Chapter 49 - CHAPTER 48

The sun was just starting to peck over the deserted streets. The air was crisp and cool, with a hint of morning dew. Amidst the quiet, rhythmic pounding of footsteps echoed through the neighborhood. A lone jogger, Tosin, with a determined look on her face, ran with purpose. Her ponytail bounced with each step as she glided effortlessly down the street

The streets were unusually empty, a stark contrast to the usual bustle of school life. It was mid-term break, and most students were lounging in their homes, enjoying the well-deserved rest. But not everyone was taking a break. The Queens had training scheduled for 10 am, and Tosin thought she could have an early morning jog before heading to school for the training

As she jogged, the sound of her red--and-white sneakers hitting the pavement was the only noise that broke the morning silence. She breathed in deeply, feeling the cool air fill her lungs. This early morning jog was her way of clearing her mind and getting her body ready for the intense training session ahead. With each step, she felt her muscles warming up, her heart rate increasing. She picked up speed, her feet pounding the ground in a steady rhythm. The jog was a ritual she cherished, a moment of solitude before the chaos of the day began

As Tosin approached the an old basketball court in the street, the feint sound of basketballs hitting the ground and people yelling became apparent with every step of the jog. The sound piqued her interest, and so she increased her pace, curiosity getting the better of her. She wanted to know who could be playing basketball at the abandoned street court at this hour

Arriving at the abandoned court, Tosin stood at the edge of the court, observing what was going on. There was a street ball tournament going on among different teams. The energy was electric with teams clashing on the court. Tosin observed that all teams had only male players. All but one team. She suddenly got interested in that team. The team had only one girl playing with them. Not just any girl but a powerhouse who dominated the game with incredible moves. Tosin was intrigued

As she watched, the girl's skills left her jaw-dropped. She was a force to be reckoned with, sinking shots and making plays with ease. The way she commanded the court, was both captivating and inspiring. Despite being the only girl in the tournament, she held her own against her male counterparts, even outshining all of them

When the tournament ended and her team won, the mysterious girl didn't linger to celebrate. She took off quickly, almost like she was trying to avoid attention

"Wait!" Tosin called out, sprinting after her. the girl heard her and picked up speed, leaving Tosin in the dust. Tosin slowed to a stop, panting slightly as she realized she couldn't catch up. "Who was that?" she wondered, her curiosity now piqued even more

The Queens gathered for their 10 am practice session, still basking in the glow of their recent victory against the Falcons. Mrs. Lawal stood before them, her expression, a blend of pride and determination

"Queens, congratulations on your incredible performance yesterday, you guys were amazing!" she praised, her voice echoing in the locker room.

The team exchanged smile and high-fives, their spirits buoyed by their coach's words. However, the momentary jubilation gave way to a renewed sense of focus as Mrs. Lawal's tone turned serious.

"Your hardwork and dedication have brought us one step closer to our dreams. But, it's only one step," she continued. "We must keep pushing, fighting, and improving if we want to reach the top"

The Queens' expression hardened, their determination growing with each passing moment

"Our next opponents are Boluwatife Oluwole High School," Mrs. Lawal announced, turning on the projector to reveal the formidable team they would soon face

Tosin's eyes widened as she scanned the image before her, a realization causing her heart to race

"This team is also known as the IRON WALL" Mrs. Lawal revealed, her gaze fixed on the projector. "Their defense is legendary – strong, unyielding, and determined. They even tried to recruit Victoria five years ago but she turned them down for reasons unknown"

As Mrs. Lawal continued, detailing their opponents' impressive history and past accomplishments, Tosin felt a nagging doubts at the back of her mind as she stared at the projector

"Four of their players are as tall as Victoria so facing them would be like facing 4 Victorias. Though, compared to Victoria, their defense is not really scary." Mrs. Lawal pointed out, the image of their formidable defense coming to mind as she described their imposing size. "They've represented Lagos at the Christmas Champions Cup on two occasions in 5 years. Simply put, they are one of the powerhouse schools in Lagos. If we can't beat them, we can't be the best in Nigeria. Tosin, what do you think?"

"Hmmmm. Coach, honestly I'm not bothered about their heights. We could even figure out how to attack against Victoria in our game against them. However, there is one player on their team that is scary," Tosin said

"Hmmm, and who might that be?" Mrs. Lawal asked, curiosity piqued

"Their number 16," Tosin replied

"Number 16?" Mrs. Lawal zoomed in to view the information about the player that Tosin was talking about. "Her?"

"Yes, Coach," Tosin replied

"Hmmm. Tosin, why do you think she'd be scary?" Mrs. Lawal asked, her tone inquiring

"Nothing, just a hunch," Tosin said, trying to brush it off

"Well, to be honest, she is not a regular. And she hardly participates in games. In fact the last time she played a game for Boluwatife Oluwole High School was two years ago," Mrs. Lawal revealed

Tosin's eyes widened in shock at the revelation

Based on stats and the information we have here, apart from their defense, we have nothing to fear. Except, perhaps, you know something we don't, Tosin." Mrs. Lawal said, looking at Tosin with a questionable gaze

Tosin forced a smile. "Yeah, you're right, it's nothing"

"Alright then, in the meantime, let the training begin!" Mrs. Lawal ordered, and the Queens sprang into action, starting their drills and exercises

The training session had left the Queens exhausted, sweat cascading down their weary faces like miniature waterfalls. They had practiced with fervor, their eagerness for the impending game nearly tangible. At 5 pm, Mrs. Lawal, their Coach, blew her whistle, its shrill sound cutting through the air and signaling the end of their session

"Gather around, Queens!" she commanded, her tone firm yet encouraging. The girls congregated around their Coach, their faces flushed from exertion. "We've reached the end of our training session for the day," Mrs. Lawal announced, her sharp eyes surveying the group. "Well done, everyone. Clean up the gym and head home to rest. Tomorrow, we reconvene at the same time"

The Queens nodded in agreement, bowing respectfully as a chorus of "Thank you very much, ma!" echoed through the gym.

As the girls dispersed, Mrs. Lawal called out, "Tosin!"

"Yes, Coach?" Tosin responded, her voice tinged with curiosity went to the staffroom to see their Coach

Upon reaching the staffroom, Tosin gently knocked on the door.

"Come in," Mrs. Lawal's voice called from inside. Tosin entered, and closed the door behind her

"Coach, you wanted to see me?" Tosin inquired, her heart thumping rapidly in her chest

"Yes, please take a seat, Tosin," Mrs. Lawal said, her gaze fixed on Tosin's face. Tosin sat down, her sense heightened. "I invited you here because I wanted to speak with you privately," Mrs. Lawal continued. "Your words during the training didn't align with your gesture and actions. The Number 16 from Boluwatiife Oluwole High School….. You're familiar with her, aren't you?"

Tosin's mind raced as she hesitated. "Coach, I don't know her personally," she said

Mrs. Lawal's eyes narrowed, scrutinizing Tosin's face. "I can tell you're holding back, Tosin. Please, be honest with me. Who is she?"

Tosin took a deep breathe, steeling herself. "Coach, I assure you that I'm being truthful. I don't know her. But I've crossed path with her once"

Mrs. Lawal's interest was piqued. "When?" she inquired

"This morning," Tosin replied, her voice steady, "I went for my usual early morning jog and stumbled upon an abandoned court in the estate. A street basketball tournament was underway, and she was there, playing against boys"

Mrs. Lawal's eyes grew wider still, "Playing against boys?"

Tosin nodded in affirmation. "Yes, she was the sole girl on the court but she outplayed them all. When the tournament concluded, she vanished without a word. I'm shocked to discover she attends Boluwatife Oluwole High School and that someone with her skill

"Please come to the staffroom immediately!" Mrs. Lawal instructed, her expression inscrutable. The rest of the team began to tidy the gymnasium, while Tosin level hasn't played in two years. There must be more to the story than meets the eye"

Mrs. Lawal's expression turned contemplative. "Tosin, given her apparent skill and our existing data, doesn't this suggest our opponents are exceptionally strong?"

Tosin nodded slowly in disagreement, "Coach, this girl's defensive skills rival Tolu's. She steals effortlessly. But when it comes to offensive plays, she's on par with Cynthia"

Mrs. Lawal's eyes widened in shock, "What?!" She consulted her tablet, scanning the information. "Her name is Ronke Adetola"

"I see," Tosin said, her expression neutral

Mrs. Lawal sighed, her gaze lingering on Ronke's profile. "Alright, Tosin, you may go. Please get some rest. Our game is in two days plus we will meet again tomorrow for training"

Tosin nodded and left the staffroom, her thoughts consumed by Ronke Adetola. As Tosin walked away, Mrs. Lawal remained seated, her eyes fixed on Ronke's photo and profile, her mind teeming with questions, "Ronke Adetola, huh? It appears we have another troublesome opponent on our hands. If that's the case, why isn't she a regular player?"

The eve of the highly anticipated National High School Basketball playoff quarterfinal clash between Charlie Queens Academy and Boluwatife Oluwole High School loomed large, with the game set to take place the next morning at 11 am. The Queens had all retired to their beds early, intending to secure a restful night's sleep in preparation for the grueling competition that lay ahead. However, four members of the team remained wide awake, each preoccupied with their own thoughts and methods of preparation

Within the confines of the Lawals' residence, Mrs. Lawal sat hunched over her laptop, her gaze unwavering as she studied the video clip of their formidable opponents

"Ibrahim! Ibrahim!!" she called out, her voice firm yet gentle

"Yes, Mummy!" her son responded promptly from the sitting room

"Please fetch me a glass of chilled water!" Mrs. Lawal requested, her mind already consumed with devising a strategy to dismantle their adversaries

As she awaited her drink, she narrowed her at the footage, asking herself, "So, how do we break this iron wall?"

Meanwhile, at the Charlie Queens Academy gymnasium, Mercy found herself lost in deep introspection, revisiting past games and analyzing her performance while practicing long range shots

"In our match against the Falcons, we could have won more easily had I made even 5 of my missed shots from the start." She mused, a trace of frustration seeping into her tone. Undeterred, she launched a three-pointer, observing with satisfaction as the ball sailed through the air and swished effortlessly through the net. Clenching her fist in triumph, a resolute glint in her eyes, Mercy declared, "I'm ready. I won't repeat past mistakes. Brace yourselves, Iron wall or whatever you call yourself. The Queens will crush you!"

In the Fashola household, Tolu could be found outside the house, practicing her ball-handling and dribbling skills, taking advantage of her parents' absence to hone her game without interruption.

"I will continue practicing for another 30 minutes before Daddy and Mummy return," she muttered, her determination etched into every movement

Within the walls of the Folasade residence, Tosin had chosen to delay her dinner, instead focusing on refining the technique she had acquired during summer break

"Tosin! Your food is growing cold!" her mother, Sade, called from the window of the sitting room

"I will eat once I finish practicing," Tosin replied, her concentration solely on mastering her skills

It's match day!

The Queens convened at the Charlie Queens Academy gymnasium for a final gathering before departing for the arena. Mrs. Lawal, their esteemed Coach, glanced at her watch

"Alright, it's 9:11 am already." She announced. "I hope everyone is present,"

"We're all here, Coach," Tolu confirmed after conducting a swift yet meticulous survey of her teammates.

"Good. It's time to leave! Victory will bring us closer to our dreams, while defeat means the end of the road. Let's win this!" Mrs. Lawal declared, her voice ringing with passion and determination

"YEAH!" The Queens responded in unison, their spirits high as they boarded the school bus and sped off to the arena

The arena pulse with an electrifying energy as spectators filed in, eagerly anticipating the hotly contested playoffs quarterfinal clash between Charlie Queens Academy and Boluwatife Oluwole High School. Students, Parents and fans filled the stands, their enthusiastic cheers and chants creating a cacophony of support for their chosen team

Adding to the vibrant atmosphere were the drummers and cheerleaders from Boluwatife Oluwole High School, while the dazzling green and white banners and jerseys adorned the arena, lending a festive air to the proceedings

As the Queens emerged onto the court for their pre-game warm-up, they were momentarily taken aback by the sheer intensity of the atmosphere. The embarrassment and jealousy they felt upon realizing that the arena was filled with Boluwatife Oluwole High School students, staffs, and parents were palpable

In stark contrast, the Iron Wall exuded an aura of self-assuredness and composure. Renowned for their impenetrable defense, their movements were fluid and synchronized, a testament to their unwavering readiness to face the Queens head-on.

After the warm-up session, both teams retreated to their locker rooms, each player mentally prepared for the intense matchup ahead

In the Boluwatife Oluwole High School Team's locker room, the team donned their green and white-striped kits, the air buzzing with anticipation as they awaited their coach's words of wisdom

"Ebere, Helen, Miracle, Peju, and Efe. These five will be our starting line-up today. Go give them hell!" Coach Rose urged, her voice resonating with determination

"YEAH!" The iron walls responded in unison, their spirits high

"Coach, what about our Captain? Will she play today?" Ebere inquired

"Yes," a voice suddenly interjected from the entrance

The team turned to see who had spoken, their eyes falling upon their beloved Captain, Ronke Adetola – The very same girl Tosin had encountered at the abandoned court, who was rumoured to possess skills rivaling Cynthia James' offensive prowess

A wave of excitement swept over the team as they rushed to welcome their Captain back into the fold. Warm embraces were exchanged as they rejoiced in her return

"Captain, we've missed you," Peju exclaimed

"I've missed you all too. You've done incredibly well without me, but not today. I'm going to play," Ronke declared, her resolve unwavering

"Alright, let's move out!" Coach Rose called out

" YEAH!!!" The Iron Walls echoed in agreement

As they began to file out, Coach Rose pulled Ronke aside for a private conversation

"Hey, Ronke. What do you mean you're playing?" Coach Rose asked, her tone laced with concern

"Exactly what it sounds like, Coach. I'm playing today. And please, don't try to stop me," Ronke snapped before walking away

Left alone, Coach Rose couldn't help but ponder the situation. "Ronke, I know how much you love Basketball. However, just loving it and being good at it aren't enough. Especially in your case, Ronke."

As both teams took their positions on the court, the Queens, donning their away white with pink striped kits, huddled around Tosin, their Captain, eager to hear her inspiring words. Tosin cleared her throat, a sense of determination settling over her features

"Hey guys," she began, her voice steady and reolute. "The last time we lost a game was against Wyse International High School in the Christmas Champions Cup. It was our debut in the competition, our first shot at a national Championship, and yet it was our final game in last year's edition of the Christmas Champions Cup. That crushing defeat was on me. I wasn't myself, and I apologize for that. I was going through the painful experience of my first heart break"

Tosin's teammates and Coach were shocked and sympathetic, having had no idea that their Captain had been grappling with such personal turmoil during that time

"John cheated on me with Victoria, another member of the Victorious Varsity." Tosin continued, laying her heart bare before her teammates. "I wasn't myself and I asked to sit out the game against Wyse International High School, but Coach insisted that I must play. So I had no choice. But don't worry about that. I'm fine now. I once said Ronke is as good as Cynthia when it comes to attacking. That wasn't an exaggeration. Ronke is a force to be reckoned with – A monster! However, I was surprised to hear that she hasn't played in two years now and today she's starting from the bench. We still don't why she hasn't played in two years. My guess is that she might be recovering from an injury she picked up two years ago. Remember I spent three years without playing because of an injury too. But be aware that she will play today. She will probably come into the game in the second half. Before she comes on, let's score as many points as we can to create an insurmountable lead – one that even Ronke cannot close, no matter what!"

"YEAH!" The Queens shouted in agreement, their spirits bolstered by their Captain's words

"Now! In 3, 2, 1, Charlie Queens! Fight!" Tosin roared, her voice ringing with conviction

"YEAH!" The Queens chorused, their determination etched on their faces as they prepare to take their positions on the court. They looked at Tosin as if she missed something during her pre-game speech

The atmosphere in the arena was electric, the tension palpable as the spectators eagerly awaited the start of the game. Both teams were ready to give their all and fight for victory

As the referee's whistle pierced the air, the game commenced with a forceful toss of the ball high into the air. Eno and Efe leaped upwards, their bodies reaching for the ball as it reached its apex. In a swift maneuver, Eno tapped the ball towards her teammates, the leather sphere landing securely in Tosin's hands. The Queens, united in their objective, surged forward to attack

"Now, then. Let's take our beloved customers on a journey to destruction city, shall we?" Tosin declared, her voice brimming with confidence

Hearing Tosin's legendary pre-game declaration for the first time in almost a year, the Queens' excitement was palpable as they cheered, "YEAH!" in genuine happiness

Back on the bench, Mrs. Lawal was astonished by Tosin's speech. "Tosin, I can't believe you were going through such a rough time back then. I've failed as a Coach. I hope you can forgive me. From here on out, we'll destroy every team we face. I'll make sure of it"

On the court, Tosin passed the ball to Oluchi, who expertly bounced it in front of Ebere's defense, establishing a steady rhythm

"Yo, Oluchi, go easy on me. I'm just the opening act," Ebere said with a smile

"Over here!" Teni yelled, momentarily drawing Oluchi's attention

Seizing the opportunity, Oluchi tossed the ball to Teni, who attempted a hasty jump shot from inside the three-point area, believing herself to be unguarded. However, Helen's towering presence allowed her to graze the ball with her fingertip, disrupting the shot and sending it ricocheting off the rim. In the ensuing scramble, Efe outmaneuvered Eno and secured the rebound before passing it to Ebere

"Let's take it easy!" Ebere urged, slowing the pace and assessing her option

Facing off against Oluchi, Ebere caught her off guard with an unexpected shot

"What?! Just like that? Without thinking? Isn't she scared of missing?" Oluchi mused

"Well, I'm not shooting because I know it will always go in. I'm shooting because it's fine even if it doesn't," Ebere retorted. The ball sailed through the air, bounced off the rim, and was once again rebounded by Efe, who capitalized on the opportunity and slammed it into the hoop, scoring the first basket of the game for the Iron Walls

"I didn't notice during the jump ball, but these girls aren't just tall – they are huge!" Eno said

"Yeah, beating them is going to be tough," Tosin agreed

As the game resumed, the Queens regained possession of the ball, with Oluchi expertly bouncing it in front Ebere's defense

"I have to stay focused against her. She's dangerous. I can't let her do whatever she wants," Ebere thought to herself, her expression hardening with determination

Displaying her skill, Oluchi cleverly passed the ball to Kevwe, catching the entire defense off guard. Kevwe took a quick step forward before attempting a jump shot, only for the ball to be grazed by Miracle's fingertips, sending it careening off the rim. Efe swiftly seized the rebound and passed it to Ebere

"Counter!" Ebere shouted as soon as the ball was in her hands, spotting Peju sprinting towards the opposite hoop. With precise aim, Ebere tossed the ball to her teammate

The ball landed deftly in Peju's grasps as she closed in on the hoop, her eyes locked on the target. Tosin, however, was hot on her heels, sprinting to halt Peju's advance.

"Bring it on!" Tosin yelled, settling into a defensive stance

Undeterred, Peju came to an abrupt stop and transitioned into her shooting motion, catching Tosin off guard. The ball soared through the air in a graceful arc and swished through the hoop, widening the Iron Walls' lead

"Damn!" Tosin cursed, her frustration etched on her face.

It's just as Mrs. Lawal said. The Queens were facing a formidable opponent, and if they couldn't find a way to overcome the iron walls, it's the end of the road for them
