In the year 2120, humanity doomed itself while trying to save the world. To protect the planet from a looming asteroid the size of a moon, global nations united completely, pouring every resource into building a massive, planet-wide dome.
Ten years later, in 2130, a politician stood on a grand stage, addressing a massive crowd.
"Even with our advanced technology, and even with every single human being working toward the same goal, it still took us five desperate years to finish the shield," the speaker projected into the microphone. "We were rushing just to survive."
He paused, looking out over the audience.
"But in that rush, a critical error was made. We forgot to engineer the dome to let external heat in. Now, we are trapped beneath the surface of a freezing world. Yet, look around you! We still hold the same power and technology we had before the freeze. One day, humanity will reclaim the surface once again!"
The crowd erupted into intense cheering, clapping, and whistling. The speaker waved warmly to the crowd before stepping off the stage.
Miles away at a bustling construction yard, Welter listened to the broadcast through a single wireless earbud. Standing just barely six feet tall, with cropped brown hair, honest gray eyes, and a handsome but rugged face, his body had been built tough by years of hard labor. He smiled to himself, hoisting a heavy steel plate off the back of a delivery truck.
"Welter, over here!" a voice called out.
A woman waved at him from across the yard.
Salme rushed forward and threw her arms around him. Looking up into his gray eyes, she beamed. "I'm so happy we got assigned to the same work site!"
Welter smiled warmly, wrapping his arms around her in return. "I know, right? I'm so glad."
Salme pulled him down a fraction of an inch, pressing a quick peck onto his lips.
Before they could say more, a supervisor's voice boomed across the yard. "Back to work, everyone!"
The moment broke, and the laborers quickly dispersed back to their stations, eager to unload the fresh materials from the newly arrived trucks.
