I hadn't slept all night. Not a wink.
The hours bled into each other, restless and heavy, until the morning light crept in through the narrow window and mocked me for still being awake.
Two cups of bitter coffee later, I still felt like death warmed over. The caffeine wasn't helping, just making my heart race faster, beating guilt through my veins instead of blood.
I'd fought with Joe.
I'd kissed Devante.
And my wolf hadn't spoken to me since.
It wasn't just quiet and I really feared its absence. The part of me that used to hum beneath my skin, that warm tether that made me feel alive, was gone.
Ever since Devante kissed me yesterday evening, she'd retreated deep inside, just whining sadly, but after the fight with Joe, she retreated deeper, refusing to whisper, growl, or even breathe. And without her, I felt hollow, like a body with no pulse, and no soul.
