Naida found out the way she found out most things, which was by lying on cold ground at an hour when sensible people were asleep. Ninety minutes was the outside of the interval. She gave it two hours, then two and a half, and somewhere in the third hour she stopped waiting and started listening to how the silence was shaped.
At dawn she went to the north trunk, which had hesitated reliably for four months, and lay on that.
Not a weakened sweep. Not a longer interval. Nothing.
"Report it as good news," Marcus said when she came in. "Please. I've had nine days."
"It's not good news." She sat without being invited. "You survey a field until you've got it. Then you stop, and you go and do the thing you were surveying for."
