In the twenty-sixth minute Atalanta enjoyed their longest spell of sustained possession as the ball moved from Musso to Tolói to Demiral to Djimsiti before returning to De Roon who had dropped between the center-backs to create a numerical advantage in the build-up.

De Roon's pass went forward to Koopmeiners who was positioned centrally with space to turn because Medel had been drawn slightly wide by Malinovskyi's movement, and the Dutch midfielder's first touch opened his body toward the attacking third where Demien had positioned himself twenty yards from Bologna's goal.

Two Bologna midfielders closed immediately as Koopmeiners prepared to pass, and his weight shifted right while his body shape suggested the pass would go wide toward Hateboer, and Medel adjusted his position to cut off that passing lane.
