Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: The Best Laid Plans and Other Disasters

Leo-Raelian had been staring at the same page of Advanced Magical Theory for the past twenty minutes without reading a single word. The dormitory room was quiet except for the sound of Garrett occasionally turning pages in his own textbook and muttering mathematical complaints under his breath.

"I can't concentrate either," Garrett said finally, closing his book with more force than necessary. "Every time I try to focus on theoretical applications, I keep thinking about professional infiltrators and extraction operations and whether David Chen is going to get kidnapped tonight."

"Academy security knows what they're doing," Leo-Raelian replied, though he wasn't entirely convinced himself. "Professor Blackthorne said they have everything under control."

"Right. Which is why you've been staring at the same page for the last half hour."

Leo-Raelian glanced down at his textbook and realized Garrett was absolutely right. The section on energy circulation optimization might as well have been written in ancient Draconic for all the attention he'd been paying to it.

"Okay, fine. I'm worried too. But what are we supposed to do about it? Professor Blackthorne specifically told us to stay in our dormitories and let professionals handle the situation."

"We could always accidentally take a walk around the Academy grounds," Garrett suggested. "You know, for fresh air and definitely not to investigate anything suspicious."

"That's a terrible idea."

"I know. But it's also the kind of terrible idea that we're probably going to end up doing anyway, so we might as well plan for it properly."

Before Leo-Raelian could respond to Garrett's disturbingly accurate prediction, someone knocked on their door with the kind of urgent rhythm that suggested trouble.

"It's Helena," came the whispered voice from the hallway. "Open up. Quickly."

Leo-Raelian opened the door to find Helena, Marcus, and Elena clustered outside, all looking tense and carrying what appeared to be Academy messenger bags.

"We need to talk," Helena said, slipping into the room with her characteristic efficient movement. "Something's gone wrong with the Academy security operation."

"Wrong how?" Garrett asked, immediately abandoning any pretense of studying.

"The infiltrators changed their timeline," Marcus explained as the others settled into the limited seating space. "Instead of waiting until tonight, they moved the extraction attempt to this evening. Right now, actually."

"How do you know that?" Leo-Raelian asked.

"Elena has been monitoring magical energy fluctuations around the Academy using some of her research equipment," Helena replied. "She detected the same kind of concealment magic we encountered last night, but in a completely different location."

Elena nodded grimly. "The energy signatures are moving toward the southern Academy boundaries, near the auxiliary library buildings. That's nowhere near where Academy security set up their counter-operation."

"So Academy security is watching the wrong area while the actual kidnapping happens somewhere else," Leo-Raelian concluded.

"Exactly. And by the time we could find Professor Blackthorne or Dean Alderton to report this, the extraction could be complete."

Garrett raised his hand like he was in class. "Quick question - why is this our problem? Shouldn't we just... I don't know, set off some kind of alarm or something?"

"Academy alarms would alert the infiltrators that their operation had been discovered," Helena explained patiently. "They'd either abort and try again later, or accelerate the extraction and potentially harm their target."

"Plus," Elena added, "we don't know for certain that Academy security isn't already aware of the change. Our information could be wrong or incomplete."

"But we also can't ignore the possibility that David Chen or one of the other potential targets is in immediate danger," Marcus concluded.

Leo-Raelian considered their options, none of which seemed particularly appealing. Stay in the dormitory and potentially let a kidnapping succeed, or violate direct orders from Academy security to investigate a situation they were completely unprepared to handle.

"What's your plan?" he asked Helena, recognizing the signs that she'd already thought through various scenarios.

"Reconnaissance only," she replied immediately. "We investigate the energy signatures Elena detected, confirm whether an actual extraction is in progress, and then alert Academy security with specific location information they can act on immediately."

"And if the situation is too dangerous for reconnaissance?" Leo-Raelian pressed.

"Then we retreat and alert Academy security anyway. Better to risk being wrong than to let someone get kidnapped because we were too cautious to investigate."

Elena held up her detection equipment - a complex arrangement of crystals and metal wires that looked like it belonged in an advanced magical research laboratory. "I can track the energy signatures remotely, so we won't have to get too close to determine what's happening."

"How remote is 'remotely'?" Garrett asked suspiciously.

"Maybe fifty yards," Elena admitted. "The concealment magic interferes with longer-range detection."

"Fifty yards," Garrett repeated. "From professional infiltrators. Who nearly killed us last night."

"It's better than zero yards," Marcus pointed out optimistically.

"That's a very low bar for 'better,'" Garrett muttered, but he was already gathering his things. "Fine. But I'm officially protesting this plan on the grounds that it's probably going to get us all killed."

"Noted," Helena said with a slight smile. "Your objection will be included in our mission report. Assuming we survive to write one."

"That's not as reassuring as you think it is."

They gathered their equipment - Elena's detection crystals, basic magical supplies, and the emergency communication devices Helena had somehow acquired from Academy security stores - and prepared to sneak out of the dormitories for the second time in two days.

*This is definitely becoming a pattern,* Leo-Raelian thought. *And probably not a healthy one.*

The Academy grounds after dark were significantly more intimidating when they knew hostile forces were actively operating in the area. Every shadow could conceal an enemy, every sound might indicate approaching danger, and Elena's detection equipment kept producing soft chimes that meant absolutely nothing to anyone except Elena.

"The energy signatures are stronger this way," Elena whispered, adjusting her equipment and pointing toward a cluster of auxiliary buildings near the Academy's southern boundary. "Whatever magical concealment they're using, it's much more sophisticated than last night."

"Is that good or bad?" Marcus asked.

"Bad," Helena and Leo-Raelian replied simultaneously.

They made their way carefully toward the auxiliary buildings, using the stealth techniques Sergeant Torres had drilled into them during that afternoon's training session. Leo-Raelian was privately amazed at how much more confident he felt moving quietly through potentially dangerous terrain after just a few hours of professional instruction.

*Training really does make a difference. Even basic training is better than just winging it.*

The auxiliary library building came into view through the trees - a smaller, older structure that housed specialized magical texts and research materials. It looked completely normal except for the fact that Elena's detection equipment was practically humming with activity.

"Definitely something happening in there," Elena confirmed quietly. "Multiple magical signatures, advanced concealment spells, and what looks like... transportation magic?"

"Transportation magic?" Helena asked sharply.

"Like teleportation or portal creation. Something designed to move people or objects across significant distances."

*That's how they planned to get their target out of Academy territory quickly. Teleportation beyond the Academy's protective wards.*

Leo-Raelian motioned for the group to take cover behind a cluster of ornamental shrubs while they observed the building. For several minutes, nothing seemed to be happening. Then the building's main door opened and figures in dark robes began emerging.

"That's them," Marcus whispered. "Same robes as last night."

The infiltrators were moving with professional efficiency, carrying what appeared to be a bundled figure between them. Their target was unconscious or restrained, and definitely not cooperating with the extraction.

"Is that David?" Garrett asked, squinting through the darkness.

Helena had produced a small pair of enchanted magnification lenses from her seemingly endless collection of useful equipment. "I can't tell for certain, but the size and build could match David Chen."

"Or Sarah Montrose or Thomas Brightwater," Elena pointed out. "All three potential targets are similar builds."

The infiltrators had stopped near what appeared to be a magical circle carved into the ground - probably a prepared teleportation point. One of them began activating the transportation magic while the others maintained security positions.

"We need to do something," Leo-Raelian said quietly. "Once that teleportation activates, whoever they grabbed is gone."

"What exactly are you suggesting?" Helena asked. "We're fifty yards away from professional combatants with advanced magical training, and we have maybe two minutes before they complete their extraction."

"Disruption," Elena said suddenly. "We don't have to defeat them - we just have to interfere with the teleportation magic long enough for Academy security to respond."

"How do we disrupt teleportation magic?" Marcus asked.

"Magical interference," Elena replied, holding up her detection equipment. "If I overload the crystals and create a localized magical disturbance, it should destabilize any complex spellwork in the immediate area."

"Will that work?" Leo-Raelian asked.

"Probably," Elena said with the kind of confidence that suggested she was mostly guessing. "Worst case scenario, it doesn't work and we retreat while they're distracted by the explosion."

"Explosion?" Garrett's voice cracked slightly.

"Small explosion," Elena clarified. "Mostly harmless."

"'Mostly harmless' is not the same as 'harmless,'" Garrett pointed out.

"Do you have a better idea?" Helena asked.

Garrett considered this for a moment. "No, but I want it on record that I think this plan has significant room for improvement."

"Noted," Helena replied. "Elena, how long do you need to prepare the overload?"

"Two minutes to reconfigure the crystals, maybe thirty seconds to build up to critical discharge."

"And how close do you need to be?"

"Twenty yards. Maybe twenty-five if we're lucky."

Helena looked around at their group - five first-year students with minimal combat training, basic magical skills, and a plan that relied heavily on improvised magical engineering.

"Well," she said finally, "it's not the worst plan we've ever had."

"When did we have a worse plan?" Marcus asked.

"I'm trying to be optimistic."

Elena was already reconfiguring her detection equipment, adjusting crystal alignments and magical flow patterns with the kind of focused intensity that suggested she really knew what she was doing.

*Or she's very good at looking confident while making things up. Either way, it's more of a plan than we had five minutes ago.*

"Once Elena triggers the magical disruption," Helena continued, "we need to be prepared for the infiltrators to respond aggressively. They're not going to be happy about their extraction being interrupted."

"What's our backup plan if they decide to attack us instead of retreating?" Leo-Raelian asked.

"Run very fast in different directions and hope Academy security arrives quickly," Helena replied matter-of-factly.

"That's not really a backup plan," Garrett observed.

"It's the best we've got under the circumstances."

Elena finished her adjustments and looked up from her modified equipment. "Ready. This is either going to work brilliantly or create a very colorful way for us to get killed."

"Inspirational," Marcus muttered.

They began moving closer to the infiltrators' position, using every stealth technique they could remember and probably several they were improvising on the spot. The bundled figure on the ground remained motionless, and the infiltrators were focused on their teleportation preparations.

*Twenty yards. Almost close enough for Elena's disruption attempt.*

The lead infiltrator raised his hands and began the final phase of the teleportation spell. Complex magical patterns appeared in the air around the prepared circle, and reality seemed to shimmer as the transportation magic built toward activation.

"Now or never," Elena whispered, triggering her overloaded detection equipment.

The magical disruption was definitely not a small explosion.

The entire area lit up like someone had set off a magical flashbang grenade, complete with overwhelming light, deafening noise, and a pressure wave that knocked everyone within thirty yards flat on their backs. The infiltrators' carefully prepared teleportation spell collapsed spectacularly, sending magical feedback through their casting circle and apparently causing several of them significant discomfort.

"That worked better than expected," Elena said weakly from where she'd landed in a decorative bush.

"It also probably alerted everyone within a mile radius that something interesting was happening," Helena pointed out, extracting herself from her own involuntary landing spot.

The infiltrators had recovered from their surprise and were now very unhappy about their ruined extraction operation. They were also looking around for whoever had interfered with their plans, and it probably wouldn't take them long to spot five students trying to untangle themselves from landscaping.

"Time to go," Leo-Raelian announced, helping Garrett to his feet.

"What about their target?" Marcus asked, pointing toward the still-unconscious figure.

"Academy security should be here within minutes," Helena replied. "Our job was disruption and intelligence gathering. Mission accomplished."

As if summoned by her words, magical flares began lighting up the sky around the Academy grounds - Academy security's response to Elena's very obvious magical disruption.

The infiltrators took one look at the approaching security forces, cursed creatively in several languages, and began their own retreat toward the Academy boundaries. Without their target, who they apparently decided wasn't worth fighting Academy security to retrieve.

"Well," Garrett said as Academy security personnel began arriving from multiple directions, "that was thoroughly terrifying, but it seems to have worked."

Professor Blackthorne appeared among the first wave of responders, took one look at their group, and sighed with the expression of someone whose evening had become significantly more complicated than planned.

"I specifically told you to stay in your dormitories," she said.

"Yes ma'am," Helena replied. "But the infiltrators moved their timeline up, and we detected their operation in progress at a location away from your prepared response."

"So you decided to handle it yourselves rather than alerting Academy security through proper channels."

"We did alert Academy security," Elena pointed out. "Just... loudly. And with magical explosions."

Professor Blackthorne looked around at the disrupted teleportation circle, the unconscious kidnapping target, and the five students who were clearly responsible for preventing a successful extraction operation.

"We're going to have a very long conversation about proper security protocols," she said finally. "But first, let's make sure everyone is safe and the target is unharmed."

The unconscious figure turned out to be David Chen, confirming their suspicions about the infiltrators' target selection. He was unharmed but heavily drugged with some kind of magical sedative that would take several hours to wear off completely.

As Academy security secured the area and began investigating the infiltrators' abandoned equipment, Leo-Raelian reflected on their second successful interference with professional criminal operations in as many days.

*This is definitely becoming a pattern. And while tonight worked out, we can't keep getting lucky with improvised plans and creative use of magical research equipment.*

"You know," he said to Helena as they waited for their inevitable debriefing with Academy officials, "we're going to need much better training if we keep ending up in situations like this."

"Good thing we just started the Junior Security Assistant program," she replied with a slight smile. "Though I suspect Sergeant Torres is going to have some very pointed comments about proper mission planning tomorrow."

"Tomorrow's going to be educational," Marcus agreed.

"At least we're consistent," Garrett added. "Consistently terrifying, but consistent."

Elena was examining the remains of her overloaded detection equipment with the expression of someone making mental notes for future improvements. "Next time, I'm building in variable output controls. This thing had way more explosive potential than I calculated."

"Next time?" Garrett asked weakly.

"Oh, there's definitely going to be a next time," Helena said with certainty. "This is just the beginning."

As Academy security led them away for debriefing, Leo-Raelian couldn't help but agree with Helena's assessment. They'd successfully prevented two extraction operations in two days, but they'd also clearly attracted the attention of people who weren't going to give up after a couple of failed attempts.

*Things are definitely about to get more complicated.*

But at least they were getting better at handling complicated situations. Even if their methods occasionally involved improvised magical explosions and creative interpretations of direct orders from Academy security.

*Growth through effort,* he thought with dark amusement. *And apparently through developing a talent for controlled chaos.*

It was probably going to be a useful skill set.
