Chapter 43 - Chapter 41: The House-Elf Who Steals Letters

To continue our story, Harry saw the short creature stop his owl and steal his letter, and he knew this scoundrel was the reason he hadn't received any mail for days.

A vicious anger surged in his heart. He slowly approached, threw off the Invisibility Cloak, and drew his saber.

"Thieving beast! Taste my blade!"

The short creature, seeing Harry, looked panicked. He snapped his fingers, and his body vanished, reappearing several steps away.

The saber hit empty air. Harry was stunned. This strange scoundrel is skilled! He has the ability to move heaven and earth. Could it be Apparition?

"Oh! Harry Potter has found me!" the creature shrieked. He pulled his long ears and banged his head against the wall. "Stupid Dobby! Bad Dobby! You got caught by Mr. Harry Potter!"

The creature began to punish himself, hitting himself violently, as if he had lost his mind. His head hammered the stone wall like a drum; he slapped his own face; his body trembled like a sieve.

Though the creature was violent to himself, Harry ignored it, thinking it a ploy. He rushed forward and swung his saber again.

"You avian cur! This grandfather is not some vegetarian, sutra-chanting Bodhisattva!"

The blade cut through the night wind. The creature snapped his fingers again, reappearing several meters away, wailing, "Sir, Dobby did not mean to steal your letters! Dobby only hoped you would forget your wizard friends—it is the only way to protect you!"

Hearing this, Harry thought: This scoundwrel is strange. He steals my mail, yet speaks of protecting my life.

But this pest is slippery. I'll listen to his chatter for a moment, and when I see an opening, I'll chop off his head.

Thinking this, Harry planted his saber in the ground. "You scoundrel, report your name to me."

"Oh! Sir, my name is Dobby. Dobby the house-elf."

Dobby's bulging eyes streamed tears like broken pearls, carving paths through the grime on his wrinkled skin, soaking his filthy rag.

"Dobby has heard of your greatness, sir. But Dobby only learned of your kindness today... willing to listen to a lowly house-elf speak..."

"And yet I stole sir's letters! Bad Dobby! Bad Dobby!"

One moment Dobby was praising Harry's virtue, the next he was seized by madness, harming himself, seemingly unaware of pain.

His wailing annoyed Harry, who roared, "Silence!"

The shout stopped Dobby, who swallowed his cries.

Harry said, "You scoundrel, you wish to protect my life? From what danger?"

"Ah! Sir is willing to believe me!" Dobby looked joyful, then terrified. "A great terrible thing is going to happen at Hogwarts this year! No one can escape the disaster! It is too dangerous for sir to go to school!"

"You must cut off all ties with the wizarding world."

Harry was suspicious. "If there is truly a disaster at Hogwarts, how do you know?"

Dobby opened his mouth, then dropped to his knees, banging his head on the ground. "Bad Dobby! Bad Dobby! Must be punished!"

"Almost betrayed master! Stupid Dobby! Idiot Dobby!"

Seeing this scoundrel starting his noisy self-harm again, Harry slammed his saber on the ground to silence him.

Dobby, who revered Harry's name as the Savior, immediately quieted down, his bulging eyes darting around.

Harry, finding his words suspicious, thought for a moment. "Who do you serve? What is your master's name?"

"No! Dobby cannot tell sir! Dobby cannot be a bad house-elf!" Dobby looked terrified and was about to smash his head again, but he feared Harry's anger.

"But, sir, Dobby is not protecting you under anyone's orders! You are the Savior, so great, so kind... Dobby must protect you from danger..."

Harry listened to this chatter for a long time. It was just like Dumbledore's—all vague, evasive avian talk. It ignited the scarred lad's temper, and he lost the patience to speak.

"You there, Dobby. Hand over my letters, take a beating from this one, and I will let this matter go."

"No problem!" Dobby's strange eyes lit up. "Then sir is not going to Hogwarts?"

Harry sneered. "This old master is going! Even if that scoundrel Voldemort has set a mountain of knives and a sea of fire, this one will charge in!"

"No! Why won't sir listen to Dobby's warning!" Dobby shook his head in terror. "If sir does not promise, Dobby cannot give back the—"

Before he finished, Harry thrust his saber.

This Dobby had stolen his letters, yet acted righteous. How could Harry endure it? He only wanted to chop off this scoundrel's head.

"Sir, please! You really cannot go back to Hogwarts!"

Dobby snapped his fingers, vanished, and dodged the blade.

But Harry was prepared. He whipped out his wand and cast a lightning charm nearby.

Dobby reappeared just as the spell struck him. There was a flash of light, and after a few screams, he passed out.

This was the perfect chance. Harry raised his saber to strike. But Dobby's eyes suddenly flew open. "No! Master is calling Dobby!"

He snapped his fingers and appeared on a roof beam.

"Dobby will never let sir fall into danger! I will continue to protect sir in my own way!"

Another snap, and he was gone.

As Dobby fled, Hedwig regained her senses. She looked around, then flew to Harry's shoulder and nestled down.

Although the spell had left Dobby scorched, the anger in Harry's chest was not spent.

That Dobby had spoken of "continuing to protect" him. To Harry's ears, it only meant he would "continue to intercept his letters."

Harry's heart grew heavy. He wrapped his saber in the Invisibility Cloak and returned to Privet Drive with Hedwig.

It was a quarter past midnight. Harry pushed open the door and found the lights on. The Dursleys were all sitting on the sofa.

Seeing Harry, Vernon gave a nasty smile and threw a letter at him.

"Well, boy, how was your little night out? Did you have so much fun you forgot you're not allowed to use your tricks here?"

"You didn't tell us you're not allowed to use magic outside of school." Vernon's eyes were malicious. "Forgot to mention it... Slipped your mind, I suppose..."

"Well, I'm telling you, boy, I'm locking you up! You're never going back to that school. And if you use magic to escape—they'll expel you!"

Vernon, having said his piece, felt immensely satisfied. Petunia and Dudley also looked at him with admiration.

Harry was already in a foul mood, and now these three were prodding his sore spot. He threw off the Invisibility Cloak. With a shing, he drew his saber and roared, "You three avian curs, do you wish to test how sharp my blade is!"

And so it was, a spell was cast, leaving Dobby scorched; an owl sent a letter, but using a wand was against the law. Dursley saw the letter and grew bold, wanting to lock up the scarred lad; but from under the cloak, the saber came out, ready to show him death.
