Elian woke her at 3 AM.
Not with words — with a hand on her arm and a shaking that wasn't fear. Raven's eyes opened to the dark of her quarters and the weight of her son's hand trembling against her skin and the particular quality of his breathing that she'd learned to read the way other mothers read cries: not scared. Grieving.
"Mama."
She was upright before the word finished. Soul Ascension reflexes — the body responding to alarm faster than the mind could evaluate the source. The room: dark, quiet, the living-wood walls humming their ambient frequency. Veyr against the wall, pommel faintly violet. 7T9 on the bedside table, awake (7T9 was always awake), his star-metal body oriented toward Elian with the focused attention of a processing entity that had already identified the boy's state and was waiting for the biological parent to catch up.
