Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Sister in the Crosshairs

Rain hammered the industrial grid in sheets so heavy the streetlights smeared into pale streaks. Elena kept low behind Daniel as the motorcycle cut through flooded alleys, the dual cuffs cold against her wrist. The scrambler held the outbound signal flat for now. Every turn tightened the window before Adrian's server received another clean packet.

Anya's downtown studio sat on a corner block of converted warehouses, its second-floor windows dark except for one flickering television glow. Daniel coasted the bike into a service bay two buildings over and killed the engine. Through the curtain of rain Elena counted three black Vance Security SUVs already parked tight against the curb. Tactical silhouettes moved under awnings, rifles held low, visors scanning.

"They're early," she said.

Daniel's gaze tracked the perimeter. "Holt doesn't wait for midnight when the target is soft. You take the rear fire exit. I'll hit the municipal substation node from here and drop the block. Forty seconds of dark should be enough to clear the hatch." He pressed a compact tablet into her hand. "Signal when you're inside. If the front door goes, you run whether Anya is ready or not."

Elena nodded once and slipped into the downpour. Water sheeted off her coat as she crossed the alley, boots silent on wet concrete. The rear fire door of the studio building hung slightly ajar, latch plate already forced. She eased inside, climbed the narrow service stairs two at a time, and reached the studio landing just as a muted thump sounded from street level. Someone testing the main entrance.

She pushed the studio door open. Canvas and half-finished sculptures crowded the open loft. Anya stood in the center of the chaos, throwing clothes and hard drives into an open duffel while a wall-mounted screen looped grainy footage of Elena's face under the caption Missing Heiress—Vance Family Silent. Anya's dark hair clung damp to her cheeks. Her hands shook hard enough to drop a stack of design tablets.

"Anya."

Her sister spun, eyes wide, then staggered forward and crushed Elena in a fierce, paint-scented hug. "Where the hell have you been? The news is saying you vanished from the penthouse. His people called me twice already. I told them nothing, but cars started circling an hour ago."

Elena pulled back just far enough to meet her eyes. "We have maybe two minutes. Listen. The marriage was a setup. Adrian catalogued me in a black ledger with other names. Acquired. There's hardware under my skin, a control chip that was supposed to activate and wipe whatever he didn't want left. He's coming for you next as leverage. You have to come with me right now."

Anya stared at the faint blue smear visible beneath Elena's cuff. "You're serious."

"Deadly. Daniel Cross is outside. He's the next name on that list. He's cutting the power to the block so we can reach the tunnels." Elena grabbed the half-packed duffel and shoved the last drive inside. "No arguments. Leave everything else."

Anya's mouth opened, closed, then set hard. She snatched a small leather portfolio from the workbench and slung it across her body. "Fine. But you explain every single detail once we're not about to die."

A metallic clank echoed from the stairwell. Bootsteps. Multiple. Elena's tablet vibrated once. Daniel's single word flashed across the screen: Now.

The lights died. Every screen, every emergency exit sign, every residual glow from the street cut to absolute black. Rain noise flooded the sudden silence. Below them, men cursed and fumbled for night optics.

"Move," Elena whispered.

She pulled Anya toward the rear wall where a section of floorboards sat slightly raised beneath a dropped canvas. Daniel had already forced the concealed maintenance hatch from below; the lid lifted under Elena's fingers with a soft metallic sigh. Ladder rungs dropped into darkness that smelled of wet concrete and old electricity. Anya went first without hesitation. Elena followed, pulling the hatch shut just as the studio's front door exploded inward under a controlled charge. Wood fragments sprayed the loft. Tactical lights stabbed through smoke. Commander Rachel Holt's voice cut sharp through the static of open comms.

"Breach complete. Locate the sister. Secondary target is high probability."

Gunfire stitched the empty loft above them, short disciplined bursts hunting movement that no longer existed. Elena and Anya dropped the last few rungs into a narrow service corridor. Daniel waited at the junction, face lit by the dim red of a handheld beacon, energy sidearm raised toward the hatch.

"This way. Metro maintenance spine runs half a mile before the first junction cameras. Scrambler still clean for another twelve minutes if we stay low."

They ran. Water dripped from cracked overhead pipes. The tunnel walls pressed close, tiled in faded municipal green. Distant rumbles of trains vibrated through the concrete. Behind them the hatch remained sealed, but the gunfire above had stopped. Holt would already be sweeping for heat signatures and alternative exits.

Anya kept pace at Elena's shoulder, breathing hard but steady. "That chip. Can they turn it on while we're down here?"

"Not while the cuffs hold," Elena said. "But the countdown is still running underneath. We get you somewhere the matrix can't reach, then we map the rest of the relays."

Daniel led them left at a T-junction, then down a steeper ramp into the deeper service levels. The air grew colder. Bioluminescent strips along the rails cast thin blue edges that barely outlined their path. Somewhere far above, generators would be cycling back online. Holt would expand the search grid the moment power returned.

Elena felt the faint pulse under her skin try to climb and fail against the dual interference. She kept one hand on Anya's arm, grounding herself in the simple fact of her sister still free, still choosing every step. The ledger had taken enough. It would not take this.

They rounded a final curve into a wider maintenance chamber where three forgotten rail carts sat abandoned under decades of dust. Daniel sealed a secondary gate behind them with a magnetic lock of his own design. The echo of pursuit faded into the deeper dark of the tunnel network.

Anya leaned against a rusted pillar, catching her breath. "Okay. Start talking. All of it."

Elena looked at Daniel. He gave a short nod and began scanning the chamber for residual sensors. Rainwater still dripped from her coat. The biometric window ticked closer in her mind, but for the first time since the gala the variables included someone she refused to lose. She drew a slow breath and began to explain everything the ledger had already written in bloodless ink.

Above them the city block flickered back to life one streetlight at a time. In the studio, Rachel Holt stood amid splintered wood and empty canvases, visor scanning nothing but rain and the cold absence of targets. She keyed her comm with practiced calm.

"Subjects escaped into underground. Expand perimeter to all transit access points. Mr. Vance will want an update."

In the tunnels the three figures kept moving, deeper into the black, the distant sirens already hunting the wrong surface.
