Chapter 101 - Chapter 101: Am I Investigating Myself?

Chapter 101: Am I Investigating Myself?

Lu Ze's previous state was similar to that of a critically ill elderly person—requiring hard work and offering no hope.

Caring for a gravely ill elderly person until their death is difficult, especially if the person clings to life, as it is immense torture for both the caregiver and the patient. Even the deepest affection can be gradually worn away by repeated exhaustion.

In his previous life, Lu Ze had seen at a village funeral that the person who truly cared for a critically ill elder until the end couldn't cry at the funeral. While others wailed in various ways, his face showed a mixture of relief and confusion.

And at that time, the half-mad Lu Ze had no chance of recovery, only causing his sister to labor ceaselessly, so he could somewhat understand Cecilia's mindset then.

Therefore, after hearing her confession, Lu Ze was not angry; instead, he felt even more pity for his sister.

"Cecilia. It's alright, Cecilia, look at me, and answer a few questions."

Lu Ze reached out and grabbed his sister's arms, shaking her to make her look up. "You had the thought of killing me and then committing suicide, but did you actually do it?"

"No."

Cecilia, who was crying, was forcibly shaken up by him and said after a moment of stunned.

"Even for a single day, did you ever slack off in caring for me?"

Lu Ze continued to press.

"No, but I—"

"Then what else is there to say!"

Lu Ze interrupted his sister, "It's just because you were too desperate at the time and had some extreme thoughts, it's nothing major, and compared to what you sacrificed in caring for me, it's nothing!"

He almost rudely concluded, cutting off his sister, "Besides, you were so exhausted during that period; the Goddess would forgive you if She heard your story. As for me, I wouldn't care even more."

Under Lu Ze's chaotic comforting, Cecilia finally managed to calm down.

But after she calmed down, she reiterated her previous request to become a Beyonder.

"Brother, I once avoided it and wanted to give up on your life, but not this time," Cecilia said firmly. "I want to become a Beyonder to help you."

Lu Ze gave a wry smile because he truly couldn't find a reason to refuse.

"Alright then. After I go to the underground market to buy the auxiliary materials, I'll turn that Beyonder characteristic into a potion for you."

He had no choice but to agree.

It was already very late. After comforting Cecilia, the clock's hands were almost at the 3 o'clock position. After eating, a powerful drowsiness hit him. He quickly washed up and prepared to rest.

Ms. M was waiting for him in front of the restroom.

"A very touching sibling bond."

She said with a smile.

"None of your business."

Lu Ze muttered sullenly and went straight back to his room.

Because he went to bed too late, Lu Ze was too sleepy to get up the next morning. It took him a great deal of effort and determination to crawl out of bed.

After washing up and having breakfast, he greeted his sister and prepared to leave.

"Brother, don't forget to buy the auxiliary materials."

His sister specifically reminded him.

"I remember."

Lu Ze sighed inwardly and replied.

He left the house, got on a public carriage, and found no empty seats, so he had to stand.

He leaned against the carriage wall, staring out in a daze.

It was still because he was too weak to protect his sister, which instead put her in danger and led her into that world.

Lu Ze's flawlessly handsome face showed no expression, his eyes slightly dimmed.

A female passenger sat nearby, wearing a light green knitted dress with ruffles. From her attire, she looked like a company clerk. She quickly and secretly glanced at Lu Ze a few times. Seeing his calm face, she suddenly felt sad for some reason, her heart feeling tightly clutched.

"Sir. Are you alright?"

She couldn't help but whisper.

In this conservative era, it was rare for a lady to speak to a strange man on her own initiative. "If you're not feeling well, you can sit here."

Lu Ze looked up and gazed at her with his azure eyes.

"Thank you, I'm fine."

He smiled politely and said.

The female clerk's face quickly flushed. Looking at that slightly melancholic handsome face, her heart felt both sweet and wistful.

The carriage arrived at Zoteland Street, and Lu Ze got off at the intersection, walking into the company.

"Good morning, Lu Ze, your eye bags are very dark."

Rosanne greeted him at the front desk.

"Because I was on duty at Charnes Gate the day before yesterday, and I slept very late last night," Lu Ze yawned. "I'm going to the lounge to catch up on sleep. Don't let them disturb me if there's nothing important."

The best thing about this job was that it was genuinely leisurely when there were no incidents, and no one cared if you slept during work hours.

So he slept soundly in the lounge all morning, only coming out at noon to eat the "work meal" delivered by a waiter from Old Weil Restaurant. After eating and drinking some black tea, he started to feel sleepy again.

"Lu Ze."

Just then, a figure in a black trench coat came from behind the partition and called his name. This person had deep-set eyes and a receding hairline; it was Dunn Smith, the captain of the Tingen City Nighthawks team.

"Captain."

Lu Ze quickly put down his teacup. "Is something wrong?"

"A female corpse was found downstream of the Tasok River, in a terrible state, with organs seemingly removed. After investigating the clothes on her, the police discovered she was Mrs. Sharon, a well-known figure in Tingen City's high society." Dunn's expression was very serious. "The police handed the case over to us. My preliminary judgment is that there's Beyonder power involved."

Huh?

Mrs. Sharon?

Didn't I throw her into the river? How was she discovered so quickly?

Lu Ze couldn't help but be startled, but he immediately feigned a puzzled look. "Mrs. Sharon? I think I've heard that name before."

"I know, she's a famous socialite in Tingen's high society!" Rosanne exclaimed excitedly. "Many nobles and wealthy merchants were her suitors. She actually died? I wonder if it was someone who couldn't have her and, out of love-turned-hatred, brutally murdered her."

"Rosanne, don't talk nonsense."

Dunn said helplessly.

"Ah! Sorry, Captain!"

Rosanne immediately became obedient after Dunn glared at her and turned to slip away.

Dunn sent Rosanne back to the front desk, then looked at Lu Ze and said, "Klein and Frey have already gone ahead. Let's go soon too. I hope your abilities can be put to use. You don't know how many important figures are pressuring the police to solve the case."

"Yes, Captain."

Lu Ze quickly went to the lounge to change into his police uniform, thinking to himself as he walked, *Am I investigating myself?*

The anti-divination ritual has already been performed, so Klein shouldn't discover anything. Then I'll just say some random things and lead the clues elsewhere.

Hmm, I'll say I sensed a corrupted aura from the corpse, that Mrs. Sharon's death was the work of the Aurora Order, and then expose Mrs. Sharon's identity as a Demoness. If I combine truth and lies like this, they definitely won't find out.

Lu Ze quickly came up with an idea.

As long as the case is handled quickly enough, he should still have time to go to the market to buy materials for his sister.

Finally, chapter one hundred. Hooray!
