Chapter 68 - A Promise In The Dark

Elise eventually cried herself to sleep.

Her fingers were still curled tightly into Davon's shirt, as if letting go might make everything real again. Davon stayed until her breathing evened out, until the tremble in her shoulders faded.

He brushed a loose strand of hair from her face.

"I'm here," he whispered, more to himself than to her.

Carefully, he leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to her forehead — lingering for half a second longer than necessary — then gently freed himself from her grip and slipped out of the room.

The hallway was silent.

Too silent.

Davon felt it immediately.

He stepped outside the dorm and looked up.

Silas was sitting beneath Elise's window, back against the tree, head tilted slightly upward — watching.

Waiting.

Davon moved without sound.

"You're brave," Davon said calmly, stopping a few feet away. "Or stupid."

Silas didn't flinch. He didn't even look surprised.

"She sleeps peacefully," Silas replied softly. "You vampires don't own the night, you know."

Davon's eyes darkened, crimson flashing briefly. The air around him grew heavy — not violent, but commanding.

"She is not yours to watch," Davon said quietly. "Not yours to think about. Not yours to touch."

Silas finally stood, turning to face him with a smile that didn't reach his eyes. "You think you can scare me?"

Davon stepped closer.

"I don't scare," he said. "I end."

Silas's smile faltered for just a fraction of a second.

"If you do anything — anything — to hurt her," Davon continued, his voice low and deadly calm, "I will erase you. From this school. From every place you hide. From every future you think you have."

The night seemed to hold its breath.

Silas stared at him, jaw tight, then laughed softly. "You're already too late."

Davon didn't answer.

He turned and walked away — confident, unshaken.

Above them, behind the glass, Elise slept on.

Unaware that two worlds had just collided beneath her window.

And that one of them had just been warned.
