Chapter 951 - Before the Great War

The conclusion of the military council marked the beginning of a silent and artificial truce in the capital. With the marching orders signed and the medical supply convoys properly organized in the lower courtyards of the palace, all that remained for our group was to wait for the departure signal that would be issued at the beginning of the following dawn. I decided that we would spend these last hours secluded in the mansion, away from the frantic noise of the infantry divisions lining the royal avenues. It was a rare opportunity to empty our minds before the turmoil of direct confrontation consumed all our energy.

The afternoon progressed with a dense calm, the kind of silence that precedes the great summer storms on the continent. I walked to the winter garden located at the back of the property, a space surrounded by high ivy-covered walls and rustic stone benches that offered a clear view of the northern mountains. There, the air carried the gentle fragrance of seasonal flowers, an absolute contrast to the metallic and heavy atmosphere of the palace pavilion we had left a few hours earlier.

My companions gradually approached, seeking the same silent refuge. Elara was the first to sit beside me on the stone bench, setting aside, for the first time in weeks, the accounting reports and rune-bound leather folders. She rested her head on my shoulder with a long sigh, allowing the rigidity of her leadership posture to give way to genuine lightness.

"The planning work is completely secured, Takumi," Elara commented, closing her eyes to enjoy the warmth of the setting sun filtering through the leaves of the trees. "Every route has been checked and every quota of medicinal coral has been distributed. There is nothing more that bureaucracy can do for this alliance. Now, the fate of the provinces depends solely on our ability to break through the enemy siege."

Liriel and her assistant sat on the stone step just below us. Liriel's assistant had the notebook she had used in the Fish-Men Kingdom resting on her lap, turning through the drawings of the runic structures with a calm expression. She seemed to have found her definitive place within the group, operating as a reliable and focused pillar of technical support.

"The energy of this mansion is perfectly balanced," Liriel observed, gently spinning the crystal pendant around her neck. "The mana we collected in the depths has stabilized the mystical channels of the property. I can feel that the laboratories and underground warehouses are operating in perfect runic harmony. We are leaving with the rear protected by defenses that no demonic infiltration will be able to break."

In the center of the lawn, Lyannis and Rai'kanna spoke in low voices, sitting cross-legged on the trimmed grass. Rai'kanna cleaned the metal fittings of her combat gauntlets with a piece of flannel, moving her hands with a calmness that contrasted with her usual battle agitation. She raised her golden eyes in my direction, displaying a restrained and confident smile.

"This calm makes us think about everything we went through to get here, hero," Rai'kanna said, adjusting the leather strap of her left gauntlet. "I remember when we first crossed the gates of the Human Kingdom, full of doubts about how to structure this coalition. Today, the most powerful kings and generals on the surface depend on our orders to move their infantry divisions. We changed the board of this world, Takumi."

Lyannis nodded, running her fingers through the short strands of her red hair. "And we changed it because we knew how to listen to the rhythm of the environment, whether in the forest, at court, or underwater. Training in the ocean gave us a perception of time that the demons do not possess. They fight with hatred and brute force; we fight with surgical precision and absolute coordination."

Scarlett and Vespera approached the upper balcony, observing the group's interaction with serene expressions. Scarlett descended the stone steps without her usual combat sword at her waist, wearing only a light linen tunic that emphasized her upright posture as a veteran warrior. She sat on the edge of the low wall, crossing her arms and allowing the late-afternoon wind to move her dark hair.

"The peripheral patrols of the capital have been reinforced by the royal guard," Scarlett informed, maintaining a calm and controlled tone of voice. "The city is in absolute silence. The people realized that the political negotiations are over and that tomorrow will bring the real beginning of the defensive march. It is the perfect moment for us to rest our bodies and strengthen our bonds of loyalty."

Vespera remained standing in the shadow of the support column, her eyes fixed on the horizon where the Iron Mountain Range was beginning to be covered by the darkness of night. "The darkness coming from the north is denser today, Takumi. But our scout network is positioned at every blind spot in the secondary forest. No tactical surprise will reach us during the advance."

We took advantage of those remaining hours to enjoy romantic moments and light conversations, reclaiming the affectionate closeness that was often buried beneath the urgencies of military governance. We had dinner together in the main hall, sharing a simple meal made with fresh vegetables from the mansion's own garden, without the formal speeches or pompous toasts that had marked our farewell from the underwater palace. There was a silent and profound bond that united everyone at that table, a clear understanding that our strength lay in the integrity of that union.

After dinner, we all retired to the mansion's main bedroom. The space was comfortable, illuminated only by the remaining embers of the fireplace, which cast soft shadows across the treated wooden walls. We lay together on the large central bed, sharing the warmth of our bodies and exchanging slow caresses that expressed all the love and trust we had cultivated throughout that immense mystical journey.

I stroked Elara's hair and squeezed Scarlett's hand, feeling the steady breathing of Liriel and Rai'kanna beside me. Lyannis and Vespera remained close, their bodies relaxed by the atmosphere of security we had built within those four walls. There was no need for solemn promises of victory or exaggerated declarations of heroism; the touch of our hands and the synchronization of our heartbeats said everything that needed to be said about our mutual commitment.

The silence of the continental night settled completely, broken only by the occasional crackle of the logs in the fireplace and the constant breath of the wind coming from the mountains. Feeling the weight of tomorrow's challenges approaching, I held my companions firmly, allowing my mind to settle into a state of absolute focus.

I slowly closed my eyes, allowing sleep to envelop me while the dense, blue mana of the depths peacefully circulated through my chest. I knew that this was the last peaceful night we would have for a long time and that, as soon as the sun rose on the horizon, the call of destiny would definitively push us into the bloodiest and most decisive phase of the war against the corrupted forces of the Demon King.
