Chapter 603 - Invisible Presence

The silence of the forest was not empty.

It was attentive.

From the moment we stopped, it became clear that we were not alone. There was no hostility, but there was something constant, following every movement, every breath, every decision.

And it didn't try to hide it.

It simply observed.

I maintained a relaxed posture, without advancing. Forcing any action there would be a mistake. That forest did not react like any other place we had been through.

It… responded.

Scarlett stayed by my side, looking around carefully. "They're still watching us."

"Yes," I replied.

Rai'kanna exhaled slowly, resting her weapon on her shoulder. "They don't like invaders."

"We're not invaders," said Elara, analyzing the environment. "But we haven't been accepted either."

Lyannis remained crouched, observing one of the small spirits that stayed a few meters away. "They're curious."

"But cautious," Vespera added.

Liriel took a light step forward, her gaze softer. "They don't seem afraid… but they're evaluating."

I nodded.

That was exactly it.

There was no rush.

Not for us.

Nor for them.

The small spirit that was closest tilted its head slightly, as if trying to understand something. Its body seemed to be made of natural fragments, almost as if it were part of the forest itself.

It took a step.

Then another.

Stopped again.

Lyannis gave a faint smile. "If I move quickly, it'll run away."

"Then don't move quickly," I replied.

She raised an eyebrow, but held her position.

The spirit moved a little closer.

Now close enough to be seen more clearly.

There were no defined eyes.

And yet…

It was possible to feel its focus.

Scarlett relaxed her shoulders slightly. "They don't want to attack."

"No," said Liriel. "If they did, they already would have."

Rai'kanna crossed her arms. "Then what do they want?"

"To understand," Elara answered.

The wind passed through the trees.

Light.

Carrying a strange sensation.

It wasn't offensive magic.

Nor protection.

It was… presence.

More of them began to appear.

First one.

Then two.

Then several.

Small spirits emerged among the roots, in the trees, between the leaves. Some moved quickly, others simply watched from afar.

None advanced too much.

But none fully retreated.

"Now we're surrounded," said Vespera.

"It's not a siege," I said. "It's… a reception."

Lyannis laughed softly. "A very strange reception."

"For them, probably normal," said Elara.

Liriel gently extended her hand forward, as if trying to better sense the energy around. "They are… communicating."

Rai'kanna looked at her. "With you?"

"Not directly," she replied. "Among themselves."

I observed more closely.

It was true.

Their movements were not random.

There was a pattern.

The spirits shifted positions, approached, retreated, as if they were sharing some kind of information.

About us.

Scarlett noticed as well. "They're deciding something."

I nodded.

That was it.

It wasn't just curiosity.

It was judgment.

Lyannis, still crouched, spoke lightly. "So… what do you think?"

The small spirit in front tilted its head again.

And then…

Took another step.

This time, without stopping.

It approached until it was just a few steps away from her.

Lyannis didn't move.

Not even a little.

She simply observed.

The spirit extended something like an arm.

Stopped in the air.

As if hesitating.

Liriel took a deep breath, but didn't interfere.

Rai'kanna stayed alert.

Scarlett didn't look away.

Elara analyzed every detail.

Vespera remained still.

The small spirit moved a little closer.

And then…

Gently touched Lyannis's hand.

The contact was brief.

But enough.

A reaction passed through the air.

Not visible.

But felt.

Lyannis blinked once. "…Interesting."

"What was that?" Scarlett asked.

"I don't know how to explain it," she replied. "But… it wasn't bad."

The spirit stepped back.

And then…

Others began to approach.

More confident.

One passed near Rai'kanna, observing her weapon.

Another circled Liriel, as if analyzing the energy she carried.

A third stayed near Elara, still and attentive.

Vespera observed them all, without showing any exaggerated reaction.

Scarlett remained calm.

No sign of threat.

Just… analysis.

"They're accepting us," said Elara.

"Partially," I corrected.

There was still something missing.

Something greater.

Lyannis slowly stood up. "So this is just the beginning."

"Yes," I replied.

The wind shifted again.

This time more noticeably.

The leaves moved differently.

The air became… heavier.

Not in a negative way.

But more… present.

The small spirits stopped.

Almost at the same time.

All of them.

As if they had received a command.

Or sensed something.

They stepped back.

Not in fear.

But in respect.

Making space.

Rai'kanna noticed immediately. "Something is coming."

Liriel nodded. "Yes."

Elara narrowed her eyes. "Something bigger."

Scarlett adjusted her stance.

Vespera became even more alert.

Lyannis gave a faint smile. "Now it gets interesting."

I took a deep breath.

And understood.

This was no longer just observation.

It was… the next step.

The presence approaching was different.

Older.

Stronger.

And fully conscious.

The small spirits continued to retreat, opening a natural path among the trees.

As if they were preparing…

An arrival.

I stood still.

Waiting.

Without haste.

Because now…

We were no longer just being observed.

We had been noticed.

And someone…

Was coming to meet us.
