Chapter 987 - The Marble Key and Progress to Floor 21

The detailed search of the central chamber of the twentieth floor unfolded in perfect order and silence. The air in the great hall, previously permeated by dense heat and the smell of sulfur from demonic magic, had cooled considerably with the dissipation of the General's arcane dust. The lilac-toned illumination emanating from the basalt walls had returned to a stable and gentle glow, allowing our team to examine every inch of the walls and the throne's structure with absolute clarity.

While Elara and Rai'kanna traversed the outer edges of the circular perimeter, checking the grooves in the floor, I leaned over the left side of the great black basalt throne. Liriel kept the gem of her sacred staff projecting a golden and focused light onto the base of the rock, while her assistant adjusted the magnifying lens to follow the lines of the masonry.

"There is an irregularity in the fitting of the stone blocks on this side of the pedestal," Liriel's assistant commented, pointing the tip of a metal stylus toward a marble joint that seemed subtly different from the rest of the masonry. "The density of the rock at this specific point presents an internal cavity sealed by a small pressure mechanism."

"Let me check," I replied, approaching and running my fingers over the surface of the rock.

I pressed firmly on the relief carved into the pedestal. A soft and resonant metallic click echoed across the marble floor, and the small stone plate slid smoothly to the side, revealing a rectangular opening perfectly shaped to the exact size of the black marble runic stone we had recovered from the General's remains.

"We found the release point!" Liriel announced in a calm and satisfied tone, drawing the attention of the rest of the team who were inspecting the distant sectors.

Scarlet, Lyannis, Vespera, Elara, and Rai'kanna quickly approached the throne, regrouping the formation around the pedestal.

"Excellent search work," Scarlet praised, observing the marble groove. "The mechanism was subtly hidden within the architecture of the pedestal itself. An inattentive explorer could spend hours searching the outer walls without ever noticing this opening in the throne."

"The time of day also calls for a quick break for food and reorganization before we proceed," Lyannis observed, checking her tactical pocket watch and inspecting the supplies in her bag. "It is exactly noon. A quick consumption of our prepared preserves and a sip of clean water will ensure that we begin the ascent to the twenty-first floor with our physical disposition completely renewed."

"I agree with Lyannis's suggestion," I declared, taking a small package of dried meat cut into thin strips and a canteen of fresh water from my saddlebag. "We will have a ten-minute meal right here while we prepare the activation of the runic stone. Eating at regular intervals is crucial to maintaining metabolic stability during long periods of navigation."

We sat in a compact circle on the clean steps of the throne pedestal. The simple midday meal, consisting of seasoned dried meat, travel biscuits, and pure water, passed in an atmosphere of serene companionship. The absence of unnecessary haste and the calmness of the environment allowed everyone to enjoy the moment peacefully, catching their breath and discussing the logistics of the march.

"Judging by the time count and the distance traveled," Vespera commented, taking a sip from her canteen and looking toward the entrance of the hall, "we are maintaining a truly phenomenal climbing speed. The report of the S-Rank adventurer who preceded us on this route mentioned that this twentieth floor had a safe room and secure anchoring point for prolonged rest."

"Yes, I also remember that note in his exploration journal," Elara interjected, adjusting the leather straps of her light armor. "However, we traversed the entirety of the initial gallery and the central chamber and did not see any recording panel or protected resting chamber on this level."

I approached the throne's groove while holding the black marble stone, allowing a brief analytical reflection to organize itself in my mind. The discrepancy between the reports of veteran explorers and the reality we were encountering in the tower was not a recording error, but rather a demonstration of the living and adaptive nature of the Demon King's architecture. The tower alters the arrangement of its support rooms and the location of its safe points according to the rhythm, mana density, and behavior of the groups challenging it. Expecting a path to remain exactly identical over time is a dangerous illusion for any commander. A group's true safety does not depend on the existence of a predetermined safe point on the map, but rather on the team's ability to maintain self-sufficiency, resource control, and adaptability in the face of changes in the terrain.

"The tower is a structure in constant tactical mutation," I explained to the group, turning toward Vespera and Elara with serenity. "The safe panels and secure points change position as the floor's energy reconfigures itself after the fall of a boss. We cannot depend on fixed markers left behind by other groups. Our preparation and our attention to the present are our only true safe point."

"Understood, Takumi," Vespera replied, nodding with an expression of deep respect and clarity. "Your reading of the environment is always impeccable."

"Everything is ready for the release of the passage," Liriel's assistant reported, keeping her notepad ready to record the exact moment the mechanism was activated.

I fitted the black marble runic stone into the opening in the throne pedestal. The artifact slid smoothly to the bottom of the cavity, fitting with millimetric and perfect precision. At that same instant, the stone's silver engravings shone with radiant intensity, sending a continuous line of light that traveled through the joints of the floor and climbed the walls of the central chamber's dome.

The deep sound of stone gears moving echoed from behind the back wall of the arena. The colossal basalt rock that formed the rear panel of the hall began to rise slowly, revealing a wide and illuminated transition portal leading to a great spiral staircase of white marble ascending upward.

"Passage successfully unlocked!" Scarlet announced, standing up and adjusting the grip of her longsword with a confident smile. "Access to the twenty-first floor is completely open to our squad."

"Energy analysis of the staircase confirms a clean mana flow with no traces of traps or immediate hostile presence," Liriel reported, raising her staff and leading the support line alongside her assistant.

"Put away the supplies, collect the backpacks, and assume the standard marching formation," I ordered in a clear and resolute voice, taking the lead of the vanguard at the front of the group. "The twentieth floor has been overcome with absolute excellence. Now, we will advance to the forest floors of the third climbing block."

My companions responded with immediate readiness, organizing their positions within seconds. With the meal completed, our energy renewed, and the passage properly opened by the marble key, our squad took its first steps onto the white marble staircase, leaving the throne hall behind and advancing with unwavering determination toward the twenty-first level of the tower.
