Brennan was doing it wrong again.
Not badly wrong, not the kind of wrong that would hurt him or anyone else, just the particular wrong of someone who had learned the shape of a thing without understanding what was underneath it. He was channeling his holy power the way he'd been shown rather than the way it actually wanted to move, and the difference was subtle enough that most people wouldn't catch it.
I caught it.
"Stop," I said, not unkindly. "Feel where it wants to go before you push it anywhere."
Brennan's face did the thing young trainees' faces did when they were trying very hard not to look frustrated. I had learned not to smile at that particular expression, it never helped.
"It doesn't feel like it wants to go anywhere," he said.
"That's because you're already moving it. You're asking and answering at the same time." I held out my hand and let a thread of power move through my palm, slow enough to watch. "Wait for the answer before you give one."
