The inn's common room was packed that evening. Players crowded around tables, voices low and tense as they discussed the day's events. The atmosphere had shifted from the previous nights less panic, but more paranoia. Everyone kept glancing at each other with suspicion, wondering who might be a threat.
Sanji, Yuki, and Akane found a corner table away from the main crowd. As they ate their dinner a surprisingly good stew with fresh bread they couldn't help but overhear fragments of nearby conversations.
"...heard that three more players died in the northern forest..."
"...not just monsters anymore. Players are forming kill squads..."
"...Red Talon guild is offering protection, but they take half your loot..."
"...someone found a dungeon entrance. Level ten recommended..."
That last bit caught Sanji's attention. He leaned toward the table where two warriors were speaking quietly.
"Excuse me," he said. "Did you say someone found a dungeon?"
The warriors looked up, wary at first, but relaxed slightly when they saw Sanji's party was small and non-threatening. The taller one, a man named Daichi according to his name tag, nodded.
"Yeah. About three miles east of here, there's a cave system. The entrance has glowing runes and a level requirement notice says level ten minimum recommended. Nobody's tried going in yet. Too risky."
"Level ten," Yuki muttered. "We're only six. That's a significant gap."
"Four levels," Sanji said thoughtfully. "Achievable in a few days if we grind efficiently. And dungeons usually have better loot than open-world hunting."
Akane was looking at her equipment still mostly basic gear despite being level four. "We definitely need better equipment. These starter items won't cut it much longer."
After thanking Daichi for the information, they returned to their planning. Sanji pulled out his map and marked the approximate location of the dungeon based on the warrior's description.
"Here's my thinking," he said, keeping his voice low. "We spend tomorrow and the next day power-leveling. We hit the Deep Forest zone hard, take calculated risks, and get to level eight or nine. Then we attempt the dungeon as a three-person party."
"Most dungeons are designed for five-person groups," Yuki pointed out. "Going in with three might be suicide."
"Or it might give us an advantage. Smaller party means more experience and loot per person. And we work well together better than most pickup groups."
Yuki considered this, then slowly nodded. "Your Game Master's Eye will be crucial for navigating dungeon mechanics. If you can spot traps, hidden passages, and boss weaknesses, we might actually pull this off."
"What about player-killers?" Akane asked, her voice small. "After what we saw today... what if we run into another group like that?"
"We avoid them if possible," Sanji said. "We stay alert, we don't fight unless necessary, and we never ever let our guard down around strangers."
It was a grim reality, but necessary. The world of Alkhali had shown its true colors today. Trust was now the rarest commodity.
They finished their meal in relative silence, each lost in thought. Sanji distributed his new stat points from reaching level six two to Intelligence, two to Wisdom, and one to Agility. His balanced approach was serving him well so far.
As they were preparing to head to their rooms, a commotion near the inn's entrance drew their attention. A group of players burst through the door, supporting a wounded companion between them. The injured player was bleeding heavily his HP bar visible to everyone showed a dangerous 12/200.
"Healer!" one of them shouted. "We need a healer!"
Players with healing abilities rushed forward, but Sanji noticed something that made his blood run cold. The wounded player's injuries weren't from monster attacks. The slash across his chest was clean, precise the kind of wound made by another player's sword.
"What happened?" someone in the crowd asked.
"We were jumped," the leader of the group spat, a woman with short black hair and fierce eyes. Her name tag read Hana - Level 7. "A guild calling themselves the Crimson Fangs. They're claiming the eastern forest as their territory, demanding tribute from anyone who wants to hunt there."
Murmurs of anger rippled through the common room.
"They can't do that," someone protested. "The forest is open to everyone!"
"Try telling them that," Hana said bitterly. "They've got at least twenty members, all level six or higher. Their leader is some guy named Ryoga, level eight. They surrounded us, demanded half our loot. When we refused, they attacked. We barely got away."
Sanji exchanged glances with Yuki. This was escalating faster than expected. Organized guild warfare, territorial claims, forced tribute the darker aspects of human nature were manifesting with frightening speed.
"We need to do something," Akane whispered. "This isn't right."
"Like what?" Yuki asked pragmatically. "We're three people. They're twenty. Mathematics doesn't care about morality."
"But if we don't stand up to them, it'll just get worse. Next it'll be the western forest, then the northern areas. Eventually, smaller players won't be able to hunt anywhere without paying protection money."
Sanji hated to admit it, but Yuki was right. They couldn't take on an entire guild alone. But Akane was also right something needed to be done.
Before he could voice his thoughts, another figure stepped forward from the crowd. It was Ryota, the silver-haired warrior who'd been recruiting for his Silver Fang guild. He'd reached level seven now, his equipment noticeably upgraded with what looked like rare-quality armor.
"This is exactly why I've been advocating for organization," Ryota addressed the room, his voice carrying authority. "The Crimson Fangs are exploiting the chaos because we're scattered and weak individually. But together, as a unified guild, we could stand against them."
Some players nodded in agreement. Others looked skeptical.
"Join the Silver Fang guild," Ryota continued. "We're already fifty members strong. We protect our own, we share resources fairly, and we don't tolerate player-killing or extortion. Together, we can make Alkhali World safer for everyone."
It was a good speech, delivered with genuine passion. Sanji found himself almost convinced. Almost.
But his Game Master's Eye was picking up something. When he focused on Ryota, he saw the faintest shimmer around the man the same shimmer that indicated hidden information. His skill was trying to tell him something.
He concentrated harder, pushing the ability to reveal what it was sensing.
Player: Ryota - Level 7
Hidden Status: Guild Leader with Secret Objective
Warning: Motivations may not align with stated goals
Sanji's eyes narrowed. So Ryota had an agenda beyond simple protection and cooperation. That didn't necessarily mean he was evil everyone had personal goals but it was worth noting.
"We should keep our independence," Yuki murmured, reading Sanji's expression. "At least for now."
"Agreed," Sanji said quietly.
They slipped away from the common room as Ryota continued his recruitment speech. Their rooms were on the second floor, arranged consecutively. Before they separated for the night, Sanji stopped them.
"New rule," he said. "We never split up in dangerous zones. We stay together, we watch each other's backs, and we trust no one outside this party. Agreed?"
"Agreed," Yuki said immediately.
"Agreed," Akane echoed.
Sanji entered his room and locked the door a feature he'd noticed earlier and appreciated. The room was small but secure, with a single window that overlooked the village street below. He sat on the bed and opened his status window, reviewing his progress.

He was making progress, but it wasn't enough. Level six was decent, but there were already level eights out there, and organized guilds with superior numbers and equipment. He needed to accelerate his growth.
Tomorrow, they would push hard. No more playing it safe with easy monsters. It was time to take risks.
A soft knock on his door startled him from his thoughts. He tensed, hand moving to his sword paranoia was becoming second nature before a familiar voice called out.
"Sanji? It's Yuki. Can we talk?"
He opened the door. Yuki stood there, looking uncharacteristically uncertain.
"Something wrong?" he asked.
"Can I come in? I don't want this conversation to be public."
Sanji hesitated for only a moment before stepping aside. Yuki entered, and he left the door slightly ajar impropriety might not matter much in a death game, but habits died hard.
Yuki paced for a moment before speaking. "I need to tell you something. About why I'm really here, in Alkhali World."
That caught his attention. "Okay."
"In the real world, my younger brother is sick. Genetic condition, terminal. The doctors gave him six months, maybe a year." Her voice was steady, but her eyes glistened. "When I got selected for the Alkhali World beta, I almost didn't participate. I wanted to spend time with him. But he insisted. He said someone should get to live in a world with magic and adventure, even if he couldn't."
Sanji felt his chest tighten. "Yuki..."
"When we got trapped here, my first thought wasn't about myself. It was about him. He's home alone, probably terrified because I won't wake up. And if I die here, he'll have to watch me die too, on top of everything else he's going through."
"That's why you're so focused on survival," Sanji realized. "It's not just about you."
"I need to get back to him," Yuki said fiercely. "I need to find a way out of this world, whatever it takes. And I think you're the key to doing that."
"Me?"
"Your Game Master's Eye skill isn't just for finding hidden items and weak points. It sees the underlying structure of this world. If anyone's going to find the truth about why we're trapped and how to escape, it's going to be you."
Sanji absorbed this. The responsibility felt heavy, but he understood her desperation.
"I'll do everything I can," he promised. "We'll find a way out. For your brother. For everyone."
Yuki nodded, seeming to regain her composure. "Thank you. I just... I needed you to know. To understand why I sometimes push so hard for efficiency and risk management. It's not because I'm cold. It's because I don't have the luxury of dying here."
"None of us do," Sanji said gently. "But I get it. Your reason is more immediate, more personal. We'll keep that in mind."
After Yuki left, Sanji lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. The weight of expectation had just increased. People were counting on him not just his party members, but potentially everyone trapped in this world.
His Game Master's Eye ability was more important than he'd initially realized. It wasn't just a convenience feature for finding secrets. It was a window into the fundamental nature of Alkhali World.
And if this world had been designed, if it had rules and structure, then it could be understood. Analyzed. Exploited.
And eventually, beaten.
Tomorrow, the real work would begin. Tomorrow, they would push themselves harder than ever. Tomorrow, they would start the climb from good players to exceptional ones.
Because somewhere out there, beyond the forests and dungeons and player conflicts, was an answer. A way home. And Sanji intended to find it.
To be continued...
