Chapter 426 - Chapter 426: Medusa

-Hancock's Inner Sanctuary-

Boa Hancock lay suspended in the calm dead water of her mental refuge, allowing herself to rot from within. Her dying consciousness would perish alongside her broken body in the external world. Even if resurrected through forced means, the Empress would be nothing more than a walking corpse—animated flesh without authentic life.

"You're such a pathetic failure!" A cold voice pierced the silence. "You're ready to die after encountering such minor setback?"

The Empress lying in stagnant water suddenly opened her eyes, searching for the figure who'd spoken with such contempt.

Compared to her own ragged slave attire—those tattered rags that had defined her existence for so long—the woman addressing her wore an expensive, high-end cheongsam of exquisite quality. Her figure and facial features were identical to Boa Hancock's in every measurable way.

A mirror. A reflection. A doppelganger.

"Who are you?" Hancock's voice carried confusion beneath exhaustion. "Are you another version of myself?"

Facing the original's questioning, the other Boa Hancock raised the corners of her mouth slightly, revealing a mysterious smile. Her eyes flashed with absolute confidence—the kind of certainty that came from genuine power rather than defensive posturing.

There was unique pride evident in her bearing. This wasn't arrogance born from insecurity, but authentic self-assurance emerging from strength dwelling deep within her core. She possessed no less pride than the Empress had displayed before her catastrophic collapse.

At that moment, this alternative Empress appeared more upright, more genuinely elegant and extraordinary. Her presence exuded invisible charm that inspired involuntary fascination.

"I am you and not you simultaneously," the doppelganger explained with clinical precision. "I originate from the Mero Mero no Mi—the Love-Love Fruit you consumed. We are fundamentally one entity. You exist within me, and I exist within you. No force in this world can separate our merged existence."

The other "me" was actually the Paramecia-type Mero Mero no Mi given consciousness and voice. Boa Hancock—who'd never conceived of such possibilities—displayed surprise and profound doubt across her features. She'd never imagined that one day she would encounter another Boa Hancock within her own mental landscape.

Devil Fruits possess self-awareness.

This revelation impacted the Empress's fundamental worldview with seismic force. As a Shichibukai who'd wielded supernatural power for years, this was the first time she'd learned this horrifying truth. If another consciousness lived inside her body, wouldn't that inevitably impact the original self's autonomy?

"Isn't it somewhat late to feel frightened now?" The other Empress's tone carried cruel amusement. "If you weren't drowning in such pathetic decadence, I would never have gained opportunity to manifest and speak with you directly."

The doppelganger's appearance began transforming before Hancock's horrified gaze. Snake scales formed across her skin one after another—individual plates of keratin emerging like armor. Her waist-length black hair gradually came alive, beginning to sway despite the complete absence of wind within this mental sanctuary.

The Empress experienced terrible premonition, understanding instinctively what would happen next. Boa Hancock no longer concerned herself with Nine Snake Island's fate or the outcome of battles in the physical world. Only one question consumed her curiosity—she hoped desperately that her other self could provide the answer.

"This Love-Love Fruit was force-fed to me by the Celestial Dragons during my enslavement," Hancock spoke slowly, each word weighted with existential significance. "But now circumstances appear far more complex than simple coincidence. Did I choose the fruit? Or did the Mero Mero no Mi choose me?"

The woman's dead eyes blossomed with final desire for knowledge. Perhaps this was humanity's defining characteristic—curiosity as fundamental nature, one of the origins that had led their entire species out of the wilderness into civilization.

The other Empress regarded the original body with calm, measuring gaze. She could have refused to answer, maintaining mysterious silence. But Boa Hancock's personality and physical form had proven extraordinarily compatible with her own nature. Throughout the brief history of human civilization, the Empress was her most satisfactory host—absolutely without question.

"I chose you," the Devil Fruit consciousness stated with finality. "From the precise moment you became a slave to the Celestial Dragons, our fates became inseparably intertwined. Boa Hancock..." Her smile was almost gentle. "I wish you sweet dreams."

Boa Hancock's eyes gradually lost focus as comprehension dawned. She slowly closed her eyes, offering final goodbye to the world and the broken life she'd inhabited. A single crystal tear slid from the corner of her eye—her last concern and attachment to physical existence.

Her face was simultaneously calm and profoundly sad. The tear traced down her cheek, leaving a faint trail like the last mark she would inscribe upon reality. Her lips trembled slightly, as though attempting to articulate something important, but ultimately the effort transformed into a faint sigh.

At that moment, time within the mental sanctuary solidified completely. Everything surrounding her became utterly still and silent—only that single drop of crystalline tear, carrying endless sorrow and deep concern for the world she was abandoning, fell quietly through suspended space.

It descended into stagnant water, creating faint ripples that spread outward before dissipating. The splash seemed to symbolize her departure and final release.

Boa Hancock's inner sanctuary collapsed the next microsecond—the mental architecture dissolving into formless void.

-Physical World-

Marshall D. Teach continued holding the Empress's unconscious body in the external world. Feeling this beautiful woman had lost all awareness, the evil thoughts dwelling in his heart began growing without restraint.

Who made Boa Hancock so exquisitely perfect?

"Why not enjoy ourselves while the opportunity presents itself?" the leftmost head suggested with crude lust.

"I agree completely. I can't restrain myself any longer," the center head responded eagerly.

"She's so delicate and small. Probably can't endure many repetitions," the rightmost head concluded with clinical cruelty.

After Blackbeard's three grotesque faces exchanged these opinions among themselves, his other arms began moving with predatory intent. Boa Hancock's figure became the first target of exploring hands.

Just as Marshall D. Teach was about to force a kiss upon the unconscious Empress—his filthy hand reaching toward her body with vile purpose—the man stopped halfway through the motion.

Not because Blackbeard had experienced moral awakening or sudden conscience. His arm began displaying signs of petrification from inside out—flesh transforming to stone at cellular level.

"The smell of you makes me physically sick."

Boa Hancock slowly opened her eyes, revealing profound indifference and cruelty utterly different from her previous personality. Her gaze was cold as distant stars, inspiring visceral dread. Her originally beautiful face was now covered with layer of metaphorical frost—exuding natural sense of alienation that transcended normal human emotion.

Her body radiated another powerful aura entirely, completely different from human presence. More like a naturally cold-blooded predator, or a demon without capacity for human feelings whatsoever.

The portions of the Sixth Heaven Demon King's body positioned close to the Empress gradually displayed signs of large-scale petrification. Even possessing the Yami Yami no Mi (Dark-Dark Fruit), Blackbeard Marshall D. Teach couldn't offset this horrifying petrification ability.

This was power beyond Devil Fruit mechanics—infinitely approaching the authority of natural law itself.

Blackbeard's petrified limbs proved extremely fragile, shattering piece by piece without requiring external force. The disintegration completely freed Empress Boa Hancock from his grasp. The woman's body floated upward into open air through supernatural means.

The Empress's hair fell across her back like a living waterfall—black and lustrous, sparkling with mysterious otherworldly light. Gentle breeze that shouldn't exist in this ruined landscape blew through the strands, making them flutter as though possessed by independent life force.

Suddenly, every individual strand came alive simultaneously. They began twisting and writhing, transforming into horrifying venomous serpents. The snakes raised their heads and extended forked tongues, bodies coiling and uncoiling while emitting suffocating presence. Their eyes flashed with cold light, as though watching everything surrounding them with predatory intelligence—inspiring primal terror.

These serpents entangled and intertwined with each other, forming a dense nest of living hair that made audiences watching the Sky Screen broadcast recoil in instinctive horror. Their scales flashed with strange iridescence, and they hissed continuously—as though announcing their terrible nature to the entire world.

The scene radiated weirdness and supernatural dread. The transformation overtaking this woman evoked ancient myths and legends—stories of beings who existed between human and monster, mortal and divine.

"This feeling of being alive..." The voice emerging from Hancock's mouth carried unfamiliar timbre—colder, more ancient, utterly inhuman. "I genuinely missed this sensation."

The entity wearing Boa Hancock's face smiled with terrible beauty.
