The halftime buzzer echoed through the now-emptying arena, signaling a ten-minutes break for the teams. As they retreated to their locker rooms, the spectators couldn't help but discuss the unexpected turn of events. The match had been entirely one-sided, with the Queens dominating the court due Victoria's disinterest
"This game is over. I'm going home," Spectator 1 declared
"Yeah, me too," Spectator 2 said, sharing the same sentiment
"I came here to witness Tosin go head-to-head against a member of the Victorious Varsity but Victoria doesn't even seem interested in this game. What a waste of time" Spectator 3 lamented, expressing the frustration felt by many who had anticipated a thrilling showdown
"What were you expected? Her school has qualified for the Christmas Champions Cup. She has nothing left to play for," Spectator 4 pointed out, acknowledging Victoria's lack of motivation
"With a 45-point difference, at this stage, it's pretty obvious that the Queens have this one in the bag already," Spectator 5 said, accepting the inevitable outcome
The once-packed arena began to empty as the spectators made their way towards the exits, disillusioned by the unbalanced game. With a mere five minutes, a significant portion of the seats had been vacated, leaving the remaining few to bear witness to the conclusion of the game
Inside the Queens' locker room, the atmosphere was filled with a mix of awe and concern
Mercy, still in disbelief over Tosin's impressive shot, exclaimed, "Tosin, how did you do that? It was insane!"
"Yeah, I'm with Mercy on this one," Shalom agreed, nodding her head in amazement
Oluchi chimed in, "When you threw the ball, I thought it would bounce off the rim, but it went in instead. I was completely wowed!"
Tosin slightly embarrassed by the attention, tried to downplay her accomplishment. "Well, I was really frustrated at the time so I angrily threw the ball at the hoop. To be honest, I wasn't expecting it to go in, so I guess I was just lucky"
Mrs. Lawal, having observed Tosin's interaction with Victoria after the shot, decided to address the matter. "Tosin, what happened between you and Victoria? I saw you two talking"
Tosin took a deep breath before revealing her challenge to Victoria. "Well, the real game begins in the second half. Victoria said she'd start playing seriously"
The entire team reacted with a collective gasp, shock and fear evident in their faces.
"Are you sure about that?" Mrs. Lawal asked, concern etched on her brow
Tosin nodded confidently, "Yes, Coach"
Mrs. Lawal's expression grew serious as she contemplated the implications of Victoria's warning. "Well, in that case, our 45-point lead means nothing"
Tosin, confused by her coach's statement, asked. "What do you mean, Coach?"
"Now that I think about it, Tosin, you missed our previous two games against Rose Newton High School. Victoria is on another level. Her defense is insane. Guys, at this point, I won't say you should score more than them. Just focus on preventing them from closing the gap," Mrs. Lawal instructed, her voice firm and resolute
The Queens responded in unison, "Yes, ma'am!"
Still confused, Tosin questioned her teammates, "What do you guys mean? How good is her defense?"
Mercy, her voice heavy with the weight of experience, replied, "You'll find out on the court in the second half"
In the Rose Newton High School Basketball Team locker room, the atmosphere was surprisingly casual, as the team appeared unconcerned about the current state of the game. The mood, however shifted abruptly when Victoria made an unexpected declaration
"We are going to win this game. I want everyone to be serious from here on out," Victoria announced, catching her teammates and coach off guard
Coach Bankole, puzzled by Victoria's change of heart, inquired, "Huh? Why the sudden shift in attitude?"
Victoria revealed her motivation, "Their ace, Tosin, insulted the Victorious Varsity; she needs to be taught a lesson. That's all"
Fisayo, considering the potential implication of a win, asked, "If we win here, our first opponents will be relatively easy. Are you okay with that?"
Unfazed, Victoria responded, "It's okay. We can face the strong teams later in the tournament. Right now, I just want to crush Tosin"
Sensing the depth of Victoria's determination, Coach Bankole, observed, "It seems you've made quite a rival for yourself, Victoria"
Annoyed by the comparison, Victoria retorted, "That idiot is not my rival"
Coach Bankole, knowing Victoria's competitive nature, pointed out, "But, you are not the type to fall for taunts unless they come from people you acknowledge. Seeing you falling for Tosin's taunt, doesn't that mean you've acknowledged Tosin as a worthy opponent"
Victoria, unable to deny the truth in her coach's words revealed her underlying concern, "Well, that shot she made is almost similar to the shot Cynthia is known for,"
Coach Bankole's eyes widened in shock, "Cynthia? You mean Cynthia James? A member of the Victorious Varsity like yourself? The girl who broke through your defense last year?"
"Exactly" Victoria confirmed. "But that doesn't mean Tosin is on the level of the Victorious Varsity. It was a fluke that she made the shot. I just want to crush her. That's all"
Understanding Victoria's motivation, Coach Bankole relented, "Alright then. Let's show them what we're made of in the second half."
The Rose Newton High School Basketball Team, now galvanized by Victoria's determination, prepared to return to the court and determined to stage the greatest comeback in the history of the game. Humanly speaking, the game is over, however the probability of defeat is zero; that is when all members of the team have given up. However, the Rose Newton High School believe that victory is in fact very possible from here. Most people would conclude that they are drunk or they are not thinking right but this is basketball where comebacks are very possible.
The energy of the court shifted as both teams returned for the second half. The Queens, sporting their white and pink striped kits, couldn't help but notice a change in their opponents' demeanor. The Rose Newton High School Basketball Team, donning their blue and black striped kits, now exuded a palpable sense of determination
"It seems it wasn't a lie. They look bloodthirsty now," Oluchi observed, casting a wary glance at the newly invigorated Rose Newton High School Basketball Team players
"Yeah," Mercy agreed, feeling the tension rising
Tosin and Victoria exchanged heated glares, their competitive spirits fueling the intensity between them
As the players took their positions on the court, the sparse crowd fell silent, uneager to continue watching as they were sure the game was pretty much over
The third quarter began with the Queens in possession of the ball. Oluchi confidently led the attack, only to be halted by Fisayo, whose determination was evident in her aggressive play.
Surprised by Fisayo's sudden vigor, Oluchi questioned, "Yo, what changed?"
Fisayo, focused and unyielding, began to explain, "Well, our ace said we must win this game at…."
Before Fisayo could finish her sentence, Oluchi unleashed a three-pointer, attempting to capitalize on the momentary distraction
Irritated by Oluchi's impulsive move, Fisayo scolded, "Hey, listen when others are talking!"
The ball soared through the air, only to be met by Victoria's formidable block, leaving Oluchi frustrated and questioning Victoria's height advantage
"So tall?" Oluchi muttered under her breath
"Alright, let's go!" Victoria commanded, charging towards the opposite end of the court.
The Queens struggled to keep up with Victoria's breakneck pace, not even Tosin could close the distance
Victoria leaped into the air and yelled, "Incredible Hulk Dunk!" as she slammed the ball into the hoop with impressive force.
As the game resumed, the Queens found themselves in possession of the ball once again. The players swiftly exchanged passes, executing series of quick, diagonal movements in an attempt to outmaneuver their opponents. The ball travelled fluidly between teammates, ultimately finding its way into the capable hands of Mercy
Without hesitation, Mercy leaped into the air, her eyes fixed on the hoop. However, before she could release the shot, Victoria materialized in front of her, prepared to block the attempt. Stunned by Victoria's speed, Mercy panicked.
"She's here already? How? How did she get here so fast?" Mercy thought in disbelief
Despite her shock, Mercy released the shot, only for Victoria to effortlessly deflect it, initiating yet another fast break attack for the Rose Newton High School Basketball Team. Isioma, the power forward of the team, took control of the ball and raced down the court
As Isioma approached the edge of the three-pointer line, she surprised the everyone by launching a three-pointer instead of charging in for a slam dunk. The ball sailed through the air, seemingly in slow motion, before eventually meeting its target and landing inside the hoop with a satisfying swish
The Queens, determined to regain control of the game, advanced forward in possession of the ball. However, as they sought to attack, Oluchi's pass was abruptly intercepted by Uzeoma, the sharp-eyed shooting guard of the Rose Newton High School Basketball Team
In a calculated move, mirroring her teammate, Isioma's earlier play, Uzeoma surprised the Queens by opting for a three-pointer instead of driving in for a slam dunk. The ball soared through the air, tracing a perfect arc before descending gracefully into the hoop
The consecutive baskets from beyond the three-point line by the Rose Newton High School, had the Queens reeling. Panic began to set in as they frantically attempted to regain control of the game
Desperate to halt the Rose Newton High School Female Basketball Team's momentum, the Queens resumed play. however, their efforts were thwarted once again as Fisayo intercepted their pass. Quickly capitalizing on the opportunity, Fisayo tossed the ball to Uzeoma, who, without hesitation, launched a three-pointer
The few people left in the arena, watched with bated breath as the ball sailed through the air, seemingly suspended in time, before finding its mark and swishing through the hoop.
"Don't let up! Full court man-to-man defense! Let's go!" Fisayo ordered
Responding to Fisayo's commanding call, the Rose Newton High School Basketball Team Players immediately shifted into a full-court man-to-man defense. Each player took up their positions, fiercely guarding their respective Queens counterparts
The tension on the court was palpable as Oluchi received the ball. The pressure was immense, and she knew that any misstep could prove disastrous for the Queens. Cautiously, she planned her next move, only to be abruptly halted by the sound of the whistle. A travelling violation had been called
"Damn it," Mrs. Lawal muttered in frustration
Tolu, unsure of the reason behind the call, sought clarification. "Coach, what is a travelling violation?"
Mrs. Lawal provided a quick explanation, "A travelling Violation occurs when a player takes more than the allowed number of steps holding the ball without dribbling. It results in a turnover and the other team gains possession"
Determined to support and assist her team, Mrs. Lawal stood up from her seat, hoping to provide assistance in any way possible
The game resumed, with the Rose Newton High School Basketball Team now in possession of the ball. Fisayo, displaying remarkable poise under pressure, quickly capitalized on the opportunity presented by the travelling violation. With precise timing, she unleashed a three-pointer almost immediately after receiving a pass from her teammate. The ball sailed through the air, tracing a perfect arc before landing in the hoop with a satisfying swish
With only 20 seconds left in the third quarter, the Rose Newton High School Basketball Team continued to apply immense pressure on the Queens with their full-court man-to-man defense. The Queens, their decision making compromised by the intensity of their opponents' press, struggled to maintain control
Tosin, her voice echoing through the nearly empty arena, called out, "Hey! Give me the ball!"
Her teammates responded, swiftly passing the ball to her. As soon as Tosin gained possession, the Rose Newton High School Basketball Team doubled their efforts by double teaming her to contain her. Undeterred, Tosin broke free from the double-team with remarkable ease, skillfully dribbling past her opponents through the middle
Fisayo, determined to halt Tosin's advance, rushed in to confront her, but Tosin blew past her with a fiery intensity. Next, Isioma attempted to stop Tosin, only to be left in the dust as Tosin continued in her relentless drive towards the hoop. With four defenders now trailing behind her, Tosin faced Victoria, the last line of defense, her eyes burning with passionate frustration
"Victoria!!!" Tosin, screamed as she leaped from the free-throw line, ready to unleash a powerful two-handed slam dunk. In a stunning display of skill, Victoria soared to meet her, blocking Tosin's shot, causing her to stumble and fall, and denying her the seemingly guaranteed points
With the clock ticking down to 3 seconds, Victoria seized the opportunity to launch a daring counterattack. In a display of incredible speed and agility, she dashed down the court and, just as the buzzer sounded, released a three-pointer
Both teams fell silent as the ball traced its fateful arc through the air before landing in the hoop with a satisfying and resounding swish. The scoreboard now showed a score of 65-42, signaling the end of the third quarter
