The chamber was the size of a cathedral.
The dome arched overhead — four hundred meters across, the ceiling a membrane of translucent organic tissue through which winter moonlight filtered, distorted and green, casting the entire space in the light of something submerged. The walls curved inward and upward in ribs of dense organic material, each rib pulsing with bioluminescent veins that converged at the apex of the dome like the spokes of a wheel meeting at their hub. The floor was smooth, warm, the living surface humming with the six-second heartbeat that had accelerated as they approached.
