"It was working fine until—" She stopped.
"Until you got emotionally involved."
"I didn't plan to."
"No one ever does." Her father's expression softened slightly. "But now you're here. And eventually, Haejin is going to learn things about his father that may or may not destroy him. And you'll want to be there for him. Support him. Comfort him."
"Is that so wrong?"
"It's not wrong. It's dangerous."
"For who? For me? For the company?"
"For both of you." He leaned forward again. "Haejin is going to be vulnerable. Broken. And if you're there, if you become his support system during this, he'll attach to you. And you to him. And when the media finds out—and they will find out—it will destroy you both."
Soorin felt tears prick her eyes. "So what? I'm supposed to abandon him? Pretend I don't care?"
"I'm saying be smart about this. Protect yourself. Protect him."
"How?"
Before he could answer, Calista appeared with tea and a plate of cookies still warm from the oven.
