3rd person POV
"Now!"
The nameless girl suddenly rushed at the alpha direwolf, her right hand grasping the arrow as she hid it behind her.
Without wasting any time, the alpha slashed at her head as she came in its range.
'Oh shit, why is she so close to it? This was never part of the plan!' David's heart almost clenched at the bold move from the girl. All he had asked her was to distract the alpha long enough and poke at it with the metal head of the arrow. And if by any chance she could do it...she should have thrown the arrow at the alpha's eye.
As if by a miracle, the girl suddenly stumbled at a protruding root as her body jerked forward without any control. As a result, the claw missed her head by inches and the girl stabbed the muscular chest of the massive direwolf.
But as expected, not a single cut appeared on the direwolf's chest. Instead, it lowered its head and stared at the girl with a calm, predatory look.
'Well...there goes her luck and my plan. Time to execute plan B...if I even have one.'
Not wanting to see another human die even if he had known her for only few hours, David jumped forward as with a low sweep he picked up the bow from the ground and an arrow that was just beside it.
The bowstring stretched taut as the feather fletched arrow was pulled into place by David.
'As I said before, I am not that useless. I have picked up few skills from time to time.' He thought inwardly albeit focussing on the alpha.
From the left of the alpha, Shogun had appeared as well as he attempted to smash the mace on the direwolf's head. But the alpha crouched low as it deliberately dodged the attack and extended its right claw toward the nameless girl, who in panic had forgotten to even move away from the wolf.
'Shogun's attack had created a good distraction for her to escape...but it seems her body just didn't react in her moment of hysteria.'
But he didn't waste a single moment. Aiming, he fired the arrow.
It flew at an incredible speed and pierced the left eye of the alpha with a squelching sound. Instantly, Shogun jumped into the direwolf's range of attack as he pushed the nameless girl away.
He too rolled from under the alpha who was now stomping on random spots and growling in pain.
I looked around me and just as I had expected, the other direwolves went in a frenzy as well. They were slashing and clawing wherever they could, without any proper aim. They even cut at each other, as if they had suddenly all gone blind.
'This is a diabolical mind control and a double edged sword. But even then I am sure, the alpha won't release these poor direwolves from his mind control. Because the moment he does that, the direwolves that had not been feeling any pain from their injuries shall suddenly drown in their own cries of pain.'
Shogun struck the frenzied alpha as it staggered back, releasing its staunch hold on Draven.
Draven rose up from the ground with great effort as Shogun pulled him away from the direwolf. Together, they moved a little distance away from the alpha.
Those two were soon joined by Thorgar who looked like he would faint any moment just from the number of cuts he had on his entire body.
"We cannot fight. They still too many in number." He rasped in shaky breaths, all his ego and pride seemingly broken under the multiple onslaughts of the direwolves.
The alpha calmed down a little. Then it's remaining eye fell on David, who had not only shot it but was also nearest to it's range.
Throwing back its head, it let out a blood curling howl that sent goosebumps rising on David's skin. Doing that, it raised its right paw and with an astounding force slammed it on the ground.
Instantly an invisible wave passed in the region as the impact sent cracks spreading in the ground. David and the others found themselves wobbling for balance.
Taking that advantage, the alpha jumped sideways and with a powerful kick with its hind legs hurled the nameless girl in the air, who fell to the ground with a loud shriek. In a moment, the direwolves who were once again in the alpha's control sprinted over to her.
"Nameless! Throw my bow towards me!! Fast." Draven shouted at the top of his lungs as the battle resumed again.
'Why did the arrow I use didn't burst into flames...? Was that an ability of Draven?' But he didn't have any time to think further and swinging his arms threw the bow in the air.
The alpha tracked tha bow but didn't make any attempt at stopping it. Instead, it ran.
Straight towards David.
Its speed suddenly increased by multiple times as it sped towards him, leaving everyone dazed in its wake.
Almost at the last second, David moved out of the path through which the alpha bolted past.
It didn't stop but with a powerful sweep of its massive tail, struck David in the chest as he too flew back.
He fell on the ground but before he could even recover from it, the alpha's tail once again looped around his leg and pulled him. David screeched in agony. Several cuts appeared on his cheek, his chest and his legs as his entire body grazed against the tiny rocks and objects that lay on the ground.
Dust entered his eyes and the sharp blades of grasses sliced through his skin as he passed them by.
"Ugh. Leave me bastard, damn you." Through it all, David could only curse the predator as he lay on his stomach and was dragged away by the direwolf.
A sense of danger made his heart thump crazily in his ribcage. It almost seemed on the verge of bursting out. David didn't know where he was being even taken away.
But one thing that he could say for sure was that he was already far away from the group. At this point he could only hear the distant screams of his group, their voices fading away the more the wolf dragged him away.
'Now where is this big dog taking me to?' He thought as he tried struggling against it's hold for what was probably the hundreth time.
Sighing, he felt his energy being drained away the more he tried. 'This isn't going to work...' He realised.
Under the starry sky, a direwolf dragged a human in the loop of its powerful tail, the tall grasses doing little to obstruct their path or to hide the food chain that the so called nature had imposed on them all.
