Chapter 18: Messenger - Part 1

The Discovery

The corridors of SPD Delta Base echoed with hurried footsteps as Boom raced through them, clutching his homemade radio device like his life depended on it.

"I can't drop this, can't drop this, gotta get to Cruger, gotta get to Kat," he muttered frantically, his usual clumsiness replaced by urgent determination.

"Coming through, sorry!" he called out to surprised personnel as he barreled past them in the corridor.

When he reached the recreation room, his momentum carried him straight through the elaborate magnetic ball and stick structure that Syd and Bridge had been constructing.

"Hey!" Syd protested as their careful work collapsed around them.

"Me no—this radio important with—with Cruger and—and Kat and Rangers—just follow me now!" Boom stammered, barely pausing as he continued his frantic journey.

Curious and concerned, Syd, Bridge, Sky, and Z followed him to the Command Center, where they found Commander Cruger reviewing tactical reports while Kat worked at her science station. In a corner, almost unnoticed, Naruto sat quietly at a secondary console, the Sentinel Knight's sword form resting within easy reach.

The Message from Tomorrow

"Cadets, I've told you before this is not a place of play," Cruger said sternly as the group burst in.

"Not play—big trouble! Listen!" Boom protested, his excitement making his words tumble together. "I've been working on this for a while now, uh, on my own time—I built a radio receiver."

"How cute, we built a radio and he wants us all to hear it," Syd said with amused condescension.

"No!" Boom interjected urgently. "You have to hear this. Anyway, uh, I was thinking—where do radio waves go when we're done listening to them? Or radio waves from yesterday, or even, you know, ten years ago? Out in space, that's where! So I built this receiver to pick up free radical radio waves in space, thinking I'd maybe get, you know, the 1932 World Series, or even an old presidential debate. But—but no. Just listen."

As Boom activated his device, static filled the air before a desperate voice broke through:

"If anyone can hear this, please send help. Today, July 11th, is the 15th anniversary of the Troobian takeover of our planet Earth. July 11th—the same day Space Patrol Delta fell, leaving us defenseless. The Troobian forces have flushed out all but a few pockets of freedom fighters. We have sent out Omega, but have not heard any word. Have to sign off. July 11th, 2040."

The Command Center fell silent as the implications sank in.

"Guys, come on. A radio broadcast from the future? Not possible, Kat," Jack said skeptically.

"Well, if Einstein's theory about time is correct, it's possible," Kat replied thoughtfully.

"Hello—keyword 'theory.' A thought, not proven," Jack countered.

From his position at the secondary console, Naruto looked up with a grim expression. "It seems Boom's radio isn't just connected to space, but to time as well. The Morphing Grid has the power to make people travel through time—like with the Time Force Rangers. And the Energems once let the Dino Charge Rangers travel through time too."

The Rangers turned to him with surprise. "How do you know all that?" Bridge asked curiously.

Naruto hesitated, his hand unconsciously moving toward the Sentinel Knight's sword form. The blade pulsed gently with encouraging energy, and the ancient warrior's voice whispered in his mind: "Tell them, my student. They need to understand."

Taking a deep breath, Naruto met their eyes. "Because I tried it once. I tried to go back in time and save my parents."

The revelation hung in the air like a physical weight.

"But you were stopped," Sky observed quietly.

Naruto nodded. "By the Morphin Masters."

"Who are the Morphin Masters?" Bridge asked, his natural curiosity overcoming the heavy atmosphere.

"They're ancient beings who prevent misuse of the Morphing Grid.," Naruto explained. "They understand that the Morphing Grid itself isn't evil or good—it lets anyone access its power. That's how the Dark Energem was formed. So Boom's machine could be right about receiving signals from across time."

Commander Cruger's expression had grown increasingly grave during this exchange. "Cadet Jack, you may be right, and I hope that you are. But today is July 11th, 2025—the day that broadcast claims SPD fell. Do you want to take any chances?"

As if summoned by his words, a shimmering white ball of light drifted silently into the Command Center, hovering undetected near the ceiling. Its presence went unnoticed by all except Naruto, whose enhanced senses picked up its familiar energy signature—the same protective force that had aided them before.

The Enemy Strikes

Aboard Gruumm's terror spacecraft, the emperor watched with satisfaction as Morgana sparred against two orange-headed Krybots. Her enhanced abilities made short work of the mechanical soldiers, and Gruumm applauded as she destroyed them both.

"In the future, you'll be training with Krybots. I can't have you destroy my best robots, love, can I?" Gruumm said with dark amusement.

"I need no future training," Morgana replied confidently. "I will unleash a power upon the earthlings as they have never seen before. I called on an old friend to help—you know him as Shorty."

"Shorty, yes. He does have an appetite for destruction," Gruumm mused.

"His strength is unmatched. He's just the kind of muscle I need to help me defeat the Rangers."

"And if he can't?"

"I have a backup plan," Morgana said with a cruel smile.

"Then go. And if you succeed, I will turn you back into your precious Mora."

Forest Encounter

Back at SPD Delta Base, alarms suddenly pierced the air. Jack, Bridge, Sky, and Syd quickly assembled in the Command Center while Cruger received the incoming reports.

"Broadcast has been verified, and our first alarm has sounded," Cruger announced grimly. "Where is Miss Delgado?"

"After the broadcast, she kind of freaked out," Z's voice came through the communicator from somewhere in the city. "I'll notify her."

"Go, Rangers," Cruger commanded.

In the woods outside New Tech City, Z was trying to process the dire warning they'd received when her morpher crackled to life.

"Hey Jack, what's up?" she answered.

"Z, it's real. It's starting downtown."

"I'll meet you there."

As Z prepared to head back, a familiar voice called out from the shadows.

"Hello, Z. You've been blasting any dollies lately?"

Z spun around to see a young woman stepping into view—beautiful but with an unmistakably dangerous aura.

"Do I know you?" Z asked warily.

"Oh yes, you're the one who scorched Cindy Sunshine. Remember?"

Recognition dawned on Z's face. "That was your doll. I thought it was—"

"Mora's, it was. Let me introduce myself, Ranger. I am Morgana. Wanna play?"

Without warning, Morgana launched an energy blast at Z, who barely managed to dodge.

"Okay, we could play like that," Z replied grimly.

Downtown Battle

Meanwhile, the rest of the Rangers had reached the emergency site, where they found a stocky monster demolishing vehicles with disturbing enthusiasm.

"Freeze! SPD!" Jack commanded as they arrived in their Ranger forms.

"Hey, we are talking to you!" Syd added.

The monster—Shorty—turned with a dismissive laugh. "Me? You must be joking."

"Does it look like we're laughing?" Jack replied.

"Okay, fine. Stop it," Shorty said mockingly before leaping high into the air.

The Rangers dove aside as Shorty crashed down where they'd been standing, his impact creating a crater in the asphalt.

"He's a tough one," Syd observed.

"We're tougher," Sky replied confidently.

"Fire!" Jack commanded.

The Rangers unleashed their Delta Enforcers and Jack's Delta Blaster, but to their shock, Shorty simply redirected their energy blasts back at them, sending them scrambling for cover.

Two Fronts

Back in the woods, Z realized she was outmatched and morphed into her Yellow Ranger form.

"SPD Emergency!"

"I've got a shiny outfit too," Morgana replied, a helmet materializing around her head as she powered up.

The battle intensified, but despite Z's enhanced abilities, Morgana's superior skills and experience gradually overwhelmed her. Within minutes, Z found herself forcibly demorphed and lying on the forest floor.

"Power Rangers? That is a joke," Morgana sneered. "I'm bored of playing with you now, but soon the winner will take all."

Meanwhile, downtown, the other Rangers were faring no better against Shorty. His incredible strength and durability proved too much for their individual attacks, and one by one, they were knocked out of their morphed forms.

"No one can stop me!" Shorty declared triumphantly.

"We can! Come on then!" Jack replied defiantly, but even his determination couldn't overcome the monster's overwhelming power.

As Shorty laughed over the defeated Rangers, Z arrived from her own battle.

"Sorry I'm late. I met a new friend," she said grimly.

"So did we, but I don't think you're gonna like them," Bridge replied wearily.

"Bring forth the Robot of Destruction!" Shorty commanded, and a massive mechanical warrior materialized in the city center.

"Always wanted to drive one of these," Morgana said with obvious glee from inside the Robot of Destruction.

"Oh yeah!" Shorty cheered as Morgana's voice echoed from inside the robot.

"You're really in trouble now," Shorty taunted before departing, leaving the Rangers to face the giant robot alone.

"Why do I have this feeling it's gonna be a long day?" Sky muttered.

"Now it's gonna get really fun!" came Morgana's voice from the robot's speakers.

Escalation

"Sending Zords," Kat reported from the Command Center.

"Yes!" Morgana exclaimed as her robot planted a strange device in the center of the city—a device clearly designed to broadcast some kind of signal.

From atop a nearby building, Broodwing observed the chaos with satisfaction. "Morgana and Shorty are running free in the city. Looks like the end of the Rangers is near."

The Delta Squad Megazord formed and immediately engaged the Robot of Destruction, but the enemy machine proved remarkably resilient.

"That doesn't look good. We gotta do something," Z said from inside the Megazord.

"Let's take that thing down," she commanded, firing the Megazord's weapons, but Morgana easily deflected the attack.

"Nice try, Rangers," she taunted.

In the Command Center, Kat watched the battle with growing concern. "Can't you do something, sir?"

"They know what they're doing," Cruger replied, though his own worry was evident. "They're the best I've ever had."

"But will that be enough?" Kat asked.

Her question was answered when additional alarms began sounding. "Commander!" she called out urgently. "Three more energy signatures approaching—it's Thrax, Robo-Moltor, and Robo-Flurious!"

Naruto was already moving before she finished speaking. "I'll handle them," he said, grabbing the Sentinel Knight's sword form.

"Naruto, wait—" Kat started, but he was already headed for the hangar.

"SPD Emergency!" he called out, morphing as he raced toward his Delta Bike.

The Confrontation

Naruto arrived at the secondary battle site just as the three enhanced villains were setting up some kind of technological device. Thrax stood at the center, his scarred armor gleaming with malevolent energy, while his mechanical brothers flanked him.

"Well, well, cousin," Thrax called out as Naruto approached on his SPD Orange Delta Bike. "Come to play hero again?"

"I've come to stop you," Naruto replied, dismounting and drawing his Dragon Blaster. "Whatever you're planning ends here."

"Does it?" Robo-Moltor asked, his twin flaming swords materializing in his hands. "I think not."

Robo-Flurious raised his ice staff, frost crackling around the weapon. "Three against one, Orange Ranger. Even you aren't that good."

"Try me," Naruto replied, drawing the Sentinel Knight's sword form as well.

The battle erupted with devastating intensity. Naruto moved with enhanced speed and precision, the Sentinel Knight's blade singing as it clashed against Thrax's dark sword while his Dragon Blaster fired at the mechanical brothers. But facing three enhanced enemies simultaneously, even his considerable skills were pushed to their limits.

"You're strong, cousin," Thrax acknowledged as their weapons locked. "But not strong enough."

Moltor's flames and Flurious's ice attacks came from both sides, forcing Naruto to constantly adjust his stance and defense. His hybrid bloodlines gave him enhanced reflexes, but three coordinated attackers of this caliber were overwhelming even his abilities.

"By the power of the Sentinel Knight—EXCELSIOR!" Naruto called out, his morpher transforming as he merged with the ancient warrior's power.

The SPD Orange Sentinel Ranger emerged in a blaze of golden light, his enhanced form radiating power that made even the three villains step back momentarily.

"Not Again!" Robo-Flurious breathed.

Now the tide of battle shifted. Naruto's enhanced form allowed him to engage all three enemies effectively, his dual golden swords parrying their attacks while his enhanced Dragon Blaster found gaps in their defenses. Within minutes, both Robo-Moltor and Robo-Flurious lay on the ground, their mechanical components sparking and malfunctioning.

"MOLTOR! FLURIOUS!" Thrax called out, seemingly concerned for their welfare as he approached their fallen forms.

"Thrax... help us," Moltor gasped, his voice distorted by damaged systems.

"Please... we need... power," Flurious added weakly.

"I'm sorry," Thrax said quietly, then placed one hand on each brother's head. "But I need your power more than you do."

"No!" Naruto realized what was happening and started forward, but Thrax released an orange Krybot to block his path. As Naruto destroyed the mechanical soldier, dark energy began flowing from the fallen brothers into Thrax.

"What are you doing?!" Moltor screamed as he felt his essence being drained.

"Thrax, you bastard!" Flurious managed to curse before the absorption process overwhelmed him.

Suddenly, a brilliant light engulfed all three figures. When it faded, Thrax had been completely transformed.

The New Threat

The being that stood before Naruto was no longer simply Thrax. His demonic knight armor was now half-fire and half-ice—the left side glowing with molten cracks of lava-like magma, while the right side was covered in frozen obsidian plates etched with frost patterns. His shoulder pads bore the faces of Moltor and Flurious, forever bound to serve their betrayer.

A full battle helm with a blackened visor concealed his face, but a faint glow leaked through—one eye crimson red (Moltor's essence), the other icy blue (Flurious's essence). Spikes crowned the helmet, giving him a sinister warlord presence.

Mounted on each shoulder were massive elemental cannons that could shift mechanically into thrusters for flight. In his hands, he held dual swords with one covered in ice and the other wreathed in flame.

"Magnificent," the transformed being said, his voice now carrying the harmonic tones of all three original personalities. He was surrounded by an aura of dark purple mixed with dark red and sky blue energies.

Naruto responded by releasing his own aura—golden orange flames that danced with the power of his dragon and fox bloodlines.

"Thank you, cousin," the transformed Thrax said with dark satisfaction. "Had you not become the Psycho Gold Ranger, I never would have conceived this idea. From this day forward, I am Hellfrost Thrax—master of fire and ice, heir to the powers of destruction."

"You murdered your own allies," Naruto said with disgust.

"I absorbed willing sacrifices," Hellfrost Thrax corrected mockingly. "They live on... as part of me."

The battle that followed was a spectacular clash of elemental fury and ancient power. Both warriors faced each other with dual swords raised—Naruto's twin golden blades humming with Sentinel Knight energy, while Hellfrost Thrax's fire-and-ice weapons crackled with absorbed elemental power.

"Let's see whose dual blades are superior, cousin," Hellfrost Thrax taunted, launching forward with both swords spinning in deadly arcs.

Naruto parried with his own twin weapons, golden steel ringing against the opposing elements. Sparks flew as his left blade caught Thrax's ice sword while his right deflected the flaming weapon, the collision sending shockwaves through the battlefield.

"Naruto, his power exceeds our combined strength," the Sentinel Knight's voice resonated in his mind. "Call Commander Cruger—we need reinforcements." "No," Naruto growled through gritted teeth, parrying another strike. "I can handle this myself."

As they danced through their deadly duel, both warriors' shoulder-mounted weapons came into play. Hellfrost Thrax's elemental cannons fired simultaneously—the left cannon belching molten plasma while the right launched razor ice shards. But Naruto's dragon cannons responded with automated precision, their targeting systems calculating trajectories and firing concentrated energy beams that intercepted the incoming attacks mid-air.

"Impressive technology," Thrax admitted, his shoulder cannons shifting mechanically into jetpack mode as he took to the skies. "But can it track this?"

He dove from above, both swords aimed downward like falling meteors. Naruto crossed his golden blades above his head, catching the strike, but the force drove him to one knee. At the same moment, his dragon cannons swiveled upward, firing at point-blank range at Thrax's exposed torso.

Thrax twisted away, the energy beams searing past his armor as he spun his ice sword in a wide arc. The freezing blade caught Naruto across the shoulder, ice crystals spreading along his armor. But before Thrax could follow up with his fire sword, Naruto's left golden blade swept up, forcing his cousin to leap back.

"Your dual weapons fighting style is admirable," Naruto acknowledged, both his swords now blazing with increased power. "But you're fighting with stolen strength."

"And you're fighting with borrowed power!" Thrax countered, his shoulder cannons converting back to weapon mode. "Let's see who runs out first!"

The battle intensified as both warriors unleashed everything they had. Naruto's dragon cannons fired in rapid succession while his golden swords wove a defensive barrier of light. Thrax responded with alternating fire and ice blasts from his cannons while his dual swords created whirlwinds of opposing elements.

But gradually, the toll of fighting someone with the combined power of three ancient warriors began to show. Thrax's enhanced strength, backed by the absorbed essences of Moltor and Flurious, gave him an edge that even the Sentinel Knight's wisdom couldn't completely overcome.

A devastating combination attack—ice sword high, fire sword low, while both shoulder cannons fired simultaneously—broke through Naruto's defenses. The coordinated assault sent him crashing through a concrete wall, his golden armor cracking under the assault.

"This is the difference between us, cousin," Hellfrost Thrax said as he advanced, both shoulder cannons tracking Naruto's position while his dual swords blazed with elemental fury. "You limit yourself with concepts like honor and mercy. I embrace the power that comes from taking everything."

Naruto struggled to his feet, his enhanced form flickering as his energy reserves depleted. Both his dragon cannons were damaged from the assault, their targeting systems sparking. "Power built on betrayal... will always destroy itself."

"Will it?" Hellfrost Thrax asked, launching forward with both swords in a devastating cross-slash. "Or will it destroy everything else first?"

The final blow sent Naruto to the ground, his Sentinel Knight form failing as he reverted to his regular Orange Ranger suit, then demorphed entirely. He lay there, badly injured, his left arm and right leg clearly broken, his dual swords and shoulder cannons having vanished with his transformation.

"I could kill you now," Hellfrost Thrax said, standing over his fallen cousin. "As easily as Rita killed your parents. But where's the fun in that? I want you to find a way to defeat me, Naruto. I want you to pour your heart and soul into becoming stronger. And when you think you've found the answer..." His voice dropped to a whisper. "I'll destroy you anyway. Just like mother destroyed your parents."

With that chilling promise, Hellfrost Thrax took to the skies, his shoulder cannons converting to jetpack mode as he disappeared into the clouds.

Regrouping

Back at the main battle site, the other Rangers had been struggling against Morgana and Shorty's combined assault. Shadow Ranger had arrived to help, but even his considerable skills were being tested.

As Shorty prepared to activate his device, Shadow Ranger managed to kick the remote from his hands just in time.

"Commander!" Z called out gratefully.

"I've got this one," Cruger replied, engaging Shorty directly while the Rangers dealt with Morgana.

The battle was fierce but ultimately successful. Shadow Ranger's Shadow Saber eventually found its mark against Shorty, while the Rangers coordinated their attack against Morgana. But just as they prepared to contain both enemies, Morgana managed to grab the activation device.

"Wait, but yes!" she exclaimed, pressing the button.

"No, wait!" Jack called out, but it was too late.

The device launched... fireworks into the sky.

"It was just fireworks?" Z said in confusion.

"Judgment time, Delgado," Cruger commanded.

"Yes! Shorty! Morgana! You are charged with the attempted takeover and destruction of Earth. Judgment!"

"This is ridiculous," Morgana protested.

"Guilty!" Z declared.

"Canine Cannon!" the Rangers called out, forming their ultimate weapon.

But before they could fire, another figure leaped between them and their targets—a massive creature that absorbed their energy blast completely.

"Not this time," the newcomer declared.

"Who is that?" the Rangers asked in shock.

"A friend," Morgana replied with obvious relief.

"My big brother!" Shorty added proudly.

"Oh, come on," Z muttered.

"I am Devastation, the most wanted criminal in the galaxy," the massive being announced. "A sample of my power!"

His energy blast sent all the Rangers flying, their morphed forms flickering under the assault.

"You haven't a chance," Devastation continued as Shorty and Morgana regrouped beside him.

The combined assault from all three enemies overwhelmed even Shadow Ranger's considerable abilities. Within minutes, the entire Ranger team lay defeated on the battlefield.

"That is your lesson for today," Devastation declared. "Your homework: feel the emotion that rages within you. It is called fear."

"Big brother, aren't we gonna finish this?" Shorty asked eagerly.

"No. Let them marinate in fear," Devastation replied coldly.

"Marinate?" Bridge repeated weakly from where he lay.

"Let's go," Devastation commanded, and the three villains departed, leaving the Rangers in a crumpled heap.

Assessment and Desperation

Back at the Command Center, the mood was grim as the battered Rangers received medical attention. Naruto sat in a wheelchair, his broken arm and leg in advanced healing braces while medical nanobots worked to accelerate his recovery. His hybrid bloodlines helped the healing process, but it would still take time for complete recovery.

"I have sent an urgent message to Galaxy Command and am awaiting word," Cruger reported. "Until we hear back, let's find out who we're dealing with."

Kat brought up the enemy files on the main screen. "His name is Devastation," she said, showing the massive creature's profile. "He truly is the most wanted criminal in the galaxy."

"Who would name their kid that?" Z wondered aloud.

"Not really his brother Shorty is the second most wanted," Kat continued, then brought up a new image. "But this—Morgana—I can't find anything about her."

"I know her," Cruger said grimly. "She is evil, powerful, and has the imagination of a ten-year-old child."

"That's a scary mix," Syd observed.

"The Zords took a beating as well. It'll take some time to get them back online," Cruger added.

Before anyone could respond, a hologram of Supreme Commander Birdy appeared in the Command Center.

"Commander Cruger, Rangers, SPD Headquarters is aware of your plight," Birdy announced solemnly. "We regret that at this time it will take too long to get reinforcements to you, and I fear depleting our forces would fall into Gruumm's trap. You are on your own. Good luck."

"This is a good day," Bridge said sarcastically as the transmission ended.

Immediately, new alarms began sounding as Shorty appeared on screen, literally eating a building.

"Conquering makes me hungry," the monster declared between bites.

"Go, Rangers," Cruger commanded.

"Ready!" Jack replied.

"SPD Emergency!" they called out, morphing once again despite their injuries and exhaustion.

The Final Battle

The confrontation with the giant Shorty proved to be the Rangers' most desperate battle yet. Despite their best efforts, the monster's incredible size and strength overwhelmed their attacks.

"Freeze! SPD!" Z called out as they engaged.

"What?" Shorty replied mockingly.

"We're bringing you in!" Sky declared.

"Not you losers again," Shorty dismissed them.

The battle was brutal and one-sided. Shorty easily overpowered the Rangers, at one point throwing Sky into a nearby river. Though Sky managed to recover and land some hits with his Delta Enforcer, the monster's superior strength eventually told.

From nearby buildings, Devastation and Morgana watched the battle with satisfaction.

"Those pesky Rangers again," Devastation observed.

"Should be interesting," Morgana agreed.

"I agree. Target," Devastation replied ominously.

When Jack finally managed to hit Shorty with the Canine Cannon, they thought they had won—until Shorty absorbed the energy and grew to massive size.

"What's going on?" Kat asked from the Command Center.

"They won't call me Shorty anymore! He's huge!" the transformed monster declared.

"Oh man, we need the Runners, Kat!" Jack called desperately.

"Bad news—the Zords aren't coming," Kat replied.

"You're kidding! We're in big trouble here!" Jack protested.

"No time for jokes, Kat, we need the Megazord!" Sky added.

"I wish I were kidding. The repairs aren't finished yet," Kat confirmed.

"Now what do we do?" Bridge asked as Shorty continued his rampage, destroying empty buildings with obvious pleasure.

"I hate empty buildings," the giant monster declared.

"We're not down yet," Jack said with forced confidence.

"I never thought it would be so easy," Morgana observed from her vantage point.

"With the Rangers out of the way, we will rule alongside Gruumm," Devastation agreed.

Suddenly, Shorty fired his laser vision at the Rangers, sending them all crashing to the ground in a heap.

"Maybe the message was right," Jack said weakly, his confidence finally breaking. "This is the end."

The Villains' Triumph

Aboard Gruumm's command ship, the emperor watched the battle's conclusion with dark satisfaction.

"We have SPD right where we want them," he declared.

"I'm glad you are pleased, Emperor," Morgana replied through the communication system. "The battle will be over soon."

"Then finally, Earth will be mine," Gruumm said with anticipation.

As the Rangers lay defeated on the ground, their Zords offline and their strongest member in a wheelchair with multiple broken bones, it seemed as though the future broadcast's dire warning was coming true. SPD was indeed falling on July 11th, 2025—just fifteen years earlier than predicted.

The white ball of light that had entered the Command Center earlier pulsed once, as if responding to the Rangers' desperate situation, but remained hidden in the shadows. Whatever protective force it represented was not yet ready to reveal itself.

For now, the forces of evil had won, and Earth's defenders had never been more vulnerable. The darkest hour had arrived, and dawn seemed impossibly far away.
