The fourth day began differently. It wasn't because of the landscape, nor the weather. It was the feeling. Something heavier in the air, more constant. It wasn't just an impression. It was presence.
I was already awake when the camp began to stir. I didn't need to call anyone. One by one, everyone got up, as if they had felt the same thing.
Liriel was the first to approach.
"You noticed it too."
"Yes."
She looked around, analyzing the terrain.
"They're closer."
"Closer than before."
Scarlett came out shortly after, keeping her gaze fixed on the horizon.
"I don't like this."
"Neither do I."
Rai'kanna was already ready, as always.
"Then let's stop waiting."
Lyannis appeared behind her, stretching her arms with a faint smile.
"Finally."
Elara kept her eyes closed for a moment, focused.
"There's something moving… and it's not small."
Vespera crossed her arms.
"Then this isn't reconnaissance anymore."
"No," I replied.
"Now it's an advance."
It didn't take long for all the adventurers to be gathered. The difference was clear. No one was relaxed. No one was distracted. The previous battle had been enough to change everyone's behavior.
"Formation," I said.
No hesitation.
The lines formed with more precision than before. There were still flaws, but the foundation was solid. Rai'kanna took the front, Liriel stayed close to me, Elara at the center, and Vespera with Lyannis positioned themselves with mobility. Scarlett stayed by my side, as always.
"Let's move," I said.
The group followed.
The terrain ahead was denser, with thicker trees and less visibility. That required more attention. Every step had to be calculated.
"This isn't ideal," Liriel commented.
"It isn't," I replied.
"But they chose this terrain."
Elara nodded.
"Ambush advantage."
Lyannis spun her blade between her fingers.
"Then let's see who catches who first."
We moved forward for a few more minutes in silence.
And then…
A sound.
Not a direct attack.
But movement.
From several directions.
"Stop," I said.
The group froze immediately.
I looked around.
Nothing visible.
But the feeling was clear.
"We're surrounded," Vespera said.
"Yes."
Rai'kanna smiled faintly.
"So they're finally going to attack for real."
It didn't take long.
This time, it wasn't just goblins.
They came in larger groups, with variations. Some faster, others more resilient. And with them…
Lesser demons.
Their presence was different. Heavier, more aggressive.
"They evolved quickly," Scarlett said.
"Or they were always like this," I replied.
"Advance in formation," I ordered.
Rai'kanna broke through again, but this time she met real resistance. The enemies didn't retreat at the first impact. They held.
"Center, containment," Elara said, activating magic with precision.
Liriel began coordinating movements more firmly.
"Right side advancing!"
Lyannis was already there before the command finished, intercepting a group trying to flank. Vespera appeared right after, eliminating those who passed the first line.
Scarlett stayed by my side.
"Stronger."
"Yes."
I advanced.
The first demon came straight at me. Brutal movement, no hesitation. I cut, but felt the difference. More resistance.
"They're not like the previous ones," I said.
"Then we won't treat them like they are," she replied.
The fight intensified.
The enemies weren't just attacking. They were applying pressure. Testing limits. Trying to break the formation.
"Rear!" Lyannis shouted.
I looked quickly.
Another group.
"Vespera!"
"Already going."
She vanished and reappeared behind the enemies, breaking their advance before it could form.
At the center, Elara maintained control with precision, preventing the line from breaking. Liriel continued adjusting movements, correcting flaws, keeping everything cohesive.
Rai'kanna advanced with constant force, but now she wasn't alone. Other adventurers began to follow better, keeping up with the pace.
That was it.
Adaptation.
The group was learning.
But the enemy was too.
"Takumi," Scarlett called.
I looked ahead.
More demons appearing.
"They're not stopping," she said.
"No."
I took a deep breath.
"Reinforce the front."
We advanced together.
The pressure increased, but so did the response. With each movement more coordinated, the line held firm. Not perfect, but functional.
One of the demons charged straight at me.
Different from the others.
Faster.
More precise.
I barely dodged and counterattacked. He blocked.
I smiled faintly.
"So there's variation."
Scarlett attacked right after, opening an opening.
I took advantage.
The final strike was direct.
The body fell.
But that confirmed it.
They were evolving.
The battle continued for a few more minutes. It wasn't quick. Nor easy like the previous one. But it also didn't get out of control.
Gradually, the enemies began to retreat.
This time, more organized.
"Do not pursue," I ordered.
The group stopped.
Heavy breaths.
Attentive gazes.
Silence.
The battle was over.
But it brought no relief.
Elara was the first to speak.
"They're increasing the pressure."
"Yes."
Liriel crossed her arms.
"And improving."
Rai'kanna looked ahead.
"That was just a bigger test."
Lyannis gave a small smile.
"So the next one will be even better."
Vespera didn't comment, but her gaze said enough.
Scarlett looked at me.
"And now?"
I looked at the horizon.
"Their advance has truly begun."
No one disagreed.
Because it was clear.
This was no longer containment.
It was progress.
And if it continued like this…
It wouldn't take long before they reached closer to the kingdom.
I took a deep breath.
"From now on, we won't just react."
Everyone looked at me.
"We'll start applying pressure too."
The silence that followed wasn't doubt.
It was understanding.
The war had changed.
And we needed to change with it.
