The silence that followed the Whisperer King's death was profound. Twelve players stood in the throne room, breathing hard, some crying, others simply staring at the space where the boss had been.
"We did it," Koji said, his voice hoarse. "We actually did it."
Hana sank to her knees, exhaustion finally catching up. "Hiroshi and Daichi. We need to remember them. They made this victory possible."
The raid held a moment of silence. Sanji felt the weight of those two lives people he'd fought beside, however briefly. In the real world, their bodies were probably being discovered by family members. Two more victims of Alkhali World.
"They'll be remembered," Sanji said quietly. "Their names will be spoken when we tell the story of how independent players cleared the first dungeon."
"Assuming the Crimson Fangs don't kill us and claim credit," one of the mages muttered bitterly.
"They can try," Takeshi said, gripping his sword. "But we have proof. We have witnesses. And more importantly, we have the loot."
All eyes turned to the massive treasure chest. It was ornate, carved from black stone with gold inlays, and pulsed with magical energy that made the air shimmer around it.
"Who opens it?" Mei asked.
"Sanji," Hana said without hesitation. "His scouting made this possible. He gets first honors."
Sanji approached the chest carefully, his Game Master's Eye scanning for traps. But there were none just pure, concentrated reward. He placed his hands on the lid and pushed it open.
The light that burst forth was blinding. When it faded, the contents were revealed, and several people gasped.
Inside lay treasures beyond anything they'd seen in Alkhali World:
Legendary Staff of the Frozen Abyss - Increases ice magic damage by 50%, reduces MP cost by 30%, grants skill: Absolute Zero
Legendary Sword of the Truthseeker - Reveals hidden truths, increases critical hit rate by 40%, grants skill: Reality Slash
Epic Armor Set of the Depths Guardian (5 pieces) - Massive defense boost, water breathing, resistance to psychic damage
Rare Skill Books x6 - Various advanced abilities
Ancient Coins x500 - Special currency for hidden vendors
Dungeon Core Fragment - Unknown purpose, radiates strange energy
And at the very bottom, something that made Sanji's breath catch: a small crystal orb that his Game Master's Eye identified as:
World Tree Access Token - Grants entry to the restricted zone of the World Tree. Single use.
"That's... that's insane loot," Yuki whispered, staring at the staff. Her eyes were fixed on it with barely concealed desire.
"Distribution time," Hana said, taking charge. "Standard raid rules: major contributors get first pick of legendary items. Everyone contributed, but Sanji's scouting, Yuki's Blizzard, and Koji's frontline work were crucial to success. They get first picks."
No one argued. It was fair.
"Yuki, the staff is yours," Sanji said immediately. "That Blizzard saved the raid."
Yuki's hands trembled as she lifted the legendary staff. The moment she touched it, knowledge flooded her mind new spells, advanced techniques, mastery of ice magic beyond anything she'd imagined. Her status window updated:
New Skill Acquired: Absolute Zero - Freeze enemies solid for 5 seconds, 150 MP cost
"This is incredible," she breathed. "I can feel the power."
"Koji, you should take the armor set," Hana suggested. "You're our best tank, and that psychic resistance will be crucial going forward."
Koji equipped the armor pieces, and his appearance transformed. The deep blue armor gleamed with aquatic motifs, making him look like a guardian of some underwater kingdom. His defense stat nearly doubled.
"Sanji, the sword is yours," Hana said. "It synergizes with your Game Master's Eye perfectly."
Sanji lifted the Legendary Sword of the Truthseeker. It was lighter than his steel longsword but felt more substantial somehow, as if it carried weight beyond physical. The moment he gripped the handle, his Game Master's Eye activated automatically, and the world exploded with information.
He could see hidden paths throughout the throne room. Secret doors in the walls. Concealed messages written in invisible ink on the ceiling. And when he focused on his party members, he could see their true emotional states, their deepest fears and hopes laid bare.
It was overwhelming. He quickly closed the enhanced perception, gasping.
"You okay?" Akane asked, concerned.
"Yeah, just... the sword amplifies my ability. I need to learn to control it."
New Skill Acquired: Reality Slash - Cut through illusions, barriers, and magical defenses, 50 MP cost
The remaining items were distributed among the raid. Akane received a rare bow with enhanced critical rate. Takeshi got a shield that absorbed magic damage. Mei was gifted a skill book that taught advanced healing techniques. Everyone received Ancient Coins and at least one skill book.
Sanji quietly pocketed the World Tree Access Token without mentioning it. The Whisperer King's message had been meant for him specifically a warning and an invitation. He would investigate the World Tree, but carefully, and probably with only his closest allies.
The Dungeon Core Fragment was more puzzling. His Game Master's Eye showed that it was important but couldn't determine its exact purpose. He decided to keep it for research.
"We should head back," Hana said once distribution was complete. "It's been almost twelve hours since we entered. People in the village will assume we're dead."
The journey back through the dungeon was surreal. The monsters didn't respawn apparently, clearing the final boss had pacified the entire instance. They walked through empty chambers that had been deadly battlegrounds hours earlier.
When they finally emerged into daylight, the sun was setting, painting the sky in shades of orange and red. Fresh air had never tasted so sweet.
"Look," Akane pointed.
A crowd had gathered at the dungeon entrance. At least fifty players, maybe more. Many wore the red armbands of the Crimson Fangs.
At the front of the crowd stood Ryoga, the guild leader, arms crossed and expression unreadable.
"Here we go," Takeshi muttered, hand moving to his weapon.
The crowd parted as Sanji's raid approached. Whispers followed them looks of awe, respect, and in some cases, jealousy.
Ryoga stepped forward. "I assume by your survival that the dungeon is cleared?"
"It is," Hana said, her voice firm. "The Whispering Depths has been conquered by the Free Blades coalition. We defeated a level twelve elite boss and claimed the legendary treasures within."
"Impressive," Ryoga said, and he actually sounded sincere. "We were prepared to raid it tomorrow. You've saved us the trouble."
"And denied you the loot," Koji added with an edge to his voice.
Ryoga's expression hardened slightly. "That too. Tell me, did you find anything... unusual inside? Information? Messages? Things that seemed out of place in a normal dungeon?"
Sanji kept his face neutral, but his mind raced. Ryoga was fishing for something specific. Did he know about the Whisperer King's true nature? About the messages hidden in the dungeon?
"Just standard dungeon content," Sanji lied smoothly. "Monsters, traps, bosses. Nothing unusual."
Ryoga studied him for a long moment, and Sanji felt like those cold eyes were seeing right through him. But finally, the guild leader nodded.
"I see. Well, congratulations on your success. The Crimson Fangs acknowledge your achievement." He stepped aside, gesturing toward the path back to the village. "You must be exhausted. We won't keep you."
It was almost cordial. Too cordial. Sanji didn't trust it for a second.
As they walked past the Crimson Fang contingent, Sanji's enhanced perception picked up fragments of whispered conversations:
"...level eleven already..."
"...legendary weapons..."
"...Ryoga wants them recruited or eliminated..."
"...World Tree expedition..."
That last fragment made Sanji's blood run cold. The Crimson Fangs knew about the World Tree. They were planning something.
The walk back to Hajimari Village took an hour. By the time they arrived, word had already spread. Players lined the streets, cheering, celebrating. The Free Blades had proven that independent players could achieve what seemed impossible.
But Sanji felt no triumph. Only growing unease.
At the inn, the raid finally disbanded. Emotional farewells, promises to stay in contact, and plans to share information going forward. Hana pulled Sanji aside before leaving.
"You're holding something back," she said quietly. "I could see it when Ryoga asked about unusual things in the dungeon."
Sanji hesitated, then made a decision. Hana had proven herself trustworthy. "The Whisperer King left a message. Something about the World Tree and dangerous truths. I have a token that grants access to a restricted zone there."
Hana's eyes widened. "The World Tree... that's the legendary hundred-floor tower dungeon. No one's even found the entrance yet, let alone attempted it."
"I think I can find it. With my Game Master's Eye and this token."
"Don't go alone," Hana said firmly. "Whatever's there, it's beyond a solo player's capability. Take your party at minimum. Better yet, take a full raid."
"I'll be careful," Sanji promised. "But I need to understand what that former player was trying to tell me. There are answers at the World Tree. About why we're trapped here, about the Administrators, about everything."
"Just... don't end up like the Whisperer King. Don't look so deep that you lose yourself."
It was good advice. Sanji intended to follow it.
After Hana left, Sanji's party gathered in his room. They were alone now, could speak freely.
"You felt it too, right?" Yuki asked. "Something about that boss fight was different. The way it talked, the way it died... that wasn't normal game mechanics."
"It was a player," Sanji confirmed. "Someone who came before us and was transformed. And before it died, it left me a message about the World Tree."
He showed them the access token. Through the Party Link, he felt their complex reactions—fear, curiosity, determination.
"We're going, aren't we?" Akane said. It wasn't really a question.
"Eventually," Sanji said. "But not yet. We're level eleven now, strong, but not strong enough. The World Tree is a hundred floors. The final boss there is probably level twenty or higher. We need more preparation."
"How much time do we have?" Takeshi asked. "Before the Crimson Fangs or someone else finds it?"
"I don't know. But I overheard them talking. They're planning a World Tree expedition. We need to move fast, but smart."
"Then we grind," Yuki said. "We push to level fifteen, maybe twenty. We gather the best equipment we can find. We learn every skill, master every tactic. And then we attempt the tower."
"Agreed," Sanji said. "We've proven we can punch above our weight. Now we need to become genuinely powerful."
They spent another hour planning before exhaustion finally forced them to rest. As Sanji lay in bed, his new legendary sword propped against the wall, he thought about the path ahead.
The dungeon had been a test. They'd passed.
But the real challenge was still coming. The World Tree awaited, and with it, the truth about Alkhali World.
For better or worse, Sanji was committed now. He would climb that tower. He would find the answers. And he would find a way home. No matter what it cost.
To be continued...
