"We are home," Alexander said softly.
That single word settled her nerves more than anything else.
The doors opened.
The mansion stood illuminated with warm lights glowing through tall windows, the driveway lined with staff standing in quiet, formal rows.
Pauline stepped forward first.
"Come," she extended her hand and Evelyn took it.
The moment Evelyn crossed the threshold, the head butler bowed deeply.
"Welcome home, Madam Reid."
The words echoed.
One by one, the staff followed, measured bows, respectful nods, voices soft but clear.
"Welcome, Madam."
"Good evening, Madam Reid."
"It's an honor."
Olivia, who was standing in one corner, pursed her lips. All these years, she hadn't realized how much she needed this acknowledgment, this legitimacy, until she was given freely to Evelyn.
Margaret stood just inside the hall with cane in hand and eyes sharp and proud.
"Well," she said, surveying Evelyn from head to toe, "you wear the name well."
