Chapter 31 - 31

Ethan's movements were faster than anyone could follow. When he leaped from the shattered windowsill, he rolled cleanly on the ground, his hand sweeping up the rifle lying nearest to him.

It was a M4A1 carbine, firing 5.56mm rounds—small caliber, but with high accuracy, solid penetration, and steady recoil. The standard issue for American SWAT units.

Ethan raised the weapon and fired—"Bang! Bang! Bang!"Three controlled bursts, three zombies down.

Compared to his old Beretta M9, the M4's gunfire was lower-pitched, less explosive in sound, but the accuracy was on another level.Ethan didn't linger. He grabbed a few loaded magazines and moved toward the armory building attached to the main station.

Unsurprisingly, several zombies were hiding inside. He cleared them methodically—short, clean bursts, one by one falling to the floor.

When he reached the basement, where the police kept their secured weapons, the steel door was already ajar.It looked like someone had tried to arm themselves when the world fell apart…But judging from the blood stains at the door, they hadn't made it far.

"Guess that saves me the trouble," Ethan muttered. He pushed the heavy door open, and his eyes widened slightly.

Inside the 50-square-meter armory, weapons were stacked like an arsenal from a war movie.Racks lined with grenades, shotguns, SMGs, riot gear, shields, body armor, even a few Remington 700 sniper rifles rested on side shelves. In the corner—detonators, flashbangs, and more ammunition than one man could ever carry.

Through a side door, Ethan spotted a smaller room.Inside were confiscated melee weapons—illegal blades, machetes, katanas, switchblades, steel bats—everything once taken off the streets of Atlanta.

He frowned slightly."There's too much here… I can't carry it all. And leaving it? That's just handing an arsenal to whoever comes next."

Then an idea struck him.Ethan pulled up his map of the precinct, locating the vehicle lot on the south side.Grabbing two MP5 submachine guns, slipping on a ballistic vest, and strapping a few grenades to his belt, he set off.

When he reached the lot, his eyes lit up."Damn… now that's a beast."

Sitting in the corner was a 'Saber-X Tactical Response Vehicle', painted matte black, its reinforced body gleaming under flickering emergency lights.

A heavily modified Ford F-550 chassis, six and a half meters long, almost three meters tall, and fully armored—V10 engine, 6.8 tons, run-flat tires, and four-wheel drive.A fortress on wheels."Top-tier apocalypse gear," Ethan grinned. "Perfect for mowing down the dead."

The Saber-X came fitted with searchlights, tear gas ports, smoke launchers, and even a roof-mounted LMG.

He broke open the driver's side panel, ripped out a handful of wires, twisted two together—The engine roared to life with a deep, thunderous growl.

"Beautiful."

He drove the armored vehicle straight toward the armory, the hulking machine crunching over the corpses scattered across the parking lot.

The noise attracted attention.Hundreds of zombies turned toward the sound, screeching and swarming.

Any other vehicle might've been crushed, tires punctured, windows shattered—But the Saber-X was unstoppable. Its explosion-proof tires and reinforced glass made it a rolling tank.

"Come on then!" Ethan laughed as he stomped the accelerator.

He rammed through clusters of undead, the impact shaking the chassis. When the horde thickened, he lowered the window, pulled the pin on a grenade, and tossed it out.

"Boom!"A wall of fire and smoke erupted, sending bodies flying.

Ethan frowned."Zombie dogs now? So animals can be infected too… But why don't they attack animals? Mutation through infected meat, maybe?"

He tossed another grenade.Seven or eight in total. Each blast shredded dozens of the dead, and the system points kept climbing.

Still not satisfied, Ethan climbed up through the roof hatch, grabbed the handle of the mounted light machine gun, and pulled the trigger.

"Da-da-da-da-da!"

The weapon roared.A stream of fire tore across the parking lot, mowing through the swarm like a farmer cutting wheat.Zombies fell in droves, piling up in front of the armored truck.

Inside the police station, the survivors heard the chaos outside.

Elsa's eyes widened."That's a… a mounted LMG! That sound— it's from the tactical truck! Someone's in the parking lot!"

Captain Jack and the few remaining officers peered out through broken blinds, but the walls blocked most of their view. All they could hear was the continuous thunder of gunfire and the low rumble of an engine.

When the shooting finally died down, silence fell.

"Did… did that person die out there?" Sergeant Yana asked quietly.

"Unlikely," Elsa replied, shaking her head. "That armored truck is practically indestructible. Unless they opened the door themselves, those zombies couldn't touch them."

Jack straightened. "We can't sit here forever. Whoever's out there lured half the zombies away. Now's our best chance to move."

Food was nearly gone, and water had run out.Staying put was just waiting to die.

As Ethan loaded weapons into the Saber-X, the surviving officers prepared to break out. They opened the door carefully—The streets were almost clear.

They moved quickly, trained and alert.Unlike panicked civilians, these were police—disciplined, calm, deadly.

For the average city dweller, killing a zombie was a nightmare. For trained cops, it was just another dangerous target.

Captain Reynolds led the charge, shooting cleanly, every bullet finding a head. His expression hardened."The apocalypse isn't ending anytime soon," he muttered. "We need to arm up—fast."

But as they neared the armory, the air changed.

A low growl echoed from an alleyway. Then a massive figure stumbled out—A mutated zombie, easily seven feet tall, its swollen muscles twisting beneath rotting flesh.

It raised its head and let out a guttural, echoing roar—"ROOOAAAR!!"

The ground trembled beneath their feet. The squad froze for half a second, eyes wide.

Ethan, hearing the roar from inside the Saber-X, looked toward the noise—His grin widened.

"Well, well," he muttered. "Looks like I just leveled up to boss fights."
