simple, elegant, and efficient.

He could have Snivy use its Grass-type energy to nurture the Berry crops directly.

By guiding and infusing the plants with its energy, Snivy could accelerate their growth, nourish the soil, and learn to control its own power in the process.

Two goals accomplished at once, training and cultivation.

Lucien allowed himself a small, satisfied smile. "A perfect plan," he thought.

But before he could develop it further, a shout came from outside the hall, excited and breathless.

"Your Highness Lucien! Come quickly, you won't believe what we've caught!"
