"So you think that Reid loving me is a weakness?" I ask staring into the eyes of Reid's intimidating sire. I'm inside his office, one that I'd visited without informing him beforehand.
"And this type of behavior right here is why I thought to have that talk with him." He starts not breaking the eye contact, and none of us dare blink. "You're not one to be easily influenced by emotions, and yet here you are. In my office, so uncalled for." He states.
"Such a high horse for you to be on with that assumption don't you think?"
"You tell me. I am an official here Ms. De Rue. It's my job to be concerned about the safety of all magical beings. And you are soon to be a sage."
"And yet with the knowledge of another sage practicing chaos magic, you still have time to woe over my feelings for your son."
"No I'm concerned about his feelings for you. Don't get me wrong I don't rebuke love at all. Its a beautiful thing. But a Psythelian and a Kylte....especially of Reid's kind, him being around you not only makes him a high target for the perpetrators murder, but his feelings might cloud his judgement at a time when we need him to be very objective in a dire situation."
"And you doubt him? Your son? The formidable most ranked agent at Meridian right after the board and you lack faith in his ability to be the one thing you trained him to be his whole life?" I ask sarcasm dripping off my voice like lava melting onto the sides of a volcanic mountain. "Well might I remind you that said formidable agent was susceptible to act on his feelings the very day your mother died." He adds as if that's supposed to make a good argument.
"As if he had encountered a Psythelian before in his life, let alone two of the most powerful ones at the same time." I pause for a moment. "I give him more credit considering I've seen powerful arcanists go insane when they encountered my mother before let alone a kylte."
"Why are you really here?" He asks after deeming this little discussion mentally futile to have.
"On the matter of my ascension as a Sage in four months." I start and I can see and feel his demeanor change. He's actually eager to have this conversation. "We have an agreement." Is all he says.
"I know, and I abide by it still. But I expect the board has thought ahead as to plant spies that are not Vatics."
"Of course we have, we did that way before this announcement, we did that immediately your amnesia was reported to us last year." He says and a small sigh of relief leaves my chest for a moment. Maybe I'll get the answer I need from him.
"Well then I guess it doesn't hurt to ask what happened six months after my mother died. She'd told me she was going to die in six months time before the mishap. I'm sure Reid has told you this part but I need to know the rest from you."
"V. Warden hasn't told you that already?" He asks and for the slightest of moments I sense some tension but it dissipates just as quick as it formed. My brows furrow and I'm a bit confused. Was it above agent clearance? Probably not since he seems to think I should know this already. "No he did not." The answer is simple but my tone sounds slightly accusatory. His blue eyes meet mine as if in warning that I should not insinuate that Wardens lack of sharing information is due to malicious intent.
"Well I should still like to know what happened agent K. Riveka Sr." I say and sounds like a command. A small smirk finds his lips and he looks so much like Reid in this moment but his face returns back to its all time seriousness.
"Remember five months after you'd met Reid and Garth, when Garth had shown up that one night at your doorstep all terribly injured with this terrifying tear on his thigh?" Is the first question he asks. And have a feeling that everything is about to go downhill from there. "You might wanna take a seat for what you're about to hear next." he says way too calmly for my liking. I know that because Reid has the same demeanor about him before he delivers gut-wrenching news.
"Garth had a lead on something they were working on and he got attacked and that's how he ended up with that fatal injury across his femur." he explains.
"What were they working on?"
"I honestly don't know how to explain this but what had shocked us to our core after that was when he showed up to Reid's house miraculously healed the next day. And even though it's well known that psythelians posses exceptional healing skills when they are needed. What was not expected was for you to be able to heal a wound left by chaos magic." he finishes and even though I cannot quite follow, I'm shocked beyond words as well.
"Well why am I just finding out about this now?"
"There's much you don't know Reika. And I thought Warden told you most of this already."
"But you still haven't actually told me what did happen that day."
"Well for starters, chaos magic is a raging bitch." he says standing up and letting out a heavy sigh. he continues on as he paces around. "The agent who injured Garth, was injured as well. We think that is a side effect of the force. so we know they experienced an injury equally as fatal. Your mother's grave was visited as well. I'm guessing because they couldn't get to you they needed to get her ashes and drain whatever magic was still in them to heal their thigh wound. What they wanted, we truly don't know because some of Garth's memory was heavily tampered with as we came to find out later." he finishes. Well fuck.
