Chapter 10 - Dejected

After some time, Sloane and her boyfriend left when they had seen everything to their satisfaction. However, Coral's mood fell. She didn't get a good vibe from them.

"Are you okay?" Einar asked.

"Yeah.."

But Einar read her thoughts. She knew her very well.

"I didn't like them too. They look like troublesome people. Did you notice their tattoos?"

"Yeah. They were weird." Coral said.

Sloane and her boyfriend both had tattoos on their bodies. They didn't have anything against people having tattoos, but their tattoos were scary-looking and their attitude was also rowdy. They didn't appeared friendly to Coral.

"If she creates any problem, you will inform me, okay? I'm just moving out of this apartment, but I'm still nearby. If necessary, we'll find another place for you. Don't worry about anything." Einar reassured her.

She knew Coral was a shy and timid girl. She couldn't get along with everyone easily. Moreover Sloane appeared to have a totally different personality from Coral.

Coral nodded at her words. After a while, they sat down to eat their dinner.

.....

The next morning, when Coral stepped out of the elevator, she found the corridor empty. Only a guard stood by the side. Even the woman on the counter hadn't arrived. Well, the office started at 10, so it was understandable since it was still five minutes to 9.

She nodded at the guard and headed for her cabin. When she opened the double doors, she found Liam. He had just come out of the president's office.

"Oh, good morning, Miss Stone." He greeted.

"Good morning, Mr. Brook. Has Mr. Knight arrived?"

"Yes, Miss Stone." He replied.

Coral's face paled and she checked the time. "Am I late?"

"No, you're on time. It's just he arrived earlier today. But you don't have to worry. Just go and ask if he needs something. I'm going out for some work." He informed and left.

Taking a sigh of relief, she went to her desk and sat down, placing her bag down. She wanted to calm her nerves before facing the boss. But she didn't get the chance to do that as the intercom rang and his voice came.

"Bring me my coffee."

She was again startled by his voice. But what made her shocked was the fact that how he knew she had arrived. She looked around anxiously. She felt like someone was keeping an eye on her. When she found nothing, she stood up and headed towards the other side of the office to bring coffee for him.

After a while, she brought his coffee and placed it on his desk. As always his gaze was fixed on the computer.

"Your coffee, sir." She said, drawing his attention.

Without averting his gaze from the computer, he grabbed the mug and brought it to his lips, taking a sip. But immediately, his expression turned ugly.

"Why is there sugar?"

Coral's face turned pale. "I didn't know that..."

"Then why didn't you ask?" He frowned, placing the mug back on the desk.

Coral lowered her head. She should have asked him. It was just that she hadn't think much about it. But she didn't dare utter a word. Otherwise, he would say that she was making another excuse.

"Are you going to stand here like an idiot or are you going to make another coffee?"

"Sorry, sir." She said and left with the mug.

She returned after a while with another mug of coffee.

"It's too bitter." he stated immediately after taking a sip from it. "Can't you make a simple coffee?"

Coral felt dejected. Her day started off badly again. "I am sorry, sir. I don't know your preference, so..."

"All you did from yesterday was make excuses for everything. You wouldn't survive a week like this here." He cut her off.

Swallowing the insult, she returned to make another mug of coffee. This time, she put in more effort. She searched the internet and, using her own cooking experience, prepared the coffee.

She placed it on his table for the third time, praying silently. She had no idea what would happen if he didn't like this one either. Would he fire her? But Danzel didn't say anything after drinking the coffee.

"Is it good, sir?" She asked nervously.

"Since you can't do it perfectly, I'll have to make do with it. I can't possibly spend my entire day tasting your horrible coffee, can I?" he replied sharply.

Coral was speechless.

"Tell me my schedule today." He stated next.

It was her cue that the topic had finally ended, even though he didn't like her coffee. Nevertheless, she let out a sigh of relief.

"One minute, sir." She returned to her cabin and took the tablet with her before entering the office again.

She read the schedule to him without noticing his frosty gaze on her. There was a meeting two hours later, so he told her to do the preparation. She was told to print the documents that were sent to her computer and arrange them properly. After that, she needed to do a summary of the documents.

Two hours passed in a blink of an eye, and she managed to finish the work before time. When they arrived at the meeting room, like the previous day, everyone was present there. Coral followed Danzel silently as she entered after him and stood by the side after he took his seat. Raymond was present as well and he gave her a friendly smile, which she returned. However, Danzel saw their exchange and glared at Raymond. As Liam was absent, Coral had to manage everything as Danzel's assistant secretary. She distributed the documents to everyone. This time, she read and followed every instruction. And luckily, nothing had gone wrong until the meeting ended.

One thing she realized was that there was a lot to know in the meetings as they discussed everything in details. She was always a brilliant student and she was able to easily grasp things. During the meeting, she didn't have to do much apart from transferring the documents as needed.

At the end of the meeting, everyone left except Danzel. As his secretary, she silently stood in her place while the man was looking at the papers in front of him.

"Gather the documents." He said finally and got busy with his phone.

Coral began to gather the documents. But since they were scattered in front of him, she had to stretch out her hand to reach the one lying farther away. To maintain a safe distance between them, she walked around him and gathered the papers from the other side. She was moving back and forth around him to collect the papers. Her activity drew his attention and he looked at her.

"What are you doing?"

"Collecting the papers, sir." Coral replied.

In her haste, she bumped into a chair and a few of the papers fell down and scattered on the floor.

"I'm sorry." She placed the papers in her hand in front of him before crouching down to pick up the ones on the floor.

The papers had fallen near his shoes. She got closer while stretching her hand to pick the paper. Her hand accidentally touched his knees and she froze.

"What the hell are you doing?" Danzel frowned at her.

"Sorry, sir, the papers were there." She said and quickly stood up, taking a step back to stand a distance away.

"Do you think I'm a fool, Miss Stone?" He clenched his jaw, thinking she was doing it deliberately to get close to him.

"Fool? Why would I think you're a fool, sir?" Coral asked, confused.

Her actions were naive and somewhat unprofessional, reflecting her lack of experience in such situations. But Danzel misunderstood her intentions.

"Shut up! Don't think I'm not understanding what you're trying to do." He said, fuming. "Gather the papers and bring them to my office." He barked, giving the orders, and left the meeting room.

Dumbfounded, Coral gathered all the things and double-checked everything before leaving as well.
