Cane's POV
*An hour earlier*
My uniform was on. Black suit, black shirt. It's like my armor. Makes people straighten up. I was heading out to see this "Selene" woman. She might be saying she's not, but my gut was screaming it's Stephanie. You don't just find two people with the same face. It doesn't happen. She ghosts me for five whole years and now she pops up like this?
Yeah, right. She's playing a game. My plan was simple: keep her real close and figure out what she's really after.
My hand was on the fancy front door handle when a little voice yelled out.
"Dad! Hold up!"
I turned around. There was Josh, standing there in his little jacket, all ready for the world.
"Where are you trying to go?" I asked him, though I already knew the answer.
"I'm coming with you," he said, like it was already decided. "I need real food. My stomach is talking to me."
I raised an eyebrow. "Armstrong made you that mac and cheese you begged for all week."
