Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Pure Nutrients Are a Great Harm

"Spleen Earth, why have you been working so hard lately? There's way too much essence and blood being produced, it's forcing us to absorb even if we don't want to."

"What can I do? When stuff comes in, I just process it. Though, recently, some things seem to come in completely without needing my processing, it's a bit strange."

"Are you talking about that little thief?"

"What little thief?"

"Just a very, very small thief. Once it got in, it started prying at my bone marrow, it's terrible. The most frustrating part is that I have no way to deal with this little thief."

"Who's so vile? Heart Fire, do you know what that little thief is?"

"I'm not too sure, I only know it's called calcium tablets."

Calcium tablets!?

Upon hearing this, Lu Jiu couldn't help but frown.

"Who's speaking?"

As soon as the thought arose, Lu Jiu was noticed by Xia Xing's Five Viscera.

Seeing this, Lu Jiu began to attempt communication with Xia Xing's Five Viscera.

"Was it Hydronephrosis talking about a thief just now?" Lu Jiu asked.

"Yes, yes, who are you?" Hydronephrosis asked.

"I'm a doctor," Lu Jiu replied.

"Doctor? What's that?" Hydronephrosis was a bit puzzled, "Heart Fire, do you know?"

"No idea," Heart Fire said.

"..." Lu Jiu was momentarily speechless.

It seems everyone's Five Viscera understanding of the outside world should grow with age.

"It's okay if you don't know. If you feel uncomfortable anywhere, you can tell me, and I will help you resolve it," Lu Jiu said.

As his words fell, a weak voice arose.

"I'm uncomfortable."

"You're... Hydronephrosis?"

Lu Jiu felt this voice was much like the one that spoke of a thief earlier.

"Yes, yes, can you help me chase away that thief?" Hydronephrosis murmured like an extremely timid child.

This...

Lu Jiu knew that Hydronephrosis was referring to calcium tablets.

This stuff indeed provides no help to the body, and taking too much can actually harm it.

From the perspective of Chinese medicine, all pure nutrients are more harmful than beneficial.

Because when the body ingests nutrients, it must go through the screening of the Five Viscera and Six Bowels, in other words, the Five Viscera and Six Bowels must have the autonomous right to choose and accept certain nutrients.

For example, sour flavor should enter the liver, sweet flavor should enter the spleen. If sour enters the spleen, then no matter how nutritious it is, it won't provide a nourishing effect after entering the body.

Indeed, the body needs calcium, but not calcium tablets. Taking such pure nutrients into the body is akin to telling the bones, I'm now supplementing you with calcium; you have to accept it even if you don't want to. So, when calcium tablets enter the body, they displace the natural calcium in bones, occupying the nest of someone else. It not only fails to supplement the bones but harms them instead.

In fact, when Lu Jiu was in school, some Western medicine teachers talked about how modern research has already shown most supplements have no effect at all.

For this reason, some top domestic scholars compiled the Huaxia Resident Dietary Guidelines, clearly stating not to recommend nutritional supplements.

In recent years, several leaders in the medical field have published papers, stating that in the long run, trace elements and vitamin supplements do nothing to reduce cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, or mortality rates, advising people to get their nutrients from food as much as possible.

So, it's not just Chinese medicine opposing pure nutrition; Western medicine has also found in recent years that pure nutrients are not good for the body.

However, this knowledge has not been widely disseminated to the general public, and even many doctors are advising patients to take various vitamin tablets.

This is actually incorrect!

"I'll try," Lu Jiu agreed while also thinking about how to convince Xia Jun and others not to give the child calcium tablets anymore.

"I feel uncomfortable too," Heart Fire said.

"Go ahead," Lu Jiu said.

"I just feel inexplicably angry, unable to vent," Heart Fire said.

Angry?

Heart Fire excessive?

Lu Jiu couldn't help but frown.

During the pulse-taking process, he also noticed moisture in Xia Xing's body, and it was in the Spleen and Stomach.

"Spleen Earth, do you process an unusually large amount of food usually?" Lu Jiu asked.

"Yes," Spleen Earth replied.

"Can you manage it?" Lu Jiu asked.

"Definitely not, but what else can be done? I can't just not process it," Spleen Earth said.

No wonder there is moisture in the Spleen and Stomach.

Clearly, there's been too much supplementation.

Generally speaking, when Spleen function is normal, food once processed turns into the essence of grain and water for the Five Viscera and Six Bowels. But if a problem occurs, some food can't be properly processed, then it turns into dampness, lingering in the body.

If this dampness isn't removed, the body's Five Viscera circulation will have issues.

The Inner Canon of the Yellow Emperor mentions, the Liver leads drainage, the Heart governs blood vessels, the Spleen governs transformation, the Lung leads purification and descent, and the Kidney governs storing.

This means when food enters the stomach through the mouth, the Spleen starts transforming it. Once the food is transformed into the essence of grain and water, it is gasified by the small intestine to form clear and turbid energies.

At this time, the Liver, in conjunction with the Spleen, sends nutrient-rich clear energy with a little Hydronephrosis to the Heart and Lung. Now, the water in the clear energy blends with fire, providing nourishment to the Heart and preventing excessive Heart Fire.

Then, this clear energy, carrying some Heart Fire, descends and enters Hydronephrosis with the help of Fei Jin. Here, fire combines with water once more, transforming into Life Essence stored in Hydronephrosis, this Life Essence acquired from food is our postnatal foundation.

All our emotional activities rely on this Life Essence. Once the postnatal foundation is shaken, it inevitably consumes the inborn foundation stored in Hydronephrosis, and reaching that point is akin to overdrawing life.
