Chapter 768 - Chapter 768 — Unacceptable

-Real World-

"I am obviously a man."

Crocodile said it once. Then again. Then a third time, because important things were worth repeating and the alternative was letting the silence confirm something she had no intention of confirming.

The room had been cleared of men — he had seen to that personally, with the kind of decisive efficiency that had always characterized his approach to problems. The Baroque Works subordinates who had been watching the Sky Screen when the character note appeared were now somewhere else, doing something else, and trying very hard not to think about the implications of what they had just seen.

They were failing.

The discussion was already moving through every level of the organization, faster than any order he could have issued to contain it. Every interaction he had ever had with his cadres was being retrospectively examined. Every slightly ambiguous detail of his appearance, his voice, his habits. The Sky Screen had implanted a question, and now it was doing what questions do when they get loose in a group of people who have nothing better to occupy their attention.

Cobra, sitting in his wheelchair near the window, watched this process unfold with the expression of someone who has found something funny but has the basic decency not to say so aloud. The king was a prisoner. He had adapted. He was developing an anthropologist's detachment about his circumstances, and what he was observing right now was unusual enough to briefly displace his more pressing concerns.

"To be framed by the Sky Screen in this particular way," he said, carefully neutral, "is perhaps a different category of indignity than what you were anticipating."

Crocodile's eye twitched. He poured herself a drink and did not respond.

His mind had moved past the gender question — he was practical before he was vain — and settled on the one that actually mattered: Shukaku.

There was a demon living in the Suna Suna no Mi (Sand-Sand Fruit). he had just watched it broadcast to everyone watching the Sky Screen across the entire world. The Devil Fruit consciousness revelation that had shaken the seas since Nanika had not, until now, applied directly to him. he had told himself that his fruit was different. That the Sand-Sand Fruit was power, not partnership. That he had never noticed any other presence because there was none to notice.

The Sky Screen had spent the last few chapters explaining, in front of a global audience, exactly how wrong she had been.

The Baroque Works he had built. The Kingdom of Arabasta that he was about to inherit. The position he had cultivated across years of careful, patient work — all of it depended on his continued possession of himself. And sitting inside the fruit he had eaten was something that could, on the right bad day, change the allocation of which self that was.

"Has the name Shukaku appeared in any of your historical records?" he asked, keeping his voice level. The question was easier to ask than the one underneath it.

Cobra considered the ceiling briefly. "I haven't encountered it ally. Sand demon — that would be a very old category, possibly predating the current World Government's record-keeping practices." He shifted in the wheelchair. "Nerona Im, however — that name I do know. I found it through a cross-reference of royal genealogies and certain texts the Five Elders have never successfully suppressed completely. One of the Twenty Kings. The records referring to him stop abruptly at the founding of the World Government and do not resume."

He paused. He had spent years on that research. Quiet years, careful years, looking for a thread in a history that had been deliberately tangled. The Sky Screen had presented his conclusion in passing, in the middle of something else entirely, as if it were incidental context.

"I had rather hoped," he said, with the quietness of a man who knows his hope was naive, "that I might be the one to tell someone."

-Real World-

On the Marine HQ observation deck, Sakazuki's hands were turning into lava.

He was not doing this intentionally. The Magu Magu no Mi (Magma-Magma Fruit) had a relationship with his emotional state that had only deepened over the years, and what he was feeling right now was the anger of a man who has just discovered that the ground he was standing on has been hollow for the entire time he was standing on it. The iron railing nearest him was softening along the contact points.

"Houki. Itsumade. Ushioni. The Sandworm. Bakotsu." He named all five forms flatly, not for anyone's benefit but his own — the way a person names things when the naming is the only part of the process they can control. "Power comparable to Mythical Zoan users. All three colors of Haki. And they have been sitting above us — above the Fleet Admiral, above every Admiral — for the entirety of our careers."

What this implied about the power structure he had dedicated his life to serving was something he was not ready to say aloud. The implication was in the room regardless.

If the Celestial Dragons were all operating at the Five Elders' level, the Marine's institutional function would need to be reconsidered from the ground up. The Liberation ability alone — Buggy's invisible splitting force that had turned Conqueror's Haki and centuries-old demon physiology into uniform rubble — had demonstrated that even Admiral-class capability had ceilings that the current era was only now beginning to map.

Houki's roar. The Ushioni's death-gaze that had driven directly through Buggy's Observation Haki. Nasujuro's Bakotsu centaur form and the iced Kitetsu slash. Sakazuki walked through the sequence again and applied himself to it honestly: three of those five hitting simultaneously, and even a Marine Admiral came out seriously injured if they came out at all.

And all five had still been dismantled.

Aramaki had been quiet since the Liberation sequence. His Mori Mori no Mi (Forest-Forest Fruit) was by design a Logia-adjacent power — the kind of ability that the Liberation stage would have separated from its user at the molecular level without asking his opinion. He was experiencing what Sakazuki's expression tended not to permit in himself: visible discomfort with the calculation.

-Real World-

Sengoku sat with Garp and Tsuru, the way the three of them had been sitting through difficult news for longer than most people currently in uniform had been alive.

The Sky Screen's updates had been arriving faster than any single session could comfortably absorb. Nerona Im's real name. The Five Elders' demon forms and their confirmed power ceiling. The Bara Bara no Mi's Liberation stage and what it did to everything in its radius. The Shukaku revelation. Female Crocodile, which was — set aside as a separate category; there was enough else.

"Are they Mythical Zoan users or something else entirely?" Sengoku's voice was careful. He was uncertain, and he was a man who disliked being uncertain. He had spent years developing frameworks for understanding Devil Fruits. The black auspicious clouds wrapping the Five Elders' forms looked exactly like Zoan awakening — the same quality of dense, transformative energy that Mythical Beast types produced when they fully expressed. But the Sky Screen had been deliberate about its "Non-Devil Fruit" designation. "The cloud formation pattern around their bodies when they transformed — that's consistent with advanced Zoan awakening. But the character notes said otherwise."

It was not a question he could resolve from the available information. He filed it.

Garp had not said anything for several minutes. This was unusual enough to register.

"I've wanted to knock that building down for thirty years," he said finally, watching the image of Pangaea Castle in ruins. His voice had a quality that was not quite wistfulness and not quite satisfaction. "Never had a good enough reason that I could use without starting something I wasn't ready to finish."

He paused. The humor drained out of his face.

Luffy was injured and at sea. He had taken damage in Arabasta that the newspapers described as severe and the Sky Screen's subsequent footage confirmed was worse than that. He was alive — Garp was certain of that, in the bone-deep way of someone who has chosen to be certain because the alternative is not functional — but he was not well.

Ace going to Impel Down after Teach capture him. The question of whether a public execution would be ordered was still moving through the institutional decision-making process, and the Admirals had not landed on an answer, and the Im revelation had not clarified anything — if anything, it had added variables to an equation that had already been difficult.

His Marine identity and his family occupied two entirely different positions on the scale, and right now neither side was heavy enough to make the other irrelevant.

"The timing is bad," he said, which was the most accurate thing he could say and the least useful.

Tsuru looked at him without comment. She understood what he meant.
