Evangeline opened her mouth, ready to explain, ready to tell Cerdery that nothing had happened the way it seemed, that Hades had been suffering from the pain in his stomach when he suddenly collapsed with a sharp headache he suffered on his head. Yet before a single word could leave her lips, Cerdery spoke first.
The words that spilled from the woman's mouth were foreign, spoken in a language Evangeline did not recognize. It flowed fast yet clipped and bitter, each syllable heavy with irritation. Evangeline could only stand there, frozen, her eyes darting between them as she tried and failed to grasp even a fragment of what was being said. The meaning was lost to her ears, but not to her heart.
Cerdery's expression said enough.
