Chapter 77 - 'SEE YOU MORNING' 077 The Return of an Old Friend 《

The next morning, HR representative Wu Yaping directed Lin Yuhui to first complete onboarding procedures in the lobby on the first floor of the office building. The ground floor featured only a few meeting rooms and a long, open lobby stretching the entire length of the building. One side displayed models of the company's products, while the other housed an open discussion area.

The design department where Lin Yuhui works is on the third floor. The second floor appears to be conference rooms. All the design department staff are in one room—quite a few people for the limited space. You can imagine how uncomfortable it gets during seasonal temperature changes.

And so his work began. This was an incinerator company specializing in organic waste gas treatment. After selling the equipment to clients, it required installation and construction, along with corresponding piping. This meant relevant design drawings were needed—a routine task for Lin Yuhui. Before he knew it, Friday's work was done.

On his weekend day off, following his usual routine, Lin Yuhui set out to familiarize himself with the surrounding area while taking a stroll. This entire district was industrial, with roads separating the larger zones. Following the neighborhood roads northward, Lin Yuhui reached the end of the street and discovered a small riverside village. This wasn't unusual—Shanghai's very structure is built around its waterways. What was novel, however, were the several tour boats moored in the river. They were the kind with colorful fiberglass hulls and paddles—red, green, blue—but having been abandoned for years, their paint had faded.

Lin Yuhui found it rather charming, with a nostalgic appeal to everyday life. He followed the cement-paved path along the riverbank, crossing a stone bridge spanning the two banks. On the opposite shore stood a house that seemed rather distinctive: its courtyard wall was clad in white ceramic tiles, topped with a rounded archway. Potted flowers adorned the entrance, while a large, leafy tree stood within the yard, its branches thick with foliage, as if bearing witness to the passage of time in this courtyard.

The bulletin boards at the bridgehead are filled with information about combating the novel coronavirus. This small village has few households, and its permanent residents seem even fewer—only a handful of elderly people here and there.

At that moment, a black dog trotted along the path ahead. Uncertain of its intentions, Lin Yuhui kept a close eye on its movements, watching for any signs of aggression.

As it approached, it stopped in its tracks, looking calm. It lifted its head and sniffed in Lin Yuhui's direction—that's how dogs identify people. Lin Yuhui chuckled inwardly, thinking, I haven't showered in a week. I'm practically rotten, and you still come over to sniff me.

The dog reacted calmly, neither barking nor approaching Lin Yuhui too closely. After sniffing him, it turned its head toward the small stone bridge, presenting its rear to him. This reminded Lin Yuhui of twenty years ago—another black female dog, kept in a rented house near the project department's workers' canteen. When he first went there to eat, that dog had also turned its rear toward him the moment he arrived. Lin Yuhui couldn't help but wonder if, in the cycle of life, he had once been a dog himself. Why else would female dogs show him such favor? Even funnier, it was always black mongrels—no other dogs ever behaved this way.

Lin Yuhui walked around it and continued onward, and the good dog didn't block his path. The path ahead grew narrower, and the houses looked somewhat dilapidated. Some seemed to have been repurposed—there were processing machines inside, perhaps farm equipment needed by the village. Beyond the dog, the village also had kittens and a large rooster strolling leisurely. The path ended at a fence and a locked gate, appearing to be a private orchard. Lin Yuhui glanced inside before turning back to retrace his steps.

Walking back to that distinctive white arched courtyard, Lin Yuhui admired it once more from across the small stream, regretting not having brought his camera. Such time-honored local scenery held great value for documentation. Yet the spirited young man who once carried a 135 film SLR to capture beauty was no more—too many years and setbacks had passed.

When Lin Yuhui turned back onto the main road, he noticed that the black dog had somehow slipped up behind him. Turning to look at it, Lin Yuhui couldn't help but feel a pang of emotion. Doggie, doggie, this is the last time we'll see each other in this lifetime. As if understanding his thoughts, the dog lowered its head, trotting over with little, quick steps, then passed him, as if leading the way for his departure.

This season is prime time for oranges to ripen. With numerous orchards in the area offering fresh fruit at affordable prices, Lin Yuhui stocked up on dinner and fruit before heading back to the dorm. After finishing his meal, he connected to the Wi-Fi from the office building across the street. Munching on oranges, he tuned in to the Formula 1 Turkish Grand Prix broadcast—naturally, with commentary from Shanghai's Five Star Sports channel.

This was a spectacular rain-soaked standing start. Though the rain wasn't heavy, the freshly laid asphalt made the track extremely slippery. The Ferrari cars were truly struggling, but Vettel, starting from eleventh position, climbed eight places within just a few corners after the start. Lin Yuhui holds this driver's wet-weather skills in high regard. Back when he first entered F1, driving the Red Bull junior car, he delivered several stunning performances in rainy races.

This year's Mercedes cars hold a significant advantage, but they seem to be struggling to adapt to this particular track. Meanwhile, Red Bull's Verstappen is hot on Vettel's tail but unable to overtake due to the slippery conditions. His prowess in wet conditions was already proven at the 2016 Brazilian Grand Prix, and Lin Yuhui believes he has reached the same level as legends like Senna and Schumacher.

Copying the 2019 Mercedes race-winning twin cars, they raced to the front, seemingly well-suited for the wet conditions.

Oranges are sweet and sour, refreshing to eat, but you shouldn't have too many or you'll ruin your teeth.

After running over a dozen laps, racing lines began to appear. But unlike most other track surfaces, this one seemed to have more than just water—there appeared to be an oil film beneath it. Even as the rain tires expelled water, the asphalt surface still didn't deliver the expected grip. Verstappen followed Vettel, persistently trying wider outside lines through the corners like Schumacher did in the 90s. But the track was too slippery here, and the outside line offered no better grip.

As the race progressed, the track gradually dried out, yet it remained unsuitable for slick tires—this circuit's characteristics made it too slippery. However, the changing surface allowed Mercedes' performance to gradually come to the fore, with Hamilton steadily building his lead.

Lin Yuhui acknowledged Hamilton as an exceptional driver but expressed dislike for him due to his involvement with Black Lives Matter. Lin strongly opposed the ideology of white liberals. Nevertheless, he recognized Hamilton's profound respect for Michael Schumacher.

Leclerc is a fast driver, but his speed comes from taking excessive risks. While he may be slightly quicker than his teammate, Lin Yuhui doubts he could maintain that pace and consistency if subjected to the pressure of driving for Ferrari.

Sure enough, Leclerc made a mistake at the end of the race—perhaps too greedy or aggressive—and his third-place finish was snatched away by his teammate Vettel.

After watching the thrilling game, Lin Yuhui followed his routine: washing his face, feet, and socks before heading to bed.
