Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: Fire Style · Ash Pile Burning

" Ding!"

"You were killed by Jōnin Meimuda using Wind Style. EXP +240!"

After reviving, Kairen immediately opened the system interface. His eyes lit up, and in an instant he exchanged for a Fire Style ninjutsu.

"Successfully exchanged B-rank ninjutsu Fire Style · Ash Pile Burning!"

Ash Pile Burning was the Fire Style ninjutsu used by Asuma. It expelled a cloud of smoke-like gunpowder from the mouth, which then exploded, dealing continuous high-temperature and explosive damage to enemies.

"Brat, go die!"

A Sunagakure elite Chūnin swept past with a blade, suddenly stabbing it straight into Kairen's heart.

Immediately after, three more Suna ninja surrounded him.

Kairen bared his teeth at them, letting out a cold smile.

"Feel pain!"

He rapidly formed hand seals. The fire-natured chakra in his body underwent complex transformations, becoming a large mass of smoke-like gunpowder.

With his Byakugan's precise control, Kairen opened all 361 of his chakra points, forcing the smoke-like gunpowder out.

In an instant, four or five Suna ninja were enveloped by Kairen's black smoke.

The Suna ninja smelled the stench of gunpowder and felt something was wrong.

"Run!"

But it was too late. Kairen gently exhaled a small flame from his mouth.

"Rumble—!"

The explosions continued without pause. The black smoke, like thunderclouds gathering in the sky, pressed down with destructive energy that made hearts tremble.

" Ding!"

"You were killed by your own Fire Style explosion. EXP +9!"

Kairen's body dispersed into a puff of white smoke before reforming again.

Shuriken whistled through the air, slicing across his shoulder.

Enduring the pain, Kairen turned and immediately fled with a Body Flicker.

Meimuda looked at the charred corpses of the Suna ninja on the ground, feeling a pang of regret.

"Damned brat, who knew he'd be this troublesome?"

"Captain, what should we do? His smoke can still explode—we can't just rush him carelessly."

Meimuda gritted his teeth. Losing four or five men couldn't be left unavenged.

"Keep chasing! I don't believe his chakra is infinite!"

" Ding!"

"You were poisoned to death by Special Jōnin Kageida Hanpei's needle. EXP +5!"

Reviving, Kairen spotted a figure keeping his distance from him.

Brown hair, body covered in knives—he finally saw this trap-specialist Tokubetsu Jōnin.

"Earth Style: Swamp of the Underworld!"

Suddenly, a huge muddy swamp appeared under Kairen's feet, its suction pulling him down rapidly.

Kairen immediately detonated an explosive tag strapped to his chest, bursting into smoke and drifting slowly above the swamp.

But as soon as he revived, a shadow loomed over him.

"Earth Style Barrier: Earth Prison Hall!"

Imai lowered his hand seal, looking at his earth-style barrier with a sneer.

"I don't believe you can escape this time."

Meimuda stepped forward with a sigh of relief.

This was an advanced Earth Style ninjutsu that absorbed chakra. Trapped inside, Kairen's chakra would eventually be drained, leaving him unable to use that smoke technique again.

Kairen poured all of his EXP into exchanging explosive tags.

About sixty tags detonated at once. In that instant, the earth-style barrier became a massive bomb.

"Rumble—!"

Quick as lightning, Meimuda body-flickered to snatch Imai away, barely avoiding the explosion.

Kairen blasted apart Imai's Earth Style barrier, revived again, and opened the Gate and Byakugan to flicker away.

Meimuda clenched his fists tightly, his eyes bloodshot.

"Damned brat… who'd have thought he had such a vast amount of chakra to fuel those explosions! Could he be a descendant of the Senju?"

"Captain, do we keep chasing?"

Meimuda glanced around. The silhouette of Kairen was already fading into the distance. Only then did he realize they were now in the territory of Konoha's frontline forces.

"Stop. Tonight, we'll count this as our loss. Another day, we'll settle this with that brat."

"Understood, Captain!"

Seeing that the Suna ninja had stopped chasing, Kairen suddenly slowed down, leaning against a tree.

The forest night gradually fell silent. Cold wind blew past. Though his bare chest felt chilly, his heart burned with excitement.

As expected, the battlefield suited him perfectly. In just one night, he had mastered an A-rank genjutsu, a D-rank genjutsu, and a B-rank Fire Style ninjutsu.

The wind grew colder. Kairen exchanged from the system space Sasuke's white outfit, removed the Uchiha crest on the back, and put it on.

This outfit was truly flamboyant, casually exposing the chest—basically a rip-off version of the Uchiha attire.

But before Kairen could admire himself much longer, several flak-jacket-clad ninja surrounded him.

Seeing the Konoha forehead protectors on their brows, Kairen let out a sigh of relief—he'd finally run in the right direction.

The leading Konoha Jōnin studied him carefully.

"A kid?!"

Kairen pulled out his assignment order from his back and handed it to the Jōnin.

The Jōnin took it, looked it over, then examined Kairen again.

"Moku Kairen, Genin?!"

The nearby companions exchanged shocked glances. Sending a Genin to the frontlines—what was the village thinking?

The Jōnin returned the assignment order and gave Kairen a look of pity.

"Who did you offend to be sent to a place piled with corpses like this?"

Kairen said nothing.

Without further comment, the Jōnin led him to a small frontline base and placed him in a tent.

It was already late into the night. The Jōnin told him to register and report tomorrow.

The night passed without incident.

...

The next morning, the weather was clear.

Kairen wandered with his assignment order until he reached a cave, guarded outside by two Special Jōnin—proof someone important was inside.

Though the outside looked simple, the inside was finely built, with earthen walls shaped by Earth Style ninja. Light was abundant.

A dark-skinned, muscular middle-aged man scrutinized Kairen, then suddenly sneered.

"I heard some civilian Genin dared step on the Hokage's son's head. Looks like that's you."

Kairen said nothing, lowering his gaze to notice the man's name.

Shimura Masao!

A member of the Shimura clan—one of that old dog Danzo's people. Surely not a good sort.

Shimura Masao scribbled something on a paper, then handed it to Kairen.

Kairen looked carefully—it was a frontline garrison location.

"That's your defense zone. Area A, Eighth Line. You'll guard against Suna ninja raids there."

Kairen studied it closely.

It was on the farthest outskirts of the Konoha-Suna frontline—an area prone to constant raids.

A flicker of joy stirred in Kairen's heart. The more dangerous, the better.

Shimura Masao kept watching Kairen's expression. Seeing no resistance, but even a hint of pleasure, puzzled him.

Why would anyone be happy to be sent to die? Or was this child just stupid?

Impatient, Shimura Masao waved him off.

"Get lost! Don't get in my sight anymore!"

Kairen shot him a cold glance before turning to leave.

Outside, the two Special Jōnin looked at him with pity.

Ignoring them, Kairen flickered away.

One Special Jōnin frowned.

"Didn't his Body Flicker just use fewer hand seals?"

His partner shook his head.

"You must've seen wrong."

"Maybe…"

From inside, Shimura Masao's voice called out.

"Jūjirō, keep an eye on that kid these days. The moment he dies, report to me immediately!"

"Understood, Masao-sama!"

...

Kairen dashed about ten kilometers and soon reached his post—Area A, Eighth Line.

It was a barren hill, littered with stones, with no defensible terrain—an awful defensive position.

Climbing over the rocky slope, Kairen noticed fresh corpses scattered about—not dead for long.

He squeezed into a crevice under a tilted boulder, sat cross-legged, rested his hands on his knees, and formed a seal.

"Eight Gates: Gate of Opening—Open!"
