Rain hammered against the ruined checkpoint while the firefight intensified around them.
The industrial yard barely even looked real anymore.
Smoke rolled through the darkness in thick waves. Fire burned through shattered vehicles and collapsed cargo stacks while flashing emergency lights painted everything in violent shades of red and white.
And somehow—
They were still alive.
Barely.
Aiden pushed himself back upright beside the damaged convoy truck, shoulder throbbing painfully from where he'd slammed against the concrete earlier. The little girl inside the truck was still crying quietly while Vinny tried forcing the jammed rear door open.
"It's stuck!" Vinny shouted over the chaos.
"I KNOW IT'S STUCK!"
Bullets cracked overhead again.
One slammed into the truck frame inches from Aiden's head.
Aiden immediately ducked lower. "Okay I'm genuinely starting to feel targeted!"
