I ran.
The battlefield was chaos around me, soldiers screaming, steel clashing, but none of it mattered. All I could hear was the echo of Cassius's last breath, all I could feel was the sudden emptiness where his presence used to be.
I reached them and fell to my knees beside Aldrik, who still held Cassius's body like he could somehow keep him from slipping away entirely.
"No," I whispered, my hands reaching for my brother's face, his skin was already cooling, his eyes staring at nothing. "No, no, no, Cassius, please—"
But he was gone.
The reality of it hit me like a cold stone, my brother, my perfect, kind, beautiful brother who'd always protected me, who'd tried so hard to keep me safe even when his own life was falling apart.
Gone.
