Chapter 73 - Chapter 74 The Death of Hulk and the Survival of Banner

Lake Culver, on the surface, had returned to its calm state.

The same was true beneath the surface.

The murky lake water washed over Hawke's body.

Hawke's gaze was expressionless as he stared at the massive, green body lying motionless in the muddy lakebed before him.

Hulk!

Yes.

It was dead.

The manner of its death was simple, just as Hawke had arranged: trapped in the water and drowned.

But easier said than done.

Hawke glanced at his current inner universe.

Within it, chaos reigned; even the Phoenix constellation star chart that illuminated it was now dim and lifeless.

There was no way around it.

Hulk was indeed very strong. Even ordinary people unleashing unparalleled power when drowning, let alone Hulk, who grew stronger with rage.

Hulk's last-ditch effort nearly sent Hawke into the Phoenix constellation, initiating his fiery rebirth.

But he still won.

Hawke gazed at Hulk's corpse lying quietly on the lakebed, silently reflecting on his actions.

Just then, wisps of green light emerged from Hulk's massive body, then whooshed into Hawke's body. *

Buzz!*

Hawke felt the light begin to slowly rotate on its own, as if drawing the green light into his own inner universe.

As the wisps of green light entered his inner universe, the previously dilapidated universe blossomed with new life.

"This is..."

"Gamma power?"

Hawke raised an eyebrow, looking at Hulk beneath his feet.

As the power of death was completely absorbed by his inner universe, the massive body began to shrink, the green light on its surface gradually dimming.

Finally, the colossal Hulk vanished without a trace as the last of his power disappeared, replaced by Bruce Banner, lying on the lakebed, his fate unknown.

Hawke's eyes flickered as he watched Bruce Banner appear.

On the shore of Lake Culver,Gwen was still staring wide-eyed, holding her breath, motionless as she watched the now calm lake.

Just then,

  *Boom!*

The lake exploded. Gwen's pupils contracted.

The next moment, seeing Hawke emerge from the water and reappear before her, she couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief, her tense face breaking into a wide smile.

Gwen immediately ran towards Hawke, who had landed on the shore carrying Bruce Banner.

"Hawk!"

*Thump!*

Hawke, whose upper clothes had been torn in the fight and whose casual pants were also tattered, tossed Bruce Banner aside and then smiled as he watched Gwen run towards him, tears streaming down her face.

The next second,he collapsed to the side.

"Holy shit!"

"Hawk!"

Gwen was startled at first, then quickly quickened her pace, catching Hawke just as he fell, her voice trembling, "What's wrong?"

Hawke's head rested on Gwen's shoulder.

"I'm fine."

"Liar."

Gwen looked at Hawke's pale face and almost cried.

Hawke shook his head.

"Really fine, just exhausted."

"...Really?"

"Yeah."

Hawke nodded.

His fight with the Hulk had indeed left him feeling exhausted after his cosmos burned.

He was alright underwater, since he was still in combat mode, but as soon as he came ashore, he was completely drained.

An endless feeling of weakness and powerlessness instantly overwhelmed every corner of his body.

However after absorbing the power of gamma, the previously dimmed Phoenix constellation in his cosmos slowly brightened again, and his powerful self-healing ability was rapidly eliminating this feeling of powerlessness.

Although it wouldn't be as quick as it took for Hawke to return to his peak condition in the blink of an eye.

But in the blink of an eye, color returned to his pale face.

Seeing the color return to Hawke's cheeks, Gwen was finally convinced of Hawke's words and breathed a sigh of relief.

Then, as if remembering something, she helped Hawke up while her gaze fell on Bruce Banner lying on the ground.

Perhaps because of his Hulk transformation, Bruce Banner had put on a pair of shared shorts to avoid the embarrassing situation of being naked after transforming and reverting.

Gwen looked at Bruce Banner, soaking wet and only wearing shorts, and glanced at Hawke leaning against her shoulder.

"He's not dead?"

"No."

"Then the Hulk..."

"The Hulk is dead."

Hawke said with certainty, then his gaze fell on the motionless Bruce Banner lying on the ground: "But he's not dead."

After all, the Hulk is the Hulk, and Bruce Banner is Bruce Banner.

Hawke had been surprised to see Bruce Banner appear after Hulk's death.

Hulk was dead, but Bruce Banner wasn't. However, after instinctively opening his eyes beneath the lakebed, Bruce Banner swallowed several mouthfuls of water and choked to death.

Hawke had hesitated for a moment about whether to leave Bruce Banner at the bottom of the lake.

But Hawke chuckled softly, smelling Gwen's scent, and said weakly, "It was Hulk who killed my sister, not Bruce Banner."

Just as he had insisted from the beginning.

If Bruce Banner had killed his sister, he wouldn't have been spouting nonsense; he would have already smashed Bruce Banner to pieces.

The grievances have their source, the debts their debtors.

Hulk was dead.

His feud with Bruce Banner was settled.

That was why he brought Bruce Banner ashore from the bottom of the lake.

"Then he..."

"He choked, he'll probably wake up in a while."

"...Okay."

"Let's go back."

Hawke said, glancing at the sky, and said to Gwen, "If we go back now, we should be able to get home before your curfew."

Gwen raised an eyebrow, seemingly thinking of something, and shook her head.

"I don't think that's very likely."

"What happened?"

"Our car was smashed."

  "..."

With Gwen's help, Hawke saw the yellow Corolla, which, despite being parked far away, was still a total wreck.

He also saw Natasha Romanoff lying on the grass not far away, sleeping soundly like a baby.

Gwen met Hawke's gaze, her tone innocent, and quickly explained,"I didn't mean to knock her out. I saw her take out her phone and thought she was going to warn someone, so I knocked her unconscious with a stick."

"Uh..."

Hawke looked at Gwen's innocent face and even more innocent tone, thought for a moment, and took back the words he was about to tell Natasha her identity. Instead, he asked, "Do you have a phone?"

Gwen took out her phone from her pocket.

"Yes."

"1-646..."

Gwen supported the weak Hawke with one hand and took out her phone with the other, dialing Hawke's number.

The call was quickly connected.

Anna's voice came from the other end of the line.

"This is Anna..."

"Have your people bring the car over."

  "..."

Anna was silent for a moment on the other end of the line, then reacted and said directly, "Wait a moment, Hawke."

Three minutes later.

A black Chevrolet SUV drove up from the end of the road not far away and stopped in front of Hawke and Gwen.

A man in a black suit got out of the car.

"Hawk, first…"

"The keys."

Hawke interrupted the man in the black suit.

The latter paused, then took out the car keys from his pocket and handed them over.

Hawke took the keys and gave them to Gwen, then, with Gwen's help, moved towards the Chevrolet SUV.

With Gwen's help, Hawke opened the passenger door and prepared to get in.

Then, as if remembering something, he looked at the man in the black suit, who had turned around with his arms crossed in front of him, his attitude very proper: "Oh, right!"

The man in the black suit looked up at Hawke.

"Sir?"

"Natasha and Bruce can die, but not today."

"…Understood, sir."

The man in the black suit paused, then nodded and responded in a deep voice.

Hawke didn't say anything more. With Gwen's help, he got into the passenger seat and leaned back.

Gwen closed the car door and walked towards the driver's side.

As she passed the man in the black suit, she paused and said, "Thank you for the car."

The man in the black suit quickly replied, "You're welcome, it's what we should do."

Gwen looked at the somewhat flustered man in the black suit, blinked, then smiled, thanked him again, and opened the driver's door to get in.

"Hawk, you should be a little nicer, after all, he gave us a car."

"Okay."

Hawk, leaning against the passenger seat and experiencing the unprecedented soreness brought on by his powerful healing abilities, glanced at Gwen and smiled.

"Then help me out of the car, and I'll go and kowtow to him?"

Gwen rolled her eyes at Hawk, ignored him, started the car, turned the Chevrolet SUV around, and drove towards New York City.

"By the way, my car's still there. Hopefully, they won't find us after they wake up."

"My feud with Hulk is over, but if they want to cause us trouble, I don't mind making things worse."

"That woman in the combat suit, she seems to be…"

"Gwen?"

"Yeah."

"Can I rest for a bit? I'm tired."

"…Okay."

The man in the black suit crossed his arms, watched his Chevrolet SUV drive away, then took out his phone and dialed, reporting that Hulk and Gwen had left, and Gwen's last words.

There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line.

After a while…

"Come back. We have a good relationship now. Let's maintain that."

"Yes, sir. What about the car left behind…"

"Don't worry about it. Since he didn't say anything, it means he doesn't care, or he has plans. Don't interfere."

"Roger."

  "…"
