Chapter 982 - The Relief of the Eighteenth Floor

The journey across the monumental spiral staircase proceeded in a calm and comforting silence. As we climbed the wide steps carved directly into the mountain's rock, the ambient temperature began to rise gradually. The freezing and thin air that burned our lungs at the top of the seventeenth floor gave way to a gentle, warm, and incredibly pleasant flow of air. The howling sound of the freezing wind and the continuous creaking of the ice plates were gradually replaced by a serene whisper of a breeze that carried with it an unmistakable scent of fertile earth, wildflowers, and damp leaves.

As we crossed the final landing of the staircase, we passed through an immense stone portico covered with vividly green vines and finally emerged onto the eighteenth level of the tower. The environmental contrast could not have been more absolute and invigorating.

Ahead of us stretched a strictly forested biome that resembled a vast untouched nature reserve. The arcane ceiling of this level shone with a warm golden radiance, perfectly imitating the radiant glow of a spring afternoon in the outside world. Colossal trees with thick trunks and leafy canopies rose dozens of meters into the air, filtering the rays of light into golden beams that drew luminous arabesques across the ground covered with soft grass and small flowering shrubs. The pleasant sound of crystal-clear streams running between rounded stones completed the scenery, providing an immediate feeling of peace and safety to our squad.

"The change in atmosphere is simply unbelievable," Vespera commented, releasing a long sigh of relief as she removed her heavy thermal hood and let her hair loose, allowing the warm breeze of the new floor to move it gently. "The air here is so light and pure that I can feel the tension leaving my muscles almost instantly."

"The temperature gradient on this level is fixed at a pleasant twenty-two degrees," Liriel's assistant informed us, loosening the ties of her wool coat and storing the heavy cloak in her backpack while consulting the measuring instruments. "The elemental ice mana flow from the previous floor was completely interrupted by the transition barrier of the staircase. This environment is perfect for the biological recovery of our group."

"Indeed, the feeling of relief is immediate," Liriel agreed, resting her sacred wooden staff on the grass and giving the team a serene smile. "Crossing an extreme cold zone consumes a significant amount of energy from the body, even when we are not directly involved in combat. The temperature of this biome will act as a natural regenerator for all of us."

"I completely approve of a strategic break before we begin exploring the routes of this level," Scarlet said, removing her thermal leather gloves and unbuttoning the collar of her armor to let her skin breathe. "We need to normalize our body temperature, rehydrate our bodies, and organize our equipment without the pressure of the snowstorm at our backs."

I approached a large fallen trunk covered in soft, velvety moss, situated beneath the welcoming shade of an ancient tree, and slowly sat down. The contact with the cool grass and the gentle warmth of that environment renewed everyone's energy.

"We will take a full one-hour break exactly at this point of the entrance," I declared in a calm and firm tone, watching my companions settle into the clearing. "Remove your heavy winter clothing, store the thermal cloaks in the cargo backpacks, and hydrate yourselves properly. We will use this interval to normalize our heart rates, adjust the straps of our armor, and check our provisions."

"Excellent decision, Takumi," Lyannis praised, releasing her transport backpack with a satisfied sigh and taking out the clean water flasks to distribute among the group. "Drinking fresh water and eating something light in this temperature will completely restore our energy for the march that comes next."

Elara and Rai'kanna walked toward the bank of a small stream of transparent water that flowed a few meters from where we were. Elara knelt on the grass, washing her face and neck with the crystal-clear water, while Rai'kanna inspected the banks and the density of the surrounding vegetation with her attentive gaze.

"The water in this stream is incredibly pure and drinkable," Rai'kanna announced, filling her leather flask and taking a refreshing sip. "There is no trace of contamination from hostile mana or monster toxins in this initial sector. We can replenish our reserves with complete safety."

"How wonderful," Elara said, drying her face with a small clean towel and smiling with genuine satisfaction. "The feeling of getting that ice dust off my skin is indescribable."

As I watched my companions relaxing serenely beneath the canopy of the leafy trees, I allowed a calm and structured thought to fill my mind. The true secret to maintaining the high performance of an elite group during a long ascent lies not only in the rigor of training or the discipline of battles, but rather in the intelligent management of moments of rest. An inexperienced commander tends to neglect rest after overcoming a major obstacle, driven by the false urgency of maintaining continuous progress. However, ignoring the fatigue accumulated from the cold and the stress of the terrain is the fastest way to make trivial mistakes on the following floors. Knowing when to stop at the exact moment the environment becomes favorable is an essential tactical virtue. The hour of rest at the beginning of the eighteenth floor was not a waste of time, but an indispensable investment in the mental clarity and physical vitality of our Alliance.

"Our supplies of dry rations remain practically untouched," Lyannis reported, sitting beside me on the moss-covered trunk after checking the arrangement of the provisions. "With the intelligent consumption of the preserved meat we made on the previous floors, we have enough food resources for more than two weeks of uninterrupted marching."

"That gives us a spectacular margin of maneuver for the next levels," I replied, accepting the fresh water flask she extended to me and taking a generous sip. "Our rate of progress is perfectly aligned with the initial plan. There is no need for reckless haste."

"The absence of immediate dangers in this entrance sector is a classic indicator of a biome transition zone," explained Liriel's assistant, who was resting against the tree's roots while updating the route map on her clipboard. "The tower grants this welcoming space so that life forms adapted to the cold do not immediately interfere with the ecology of the eighteenth-level forest."

"That means the native monsters of this place will only begin to appear when we venture deeper into the dense forest," Vespera added, adjusting the leather straps of her combat tunic.

"Exactly," I confirmed, standing up and stretching my arms with an invigorating feeling of readiness. "And when that happens, we will be fully restored to deal with any threat without any residual fatigue from the cold of the previous floor."

Scarlet approached the group without the heavy thermal accessories, wearing her usual tactical armor fitted perfectly to her body. She lightly touched the hilt of her longsword and looked at me with a determined gleam in her eyes.

"The rest period fulfilled its purpose perfectly, Takumi," Scarlet stated. "Everyone is refreshed, hydrated, and ready to resume formation."

"Excellent," I ordered, watching Liriel, her assistant, Lyannis, Elara, Rai'kanna, and Vespera stand up in perfect synchrony, ready for the departure signal. "Reorganize the backpacks with the thermal clothing properly stored. Assume the standard exploration formation for forested terrain. We will begin navigating the trails of the eighteenth floor."

With the squad completely renewed, nourished, and encouraged by the perfect transition between environments, we took our first steps beneath the golden light of the leafy trees, advancing with light, firm, and confident steps toward the heart of that new and welcoming level of the tower.
