Chapter 21 - Chapter-19: Summer Camp Reunion!

After helping Diancie rejuvenate the diamond domain, our heroes continue on their journey to Shalour City, where Ash will face Korrina to earn his third Kalos gym badge. But right now they've diverted their path for a special event.

The sea stretched endlessly before them, glittering under the afternoon sun, waves breaking gently against the sandy shore. Ash and his friends walked down the stone-paved path, taking in the sight of dozens of wooden cabins nestled in a crescent shape around a wide open plaza. Colorful banners fluttered in the breeze, each marked with the symbol of a Kalos starter Pokémon. Trainers bustled everywhere, their laughter and shouts blending with the cries of their Pokémon, the camp alive with energy.

Serena paused at the overlook, resting her hands on the straps of her bag. "It's beautiful here..." she whispered. For a moment, her thoughts drifted back to the darkness of the Allearth Forest, the chilling roar of Yveltal, and the radiant glow of Xerneas. To stand in a place full of such joy and life felt like a blessing after what they had endured.

Bonnie pointed eagerly, nearly toppling over with excitement. "Look, look! There's so many Pokémon here! And cabins, and the beach! Can we go swimming later, Clemont? Please?"

Clemont adjusted his glasses with a little sigh, though his eyes shone with interest. "First we should check in, Bonnie. Summer Camp is carefully structured, there'll be schedules, rules, and activities. It isn't just free play."

"Aw, you're no fun," Bonnie teased, sticking her tongue out.

Ash grinned, his fists pumping with energy. "This is gonna be the best week ever! Battles, training, and making new friends. Pikachu, are you ready?"

"Pika-pi!" Pikachu chirped, leaping onto his shoulder, cheeks sparking faintly in anticipation.

At the entrance tent stood Sophie, clipboard in hand. She waved as soon as she spotted them. "Ash, Serena, Clemont, Bonnie! You made it!" she said warmly. "Professor Sycamore's been expecting you. Welcome to the Pokémon Summer Camp."

Just then, Professor Sycamore himself stepped out from behind the tent flap, his lab coat billowing in the breeze, a wide smile on his face. "I'm so glad you could all come," he greeted. "This camp is a chance for Trainers to bond with their Pokémon, to learn, to grow, and of course..." He gestured toward the rows of cabins where young Trainers were gathered in teams, "...to enjoy some friendly competition."

Sophie pointed to a nearby cabin, its sign carved with the shape of a Froakie. "You'll be staying together in the Froakie Cabin, officially making you Team Froakie."

"That's perfect!" Ash exclaimed. "Froakie, this is your team!" He tossed Froakie's Poké Ball, and the Bubble Frog Pokémon appeared with a croak, blinking curiously at the camp before smiling proudly.

"That's so fitting," Serena said with a smile, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear.

The group followed Sophie past the camp's plaza, where banners fluttered in the sea breeze and Trainers called encouragement to their Pokémon. Sycamore walked alongside them, his usual smile bright, but his curiosity soon won over.

"So," he asked gently, glancing at Serena, "how has your journey been so far? I imagine you've all seen and learned quite a bit since leaving Lumiose."

Serena hesitated a moment, glancing at Ash and Clemont. Then, quietly, she said, "Professor... we've actually been through something... incredible. And a little frightening."

Sycamore tilted his head, the smile softening into concern. "Oh? What do you mean?"

She told him everything, the glittering caverns of the Diamond Domain, the sudden chaos when Yveltal awakened, the forests turned to stone, and the desperate moment when all seemed lost. Sycamore's eyes widened, the color draining from his face.

"You actually encountered Yveltal?!" he blurted, his voice almost trembling. "That's... the Legendary Pokémon of destruction itself! I had heard myths, of course, but to know it truly awakened..." He rubbed his forehead with one hand, shaken. "I can hardly imagine the terror you must have felt."

Serena nodded slowly, her gaze distant. "It was terrifying. Seeing everything... everyone... turned to stone. For a moment, I thought we'd lost everything." Then her face brightened, and she added with warmth, "But in the end, Xerneas appeared. It saved us all. It restored the forest... and even gave Diancie the strength she needed."

Relief washed over Sycamore, his shoulders easing. "Marvelous! Xerneas... the embodiment of life itself. Thank goodness. If not for it..." He trailed off, unwilling to finish the thought, and gave a small, grateful smile. "I'm relieved you all made it through."

Serena's expression shifted again, this time tinged with awe. "But Professor, the most amazing part was Diancie. She... she Mega Evolved. Right there in front of us. And she created her own Mega Stone."

That snapped Sycamore straight out of his daze. He nearly dropped the satchel slung over his shoulder, his eyes wide as if Christmas had come early. "She—she created her own Mega Stone?! Do you have any idea how extraordinary that is?"

Ash grinned. "It was incredible, Professor! The light was so bright, and she became stronger than ever. Diancie's Mega Evolution turned the whole battle around!"

"Marvellous!" Sycamore exclaimed, his earlier worry forgotten as excitement overtook him. He began pacing slightly as he spoke, hands gesturing in eager arcs. "A Pokémon forming its own Mega Stone, it suggests an even deeper relationship between the Pokémon's essence and the energy of Mega Evolution than I ever theorized. If we could understand the process... the mysteries of Mega Evolution might be unraveled further!"

Clemont adjusted his glasses, equally intrigued. "So it's not just about finding a stone in nature... a Pokémon might be able to generate one under the right conditions?"

"Exactly!" Sycamore said, his eyes sparkling. "It could change the way we understand evolution, energy, even the connection between Trainer and Pokémon."

Bonnie tugged at Serena's sleeve with a grin. "See? I told you it was amazing."

Serena blushed faintly but smiled. "It really was. Watching Diancie shine like that... it felt like hope itself."

Sycamore clasped his hands together. "I must document this immediately when I return to Lumiose. Thank you, Serena. You've given me much to think about." His gaze softened again, almost fatherly now. "And I'm proud of you all. To have endured so much and still speak of hope... that shows remarkable strength."

Ash puffed up his chest with determination. "We're just getting started! Team Froakie's gonna show everyone here at camp how strong we've become!"

"Pika-pi!" Pikachu chimed, sparking proudly.

Sycamore chuckled, the mood lightened once more. "I don't doubt it."

[Line Break]

Sophie left them at the Froakie Cabin with a cheerful wave. "Settle in, everyone. Tomorrow morning the real camp activities begin!"

The cabin was cozy, the wooden walls faintly scented with salt from the nearby sea. Two sets of bunk beds lined opposite walls, with a wide window at the back letting in the golden light of the setting sun.

"Top bunk, top bunk!" Bonnie cried, dropping her bag with a thud and scrambling up the ladder before anyone could protest. Serena laughed at her enthusiasm and placed her bag on the other top bed.

"Well, I guess that leaves us the bottom ones," Clemont said, smiling faintly as he adjusted his glasses.

Ash shrugged and tossed his backpack down. "Fine by me! Pikachu likes the bottom bunk better anyway, right buddy?"

"Pika!" Pikachu agreed, already leaping onto the pillow.

As everyone settled in, Clemont leaned back against the bedframe, his thoughtful expression catching Ash and Serena's attention. "You know... this isn't the first time you two ended up at a summer camp together, is it?"

Ash blinked. "Huh? What do you mean?"

Serena tilted her head, curious. "Clemont?"

Clemont smiled knowingly. "You met years ago, didn't you? At Professor Oak's camp. I remember Serena telling me about how Ash helped her when she got hurt."

The memory struck Serena like a spark. She covered her mouth softly, eyes wide, before a gentle smile spread across her face. "That's right... I was lost and scared. And then you showed up, Ash. You gave me your hand."

Ash scratched the back of his head, a little embarrassed. "Oh, yeah... I guess I did. I was just trying to help."

Serena's voice softened, her gaze dropping slightly. "After that, you gave me the tour of Pallet Town. That was... one of my fondest memories. I'll never forget how kind you were back then."

Ash looked at her, really looked, and for once he wasn't flustered or oblivious. His expression was steady, sincere. "Serena... I want to make more memories like that. With you. I want to spend lots of time together."

Serena's breath caught. A faint blush colored her cheeks, and she quickly looked away, fiddling with her braid. "Y-you're so straightforward... But... I'd like that too." Her voice wavered, but her smile was genuine.

Bonnie, sitting cross-legged on her bed, covered her mouth but couldn't stop giggling. "You two are so cute!"

"Bonnie!" Serena squeaked, her blush deepening.

Even Clemont chuckled, adjusting his glasses as if to mask his grin. "Well, I think it's wonderful."

Ash, missing the embarrassment in Serena's voice entirely, turned back toward the siblings with his usual fire. "And not just Serena! We're all going to make amazing memories together! Right, guys?"

He held out his hand, palm open. Pikachu bounded onto his shoulder, sparks of enthusiasm dancing from its cheeks.

Clemont smiled and put his hand on Ash's. Serena hesitated just a moment, still red-faced, then placed her hand too, her touch light but sure. Finally, Bonnie stacked hers on top, grinning ear to ear.

"Together!" Ash shouted.

"Yeah!" the others cheered in unison, their voices ringing through the little cabin.

[Line Break]

From the window, Ash's eyes widened. "Hey, there's a battle going on!"

Everyone crowded beside him, peering out at the field near the cabins. Under the glow of lanterns strung across the campgrounds, a sleek Roselia stood firm, petals shining faintly with green light. Opposite it, a sturdy Marshtomp shifted low in the dirt, its fin twitching like a compass needle.

"Come on, let's check it out!" Ash said, already halfway to the door. The others hurried after him.

By the time they reached the sidelines, the clash had reached its peak.

"Roselia, finish this with Magical Leaf!" the opposing Trainer cried.

Roselia twirled gracefully, unleashing a flurry of glowing leaves that spiraled toward Marshtomp like a storm.

Drew, calm as ever, raised his hand sharply. "Dodge and counter with Muddy Water."

Marshtomp slammed its arms into the dirt, a wave of thick, churning mud erupting upward. The glowing leaves vanished into the torrent, swallowed whole, before the wave surged forward and crashed into Roselia, staggering it back.

"Now— Ice Beam!" Drew commanded.

Marshtomp inhaled deeply, then loosed a frigid blast that raced across the field, freezing the leftover mud into jagged shards as it slammed into Roselia. The Grass-type gasped, encased in frost, and collapsed to its knees.

Roselia's Trainer lifted a trembling hand. "Roselia is unable to battle!"

The referee-in-training at the sidelines raised a flag. "Victory goes to Drew and Marshtomp!"

With the outcome sealed, Drew casually flipped his green hair back with a flick of his hand, not even breaking a sweat. "Hmph. Too easy."

Ash stopped in his tracks, blinking in recognition. "Wait a second... Drew?!"

But he froze mid-step at the sound of the voice he hadn't heard in what felt like forever.

"Ash! Long time no see!"

He turned just in time to see May waving enthusiastically, her long brown hair flowing as she ran toward him. Beside her was Max, now taller and carrying himself with the same confident energy that once overflowed in words rather than deeds.

"May! Max!" Ash exclaimed, his face lighting up with pure joy. Pikachu leapt from his shoulder and scampered forward, squeaking happily at the familiar pair.

May came to a stop, slightly winded but grinning ear to ear. "It's so good to see you again, Ash! I knew we'd cross paths again one day, but wow—at a summer camp like this?!" She unclipped a Poké Ball from her belt and tossed it forward. "Come on out, Blaziken!"

The ball burst open in a flash of light, and towering before them stood her Blaziken, proud and fierce.

"Wow, Blaziken! You keep getting better and better!" Ash's smile broadened, his fists clenching in excitement.

Blaziken crossed its arms with a serious expression, though a flicker of recognition softened its gaze when it glanced at Ash.

Max adjusted his glasses with a triumphant smirk. "That's not all, Ash. I'm not just tagging along anymore! I'm a Trainer now! Look!" He tossed his own Poké Ball forward, and a spry Treecko landed before him with a confident gleam in its eye.

Ash blinked, stunned. "Treecko?!"

"That's right," Max said proudly, folding his arms much like his Pokémon. "I finally started my journey, and I'm going to follow in your footsteps. One day, I'm going to surpass you and be the one to defeat you in a battle!"

Ash grinned ear to ear, hunching forward slightly to meet Max's determined eyes. "That's the spirit, Max! I can't wait to see how strong you and Treecko become. But don't think I'm going to go easy on you just because we're friends!"

Pikachu let out an encouraging cheer, sparking playfully as if to second Ash's words.

May giggled at the fiery exchange, then turned her attention toward Serena, Clemont, and Bonnie. "And you must be Ash's new friends! It's so nice to meet you all! I'm May, and this is my little brother, Max."

Serena stepped forward politely, giving a small wave. "It's nice to meet you, May. Ash has told us a little about his travels in Hoenn before. You must have had so many amazing adventures together."

May smiled brightly. "We really did! Ash helped me so much when I was just starting out as a Coordinator. I don't think I'd have come this far without him."

Serena's smile faltered for a split second, a faint blush dusting her cheeks. Hearing May speak so fondly of Ash tugged at her chest. Still, she quickly straightened and replied, "That... that sounds wonderful. Ash has been a big help to me too."

Ash blinked between them, not catching the subtle shift in Serena's tone at all. He just grinned proudly. "Yeah, May's always been a great partner in battles. We learned a lot from each other!"

Bonnie practically bounced up, eyes shining. "Wow, Ash, you really do know people everywhere! May, you're so pretty! And Max, you're already starting out as a Trainer now? That's so cool!"

Max chuckled, puffing his chest. "That's right! I'm going to be a serious Trainer now. You'll see! I'll make my mark just like Ash did."

Max crouched proudly as his Treecko struck a cool pose again, flicking its tail with confidence. Just then, Bonnie's Poké Ball popped open, and Chespin bounded out. It mimicked Treecko's stance clumsily, crossing its stubby arms and trying to look tough—only to stumble and land flat on its face.

"Chespin!" Bonnie gasped, scooping it up, but then she and the Pokémon both burst into giggles. The others followed suit, laughter bubbling through the group.

Bonnie beamed. "Even though I'm not a Trainer yet, Chespin is my starter Pokémon! Big brother is looking after it for now, but just wait! Once I'm old enough, Chespin and I are going to be an amazing team!"

Clemont adjusted his glasses, watching the cheerful exchange. But then, with a sudden mischievous spark in his eyes, he strode toward Max. Dropping dramatically onto one knee, he cleared his throat.

"Max! You're a keeper!" he began solemnly, "Won't you please take care of my little sister?"

Max blinked owlishly, not understanding what was going on. "Keeper? Take care?"

"Brother!!" Bonnie shrieked, turning scarlet.

Undeterred, Clemont pressed on in his overly formal tone. "You see, my sister really loves Pokémon, but she can also be a little irresponsible at times. So I want to find her a strong and dependable husband who can keep up with her wild ideas sometimes."

Max froze, eyes wide as Treecko nearly toppled backward in surprise. "W-What?! M-Me?!" He pushed his glasses up with trembling hands, his face flaming red.

May blinked in confusion, leaning toward Drew. "Uh... what's happening right now?"

Drew shrugged, flicking his hair with mild disinterest. "Beats me."

Ash and Serena, however, were both chuckling knowingly.

Serena covered her mouth to hide her giggle. "Don't worry, May. It's just something Bonnie does a lot. She's always asking people to marry her brother."

Ash grinned. "Yeah, Clemont's just turning the tables on her this time!"

Bonnie stomped her foot furiously, still bright red. "Stop it, Clemont! That's not fair! Chespin use Vine Whip!"

"Ah I hope you'll think about it Max." Clemont stated in a sing song voice while he was being comically dragged off by Chespin.

Max was still fumbling for words, his glasses fogging up from the embarrassment. "I-I didn't agree to anything!!"

Chespin and Treecko exchanged a glance and both started laughing at their Trainers, which only added to the chaos.

[Line Break]

Not far from the cabins, a trio of "chefs" were struggling with an overloaded cart stacked with pots, pans, and crates of fresh ingredients. Jessie huffed, nearly losing her balance. "Ugh, why do we have to haul all this junk? We're supposed to be the brains of the kitchen, not the brawn!"

James, sweating under his chef's hat, leaned against the cart. "Because, Jess, we're undercover! The perfect disguise to scope out the twerps."

Meowth peeked out from a sack of potatoes, his whiskers twitching with excitement. "And would ya look at that—our favorite twerp and his Pikachu are here too! Talk about a stroke of luck."

Jessie's eyes gleamed, and she tossed back her magenta hair dramatically. "Forget luck—this is destiny! After all these failures, this camp is the perfect place to finally snatch Pikachu once and for all!"

James clasped his hands dreamily. "The Boss will be so pleased... and so generous with rewards..."

Before Jessie could spin into a full-on monologue about their glorious future, a sharp, stern voice cracked through the air like a whip.

"YOU THREE!"

The trio jumped, nearly toppling the cart.

Standing there with her arms folded was a silver-haired woman in a neat uniform and glasses, her gaze piercing enough to cut steel. Madame Catherine, the camp's custodian, tapped her foot impatiently.

"What do you think you're doing, standing around whispering like gossiping schoolchildren?" she barked. "These supplies aren't going to cook themselves! Back to the kitchen, at once!"

Jessie scrambled upright, sweating. "O-Of course, Madame Catherine! Just, uh... making sure the potatoes were properly ventilated!"

James stammered, "And the, er, seasoning ratio was optimal!"

Meowth groaned. "We was just talkin', lady!"

Madame Catherine narrowed her eyes, the weight of her glare enough to send chills down their spines. "Talking doesn't feed hungry campers. Move it!"

With no choice, Team Rocket sighed in unison and trudged back toward the kitchen, cart squeaking under its load.

Jessie muttered under her breath, "This is humiliating..."

James adjusted his hat gloomily. "We're supposed to be thieves, not dishwashers."

Meowth smirked with determination. "Eh, let her boss us around for now. When the time's right, Pikachu's ours. This camp won't know what hit it!"

[Line Break]

The sound of a whistle cut through the chatter of Trainers and Pokémon gathered at the central pavilion. All eyes turned to see Professor Sycamore standing on a small stage, his lab coat catching the sea breeze. With him were Sophie holding a clipboard, Madame Catherine with her stern expression, and the trio of "chefs" nervously balancing trays of fruit and water.

"Welcome, everyone, to the Pokémon Summer Camp!" Sycamore began warmly, his voice carrying easily over the crowd. "Over the next week, you'll train, compete, and most importantly, learn to strengthen the bonds between you and your Pokémon."

A cheer went up from the campers, with Pikachu sparking happily on Ash's shoulder.

Sycamore gestured toward the silver-haired woman beside him. "I'd like to introduce Madame Catherine, the camp's custodian. She has been watching over this camp for many years."

Madame Catherine gave a curt nod, her glasses flashing in the sunlight. "This camp has hosted many talented Trainers," she said, her voice steady and commanding. "But talent alone isn't what matters here. Discipline, teamwork, and respect for your Pokémon will determine your success." She paused, her eyes sweeping across the crowd with sharp precision. "Even Kalos Champion Diantha once attended this camp as a girl. Her hard work and determination earned her a place in the Hall of Fame here. Let her be your inspiration."

Gasps and murmurs spread like wildfire. "Diantha? Really?!" Serena whispered to Ash, her eyes wide.

Ash clenched his fists, excitement burning in his eyes. "If Diantha did it, then we can too!"

Bonnie tugged at Clemont's sleeve. "Hey, Clemont, you think we'll make the Hall of Fame too?"

Clemont chuckled nervously, adjusting his glasses. "Well, that depends on how well we do in the activities."

Off to the side, the "chefs" bowed stiffly as Sycamore waved toward them. "And of course, we're grateful to our kitchen staff, who'll keep us all well-fed during this busy week."

Jessie, James, and Meowth forced polite smiles, balancing their trays with exaggerated cheer. "Pleasure to serve," Jessie muttered through clenched teeth.

"Now then," Sycamore continued, raising his hand. "The camp is organized into cabins, each named after a starter Pokémon. Throughout the week, you'll earn points for your cabins through activities, challenges, and battles. At the end, the cabin with the most points will be awarded a special honor."

Excited chatter broke out, Trainers looking at one another eagerly.

"And with that," Sycamore declared, clapping his hands together, "let's begin with our first activity: one-on-one battles! This is a chance for you to test your skills, get to know your fellow Trainers, and most importantly, have fun!"

The crowd erupted into cheers, Trainers already turning to size up possible opponents. Ash's eyes shone with anticipation. "Alright! Now this is my kind of camp!"

[Line Break]

Max grinned as Treecko leapt into the arena, eyes sharp with determination. "This is my chance, Ash!"

Ash adjusted his cap, smiling. "Let's give it our best, Froakie!"

Treecko darted forward with Quick Attack, but Froakie slipped aside, countering with a swift Bubble that burst against Treecko's chest. Max urged Treecko on, and it retaliated with Pound, striking Froakie back a step.

"Hang in there, Froakie! Use Water Pulse!" Ash called. Froakie formed a shimmering orb and launched it, striking Treecko head-on. Treecko staggered, tried to recover, but collapsed, fainted.

Max returned Treecko with a sigh, then smiled. "I'll keep training! One day, I'll beat you, Ash—at the Kalos League!"

Serena nervously clutched her Poké Ball, but May gave her a warm smile. "Don't worry—just have fun. Let's battle, contest-style!"

Blaziken opened with Flamethrower, spiraling the flames upward before sending them down in a dazzling arc. Serena gasped, then ordered Braixen to respond with Psybeam, splitting the fiery stream into glittering shards of light. The crowd murmured at the spectacle.

"Now, Braixen—Flamethrower!" Serena called, her voice steadier. Braixen's flames danced across the field, clashing beautifully with Blaziken's fiery strikes. Finally, Blaziken dashed in with a decisive Sky Uppercut, knocking Braixen back and ending the battle.

Serena rushed to her partner's side, smiling despite the loss. May approached, helping her up. "You've got real talent, Serena. With more confidence, you'll shine."

Serena's eyes lit up, admiration in her voice. "Thank you, May! I want to learn from you!"

Clemont adjusted his glasses. "Let's do our best, Chespin!"

Before the match could start, Bonnie's Chespin bounded forward, puffing out its chest. "Chespin! Chespin!"

Bonnie beamed. "Looks like my Chespin wants in!"

Marshtomp wasted no time, firing Mud Shot. Chespin tried to counter with Vine Whip, but the mud smothered the vines, sending Chespin tumbling. Shaking off dirt, Chespin launched Pin Missile, sparks spraying everywhere, but Marshtomp calmly dodged and struck with Water Gun, knocking Chespin onto its back.

The referee called it. Marshtomp victorious.

Drew flicked his hair. "If you want to win, you'll need a lot more polish than that."

Bonnie huffed, scooping up her Pokémon. "Don't listen to him, Chespin. We'll get stronger together!"

[Line Break]

That night, after the day's battles and laughter had wound down, the camp settled into a calm silence. The moonlight shimmered across the gentle waves by the dock, where Serena sat with Braixen, her brush sweeping gently through the fox's tail fur.

From the cabin windows behind her, soft golden light spilled out. Ash, May, Max, Clemont, and Bonnie were still awake, their voices carrying faintly across the water—Ash's enthusiastic laugh ringing above the rest. Serena smiled faintly at the sound, but there was a shadow in her eyes.

She lowered her gaze to the rippling water. "I... I still don't know what my dream is," she admitted softly, her voice almost carried away by the night air. "Ash, May, even Max, they all know where they're headed. But me..."

Braixen turned, eyes warm and reassuring. The Pokémon leaned closer, nuzzling Serena's cheek with quiet affection.

Serena let out a breath, her lips curving into a small smile. She placed a hand on Braixen's fur.

"Thank you. I'll keep searching," she whispered, her reflection shimmering on the water alongside Braixen's. She lifted her chin, watching the stars overhead. "One day, I'll shine just like them."

Braixen twirled the stick in its tail, sparks of fire briefly lighting the night before fading into embers that drifted away on the breeze. Serena's eyes followed them, hope flickering in her heart.
