*Chapter 63: The Second Day*
Li Xue awoke to the faint scent of incense drifting from the streets below. Her best friend had promised to spend the entirety of the New Year with her, but obligations with Shen Wei prevented it. Li Xue did not complain; she had learned early that voicing needs was often pointless.
Instead, she focused on her younger brother, accompanying him to the park. The air was crisp, the streets lined with lanterns, and the distant boom of fireworks echoed faintly. He laughed freely, tugging her along as they ran between performers, acrobats, and street vendors. Each moment was precious, untainted by fear. Li Xue allowed herself to smile, to laugh lightly, even if it faded quickly in the back of her mind where Zhao Liang's presence awaited.
Later, they shared a small snack — fried dumplings and sweet pastries. Her brother's hand brushed hers briefly, and she felt a warmth unlike anything the penthouse could provide. His innocence, unburdened by contracts or cruelty, reminded her of what life could be beyond these walls.
By evening, they returned to the penthouse. Zhao Liang had not come yet, and for a fleeting moment, Li Xue let herself breathe, savoring the temporary reprieve. She placed the small trinkets and snacks carefully in her bag, little markers of a day where fear had not dictated her every move.
