Chapter 585 - New Offensive

The advance that morning was different from the previous days. There was no longer that feeling of reacting to something. Now we were the ones applying pressure. Every step was calculated, every direction chosen based on the pattern that was beginning to reveal itself.

The enemy wasn't just attacking. It was testing.

And we had to respond at the same level.

"If we keep this pace, we'll cross the next zone before noon," said one of the adventurers while analyzing the terrain ahead.

"We'll cross before that," I replied.

Rai'kanna let out a slight smile when she heard that.

"Finally stopped just keeping up."

"There's no time for that anymore."

Scarlett walked beside me, more alert than ever. Her gaze was no longer just on the path, but on the details around us. Tracks, small changes in the terrain, anything out of pattern.

"They passed through here," she said at one point.

I approached.

Light marks, almost erased. Irregular footprints, some deeper than others.

"Group movement," I added.

Rai'kanna crouched.

"And they're not hiding."

"No," I replied. "They're confident."

Scarlett raised her gaze.

"Or they want to be found."

That lingered in the air.

I kept walking.

"Looser formation," I ordered. "Don't stay too clustered."

The adventurers adjusted quickly. There was no more delay in execution. The war was shaping everyone there.

The path began to narrow with more trees, creating natural blind spots. A perfect environment for ambushes.

I felt it before I saw it.

A slight change in the air.

A subtle pressure.

"Contact," I said quietly.

The next instant, they appeared.

Lesser demons, but in greater numbers than usual. Coordinated movements, no hesitation, advancing straight toward us.

"They're not testing," said Rai'kanna. "They came to fight."

"Then we respond," I said.

The first impact came fast. One of the demons rushed forward, aiming directly at one of the adventurers. Before it could reach him, Scarlett was already there.

Her strike was direct, precise. No wasted movement.

The enemy fell.

But more came.

Rai'kanna advanced right after, opening space with brute force. The impact of her attacks created natural gaps, pushing the enemy line back.

"Don't let them close in!" she shouted.

"Constant pressure!" I replied.

I moved with the flow of the battle, cutting down any advance that got too close. It wasn't just strength. It was rhythm.

Scarlett kept the left side stable, preventing any flanking.

Rai'kanna dominated the center.

The adventurers began to keep up.

"They're organized!" someone shouted.

"Then break that!" I replied.

The attacks continued, but something was different. They weren't retreating like before. They didn't hesitate.

"They're holding position," said Scarlett.

"That's not common," I added.

Rai'kanna pushed deeper, opening space.

"Then let's force them to break!"

I followed her.

The enemy line began to give slightly, but not as expected. It wasn't disorganization.

It was resistance.

"They're holding!" said one of the adventurers.

"Why?" Scarlett asked.

And then I realized.

"Because they're not the main attack."

At that exact moment, a second group emerged from the flanks.

Faster.

More aggressive.

"Flank!" I shouted.

Scarlett was already moving before the order finished. She intercepted the advance on the left, preventing them from surrounding the group.

Rai'kanna turned her body, breaking the momentum of two enemies at once.

"So that's it," she said. "They were waiting for us to push forward."

"They're coordinating in layers," I said.

This was no longer a simple clash.

It was strategy.

"Reorganize!" I ordered. "Don't advance blindly!"

The adventurers stepped back a few paces, forming a more stable line. The enemy's initial momentum weakened at that moment.

Scarlett took a deep breath.

"They learn fast."

"Or someone is teaching them," I replied.

Rai'kanna smiled.

"That just makes it more interesting."

"It's not about interest," said Scarlett. "It's about survival."

I kept analyzing.

The patterns were clear now.

First contact to hold.

Second to pressure.

Flanking attempt to break.

"They want to wear us down," I said.

"Then we won't give them that," Rai'kanna replied.

"Exactly."

I took a deep breath.

"Now we respond."

I advanced again, but not directly this time. I moved along the flank, breaking the support point of the enemy group.

Scarlett followed the movement without needing an order.

Rai'kanna kept the center under pressure.

The adventurers began to follow the rhythm.

The impact was immediate.

Without their initial structure, the demons began to lose consistency. Their movements became more disorganized.

"Now!" I shouted.

The final push came with full force.

One by one, the enemies began to fall.

No space to regroup.

No time to recover control.

When the last one fell, silence returned abruptly.

Heavy breaths.

Alert gazes.

But no new movement.

Rai'kanna wiped the blood from her weapon.

"That was better."

Scarlett looked around.

"They didn't fight to the end."

"No," I replied. "They fulfilled their role."

One of the adventurers asked.

"So… that was just a part?"

"Yes."

I looked toward the north.

"They're adapting."

Scarlett stood beside me.

"And so are we."

"Yes."

Rai'kanna smiled slightly.

"Then let's see who learns faster."

I took a deep breath.

The battle had made one thing clear.

It was no longer about numbers.

It was about intelligence.

And that pointed to only one thing.

"He's watching," I said.

Scarlett didn't ask who.

She already knew.

I looked forward once more.

The war had changed levels.

And that…

Was only the beginning of their response.
