Chapter 10 - The Powerless Prodigy

The five years old Iruna had sat alone at an empty cafeteria table, watching as his peers chatted amongst themselves in a carefree attitude.

'Are they the same?'

A subtle twitch in his finger had made Iruna realize he wasn't at his old school. This was a new start and he wouldn't let no one take that away from him. In a deep exhale, Iruna calmed his nerves and ate his food at a slow pace.

He noticed the subtle glances passed by his classmates yet remained uninterested, focusing on the layout of the cafeteria. That was until he noticed Kiya Otoski sit down right across from him.

"Hey Iruna. I may not know what's going on but-"

Iruna lifted his pointer finger in an attempt to silence Kiya which was successful. He continued to slowly eat, noticing that everyone was now focused on him and yet, he remained silent.

Iruna's silence gave Kiya the hint that he did not want to be disturbed and so with a sigh, she stood up and walked away. Leaving the cafeteria to continue her school studies in the library. This left everyone murmuring insults about Iruna's cold behavior to the school's goddess.

"Seriously man! what's your problem. She's going out her way to try and befriend you and you're just stomping on-"

The same boy from Iruna's class yelled out in frustration, walking over to where Iruna was sitting and standing across from him. The boy glared daggers at Iruna and yet Iruna remained unfazed, simply staring back impassively.

Though the longer the boy peered into Iruna's eyes, something became more apparent. The long-lost flame of morality snuffed from the heart, the warmth of love and compassion wiped away. The young boy knew he was looking into the eyes of a dangerous individual.

The young boy took a slight step back before steeling his nerves to continue rant until Iruna cut him off.

"I didn't ask her to. I didn't ask no one to do anything for me. I don't need her kindness or yours and i never will."

Iruna stated harshly, taking one more bite of his meal before standing up with the trey and walking away. After tossing his leftovers in the garbage, he left the cafeteria. Leaving the boy and the rest of those who were listening, utterly shocked.

.

"Ugh! This is why I hate boys! though it's something about his eyes that throws me off. They're...so empty"

Kiya exclaimed in a groan, staring at her reflection in the girl's restroom mirror. She subtly shivered upon reminiscing Iruna's eyes and how they lacked any spec of liveliness. it was like he emotionally dead.

"No matter. He doesn't even have supernatural abilities so why should I care."

Kiya proclaimed aloud with an air of confidence, then she left the restroom. Though to her luck, she bumped into someone the moment she stepped out and fell to the ground with a subtle moan of pain.

"Did I run into a wall?"

Kiya asked aloud, finally managing to stand up and look towards the source of her pain. Then her eyes widened in shock upon recognizing who it was.

"My apologies, I should've watched where i was going"

Iruna proclaimed in a dead tone though the intention of his words were clear that he meant what he said. This made Kiya giggle on the inside, realizing that it was a possibility that the way Iruna act was genetics.

"No no, it's fine. I shouldn't have been running out so fast. Anyways, I have to get to-"

Kiya began as she bowed slightly before walking past Iruna who continued to stare forward until she left. The faint sounds of her shoes tracing against the floor.

"Hey Iruna, meet me after school"

Kiya proclaimed as Iruna sighed but nodded at her request, standing there until he knew that Kiya was gone. Then he began walking towards his next class,, pondering on what the school 'goddess' would want with him.

After School...

Iruna leaned against the wall of the academy, shadowed by the large building he leant against. He patiently waited in the silence and calm winds that whistled a small tune.

"Sorry for making you wait, I just got finished up with student council work."

Kiya exclaimed in a cheery tone as she approached Iruna who still had an expressionless face. His face was pale and clean, his hair as white as snow, unkept but clean. His academy uniform seemed to imitate a subtle glow which represented his cleanliness.

"That's fine. What did you need to talk about"

Iruna exclaimed in a tone that did not accept any form of nonsense, earning a sigh from Kiya who figured that Iruna was straightforward.

"Well...I was wondering if...you wanted to go out with me?"

Kiya asked in a stammered tone, her head tilted down in a way to hide her embarrassment but unbeknownst to Iruna, she had a devious smirk on her face that promise untold pain.

Iruna stood shocked for a few seconds, processing the confession that was made to him and from the corner of his eyes he saw two different colored hair's attempting to be kept hidden. This made Iruna wary and as he was about to give his reply, the glint of a scope caught onto the sunlight to produce a subtle reflection had caught Iruna's eyes.

"Hold that thought"

Iruna proclaimed as he stood up and reached forward, latching his hands around Kiya's arm in a gentle but firm grip and pulling her forward into his chest. Iruna's arm wrapped around Kiya's head in a protective manner while holding his free hand up towards the area the glint of the scope came from.

"W-what are you doing?!"

Kiya asked in a daze and stammered tone, her eyes wide in shock with a deep crimson hue over her cheeks. Soon after she asked, her question was answered by a sharp whistling sound. It was subtle but so quick that it produced a high-pitched screeching sound.

"I wish they didn't keep my sword"

Iruna proclaimed in his usual calm and expressionless tone. This statement made Kiya peak her head up and soon she gasped in shock. Iruna's hand was closed in a fist, yet it was dripping a dangerous amount of crimson liquid.

"Y-your hand!'

Kiya stammered out in shock and emergency, immediately pushing from out of Iruna's protective grasp and grabbing onto the wrist of his closed fist. This made Iruna pull back instinctively yet Kiya continued to follow through, a gentle warmth in her eyes that made iruna guard faulter just a bit.

With reluctance, Iruna allowed Kiya to assess the damage to his hand by opening it and revealing the tip of a nine-millimeter bullet.

"Wow princess, someone just tried to end you in broad day."

Iruna proclaimed in a deadpan tone, admiring Kiya's flustered reaction though he did not show it. They simply stared at each other until Iruna did something no one has seen him do in many years.

For the first time since he was five and onward, he smiled a true genuine smile. Though it was faint, a subtle chuckle followed along which made Kiya tilt her head in confusion at the sound.

"Did you just laugh"

Kiya asked with a wide eye expression. From this interaction, a newly odd relationship began to stir.
