Chapter 969 - The Fifth Floor Guardian

The thick and sulfurous mist of the fourth level finally began to dissipate when we stepped onto the stone landing that marked the entrance to the fifth floor. The swampy and unstable ground gave way to an immense circular arena of polished black rock, whose edges were marked by enormous runic pillars that channeled blue flames. The ceiling, a colossal vault of carved rough stone, vibrated with a heavy magnetic frequency. The acidic humidity of the swamp evaporated from our cloaks almost instantly, replaced by a dry and oppressive heat that seemed to radiate directly from the rustic walls of that final chamber of the level.

We knew what that geometric configuration represented within the tower's ecosystem. It was the end of the first cycle of five floors. It was the first major tactical bottleneck, specifically designed to contain unwanted invaders through a high-density combat trial.

"The mana flow in this hall is entirely concentrated at a single point," Rai'kanna warned, stopping at the outer edge of the circular arena and assuming her lowest combat stance. Her ears moved tensely, picking up the vibration of condensed energy emanating from the exact center of the black stone floor. "Something gigantic is about to emerge from the underground runic barrier."

In the center of the hall, the stones began to move apart in a circular geometric pattern, revealing an abyss from which dense reddish smoke rose. With a boom that made the immense blue-flame columns sway, a colossal silhouette rose from the depths. It was the tower's first great guardian: a creature of cast iron and magmatic rock more than four meters tall, resembling an armored warrior of colossal proportions. It had no visible face; instead, beneath the visor of its black iron helmet, a concentrated flame of pure purplish demonic energy burned. In its right hand, the beast wielded a monumental war mace that seemed heavy enough to crush the densest rocks of the outer desert.

"The Fifth Floor Guardian," I murmured, drawing my sky-blue runic sword and feeling the mutual mana vibration that united my physical blade with my right arm. "Classic dungeon mechanics require us to defeat this opponent to unlock the biome transition and the first set of hidden resources of this cycle. It will be resistant to direct physical damage and disorganized frontal attacks."

"And conventional healing spells remain suppressed here," Liriel reminded us, positioning herself beside her assistant on the group's left flank, with her holy tome open. "We cannot afford to take direct impacts from that war mace. Every blow we receive will be wear and tear that we will not be able to heal immediately."

"We are not going to take a single hit," Scarlet declared with fervent determination, raising her long and heavy blade with a daring smile. "We know our roles. Takumi, order the tactical positions."

"Scarlet, with me in the vanguard to alternate the guardian's focus," I commanded quickly, keeping my voice firm to coordinate the group cleanly. "Elara and Vespera, handle long-range support to destabilize the articulation points of its legs. Lyannis and Rai'kanna, focus on terrain control to limit the opponent's mobility. Liriel and her assistant, keep the absorption runic barriers ready on our flanks."

The iron guardian released a deafening metallic roar that shook the dust from the colossal ceiling. It advanced with surprising speed for its size, raising the war mace and delivering a downward blow directly toward where I was positioned.

I leaped sideways agilely, allowing the immense metallic weapon to collide with the black rock floor. The impact opened a deep fissure in the stone and sent abrasive fragments in all directions. The instant the monster's weapon became stuck in the ground, Scarlet advanced like a lightning bolt from the opposite side. She delivered a precise horizontal strike against the guardian's left knee joint, making the dark metal resonate with a shrill crack.

The monster staggered slightly, but reacted quickly, rotating its massive body to try to strike Scarlet with its free arm. Before the attack could make physical contact, two crystal-tipped arrows fired by Elara struck the enemy's helmet slit with surgical precision, forcing the purplish flame to waver and interrupting the flow of its counterattack.

"Now, Vespera!" I shouted, using my mana to create a subtle physical boost beneath my travel boots.

Vespera, who had climbed one of the lateral stone columns with stealthy movements, leaped from the heights onto the back of the iron guardian. With her twin daggers of precise cutting, she delivered rapid strikes against the ventilation grooves on the monster's shoulder, releasing the magmatic vapor that fueled the opponent's physical strength. The guardian began to emit a sharp decompression hiss, thrashing about in an attempt to remove the assassin from its back.

While the beast was destabilized by the aerial attack, Lyannis drove her staff into the ground and channeled a current of cold wind beneath the monster's feet. The abrupt change in temperature caused the magmatic rock that composed the iron giant's lower joints to crack audibly, drastically reducing its ability to move quickly around the arena.

Rai'kanna indicated the weak points that were revealed in the enemy's structure with every rotational movement. "The central chest plate is exposed after Lyannis's cooling, Takumi! The runic core sustaining it is just beneath the third layer of black plates!"

"Understood! Scarlet, prepare the combined attack!" I ordered, channeling all my sky-blue mana into the blade of my sword, causing the energy glow to reach its maximum intensity.

Scarlet and I advanced simultaneously along the front line. The guardian attempted to deliver one final desperate sweeping sideways strike with its rustic mace, but Liriel's assistant activated a mystical retention barrier in the weapon's path, cushioning the force of the impact and allowing us to pass unharmed beneath the devastating attack.

I delivered an upward slash of extreme surgical precision, opening a definitive breach in the monster's metallic chest shell. Almost at the exact same millisecond, Scarlet completed the movement with a descending attack of crushing force, striking the brilliant core of purplish energy that sustained the guardian's artificial life.

The runic core shattered into dozens of shining pieces. The cast-iron guardian froze its movements in midair, the flame in its eyes went out permanently, and its colossal structure began to collapse onto the floor of the circular arena, fragmenting into gray dust and pieces of barren rock that were quickly absorbed by the tower's runic foundation.

The silence of the hall was immediately restored, leaving only the soft crackling of the blue-flame columns along the sides of the stone chamber.

"We did it," Elara commented, lowering her bow and allowing herself a deep sigh of obvious tactical relief. "The battle was long, but our group coordination completely nullified his brute-force advantage."

"Look over there in the back," Rai'kanna pointed out, indicating a black stone wall that began to slide smoothly upward, revealing a secret passage illuminated by golden runes. "The path to the following floors was unlocked after the guardian's defeat."

We approached the new passage and found, resting upon a white marble pedestal, a series of small high-density runic vials and spatial mapping scrolls. They were the new resources that the tower released specifically for squads that overcame the first major test of the floor cycle.

I picked up one of the scrolls, feeling that the complexity of the design of that vertical structure was revealing itself to us step by step in a logical manner. The victory against the first guardian was not merely the end of a stage; it was the physical confirmation that, regardless of the complexity of the rules created by the Demon King, our practical intelligence and our unshakable unity were the definitive tools that would rewrite the ending of that final war.

"The fifth floor has been conquered cleanly," I declared, storing the new runic potions in the tactical backpack and looking at my companions with undisguised pride. "Let's continue our ascent with the same tactical focus. The true path to the top still holds many trials for us, but we have already proven that we are capable of disarming any board placed before us."

With renewed spirits and tactical harmony strengthened by the real confrontation, the group advanced in a coordinated and silent manner toward the entrance to the sixth floor of the immense Demon King's Tower.
