Chapter 121 - The children are gone

"Both?" Josh whispered, like it was too good to be true.

"Both?" Jolina echoed.

"Both," Cane said firmly. He nodded. "We'll make a mini pie and some shortcakes when we get home. We have enough berries for an army."

He looked at me. "If the boss agrees to the extra mess in her kitchen."

"The boss agrees," I said, smiling. I couldn't help it. The picture in my head—flour everywhere, sticky counters, all of us in the kitchen together—it was perfect. "But you're on baking duty, mister. I've seen your cooking skills. The pancakes were... an experience."

He put a hand over his heart, pretending to be deeply wounded. "You loved my pancakes! You said they were good!"

"They were... creative," I said carefully, which made both kids burst out laughing.

"They were weird shapes, Daddy!" Jolina said.

"One looked like a frog!" Josh added.

Cane shook his head, trying to look sad, but he was laughing too. "My own family. Betrayed by my own strawberry-stained children."
