Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Death by Instant Ramen

(REVISED)

Leo Martinez died on a Tuesday.

Which was honestly pretty typical for his luck. Tuesdays were the worst days of the week - not the fresh start of Monday, not the midweek hope of Wednesday, just... Tuesday. Gray, boring, pointless Tuesday.

He'd been reading "Chronicles of the Ethereal Sovereign" on his phone while eating instant ramen for dinner. Again. The novel was trash, but it was *addictive* trash. Generic reincarnation story about some overpowered guy collecting a harem while becoming the strongest being in existence. The kind of wish-fulfillment fantasy that made Leo's mundane office job feel even more depressing.

The protagonist had just awakened his "Divine Dragon Bloodline" or whatever when Leo took a particularly large bite of noodles and... well, that was it.

Choking on cheap ramen while reading garbage web novels. If that wasn't the most pathetic way to die, Leo couldn't think of what would be worse.

The funny thing was, his last thought wasn't about his family or regrets or unfinished dreams. It was: *"I bet the MC is gonna get another hot girl next chapter."*

Then everything went black.

**CONSCIOUSNESS.**

Weird. That was Leo's first thought as awareness slowly returned. Not light, not pain, not confusion - just... weird. Like wearing clothes that almost fit but not quite. Like hearing your voice on a recording and not recognizing it.

His memories were... doubled. Layered.

Leo Martinez, 26, office worker from Chicago. Loved junk food, hated his job, died reading web novels.

Raelian Voros, 16, noble's son from the Astral Kingdom. Loved... studying? Maybe? Had just awakened his magic three days ago and passed out from the strain.

Both sets of memories felt equally real. Equally *his*. It wasn't like Leo had taken over Raelian's body - it was more like they'd somehow become the same person. The memories weren't fighting each other; they were just... there. Coexisting.

*Fusion,* Leo-Raelian thought. *Not possession. We're the same person now, somehow.*

It was unsettling as hell.

"Young Master Raelian? Are you awake?"

A middle-aged woman in what looked like a maid's uniform was leaning over him. Martha - Raelian's memories supplied her name along with a wave of genuine affection. She'd basically raised him after his mother died when he was eight.

"I..." He tried to speak and had to adjust to the different vocal cords. "Yeah, I'm awake. How long was I out?"

"Three days, Young Master. The healers said magical awakening can be overwhelming, especially for someone with your... particular circumstances."

Particular circumstances? That was new. The original Raelian's memories were fuzzy around the awakening ceremony. Something about it being different than expected, more intense than normal.

"What kind of particular circumstances?"

Martha looked uncomfortable. "Perhaps you should speak with your father when he returns from the capital. I'm not qualified to explain magical theory."

Great. Mysterious magical circumstances. In Leo's experience with fantasy novels, mysterious circumstances were usually the kind that got you killed.

"When does father get back?"

"Tomorrow, just in time to see you off to the Academy."

The Academy. Valerion Imperial Academy, where noble children learned magic and politics and how to be proper members of the upper class. And where - according to the novel Leo had been reading - Raelian Voros would get caught up in political intrigue and executed for treason by chapter 30.

Leo's memories provided one set of concerns: excitement about finally attending the prestigious Academy, nervousness about living up to family expectations, hope for making friends and learning proper magic.

Raelian's memories provided another: absolute terror about getting murdered by the plot.

The combination was giving him a headache.

"Martha," he said carefully, "what exactly happened during my awakening ceremony?"

She wrung her hands nervously. "I really think you should wait for Lord Voros to explain..."

"Please. I need to understand what's happening to me."

Martha sighed. "Your magical signature was... unusual. Stronger than expected, but also strange. The testing crystal showed patterns the Academy examiner had never seen before. He said you might have some kind of rare bloodline awakening, but he couldn't identify what type."

Rare bloodline awakening. In fantasy novels, that was either a death sentence or the beginning of becoming stupidly overpowered. Given that Raelian was supposed to die in two months, Leo was betting on death sentence.

"Did he say anything else?"

"Just that the Academy would want to study your magical development very carefully. He seemed... excited about the possibilities."

*Being studied by Academy officials.* That definitely sounded like the kind of attention that would get a background character killed.

"Right," Leo-Raelian said, trying to process this new information. "Well, I guess we'll figure it out at the Academy."

The rest of the day was spent learning to navigate his new dual existence. Raelian's muscle memory helped with basic tasks - walking, eating with proper etiquette, interacting with servants without being awkward. Leo's adult mindset helped with understanding the broader implications of what was happening.

He was definitely in the world of "Chronicles of the Ethereal Sovereign." The political structure, the magic system, the geographical details - everything matched what Leo remembered from the novel. Which meant he knew what was coming: wars, conspiracies, cosmic threats, and a main character who would gather power and women in equal measure while saving the world.

The problem was, he wasn't the main character. He was Raelian Voros, a side character who would die early and dramatically to advance someone else's plot.

Unless...

Leo looked at his reflection in an ornate mirror, seeing Raelian's face looking back. Younger features, different eye color, the kind of generically handsome appearance that screamed "disposable noble number three."

But behind those eyes was an adult mind with knowledge of future events and, apparently, some kind of rare magical bloodline that had never appeared in the original novel.

"Maybe," he said quietly, "the story's already changing."

The question was whether that would save his life or just get him killed in a different, more creative way.

Tomorrow he'd leave for the Academy and find out.
