From the very beginning, Evangeline had noticed the strange way Phoebe looked at her.
She tried not to judge people by their expressions alone because eyes could be misleading, and emotions often slipped out unintentionally. But there were moments, small moments Phoebe herself probably didn't realize she revealed, where her gaze would sharpen into something almost hostile.
Especially whenever Evangeline tried to comfort her.
At times Phoebe would look at her as though the kindness itself was unbearable to hear, as though Evangeline was some hypocrite pretending to understand things she never truly suffered through herself.
At first, Evangeline thought that perhaps things would improve with time. Maybe once they became closer, once Phoebe learned more about her, she would realize Evangeline never meant any harm.
Until she overheard what Phoebe truly thought of her.
That memory still lingered unpleasantly in her chest.
