Chapter 995 - The Battle and the Final Strike

The monumental chamber of the twenty-fifth floor had transformed into a true cauldron of arcane energy and incandescent heat. The air saturated with sulfur vapor and waves of heat seemed to bend the light of the blue-flamed torches scattered throughout the side galleries, but the precision of our squad did not suffer any fluctuation. The Demonic Dragon, sensing the destabilization of its defenses after the combined assault of the vanguard and the precise shots from the rear guard, roared with blind fury. The sound echoed through the black rock walls with such intense vibration that tiny fragments of stone broke loose from the high ceiling and fell like rain onto the dark marble floor.

The beast violently beat its heavy wings, attempting to lift its colossal bulk above the arena to regain control of the space and launch another barrage of purple flames. However, the flow of magical energy within the chamber was no longer responding solely to its command. The creature began draining the free mana present in the hall in a desperate effort to restore the searing aura of its chest, creating a vortex of invisible forces that pulled the air from the surroundings and attempted to destabilize the combatants' footing.

"The creature is attempting to monopolize the surrounding mana to shield its neck and activate an area discharge!" Liriel's assistant warned, keeping her voice steady while operating the measuring device at the rear. "The magical density around its chest has risen exponentially, but this is leaving its lower joints vulnerable!"

"It will not have time to complete that channeling!" I declared in a firm and calm tone, stepping forward as my magical armor shone with a brilliant silver pulse. "Vespera, Liriel, cut off the hall's energy convergence! Elara, lock down the left wing!"

"Understood!" Liriel replied, raising her sacred staff with both hands. The gem of the artifact emitted a pulse of golden light that expanded in concentrated waves, intercepting the vortex's lines of force and dispersing the mana the beast was attempting to absorb.

Simultaneously, Vespera cast an opposing wind-pressure spell, creating an invisible barrier that canceled out the vacuum generated by the monster. Without the arcane energy supply from the environment, the flames in the Demonic Dragon's chest flickered, decreasing in intensity for one crucial second.

Elara did not waste the moment. From atop a gray marble column on the left, she pulled the string of her heavy bow to its maximum limit and fired an enchanted arrow imbued with rigid-piercing magic. The projectile cut through the air in a trail of silver light and struck the main joint of the beast's left wing with millimetric precision, embedding itself deeply between the scales. The dragon let out a howl of pain, losing its balance in flight and crashing heavily onto its knees on the marble floor.

The impact of the colossus's fall shook the entire structure of the chamber, spreading a cloud of dust and sparks across the ground.

"Now, vanguard!" I commanded, launching myself forward in a burst of pure speed.

Scarlet advanced on my right in perfect synchronization, her long sword emitting a sharp hum as it traced an upward arc that severed the tendons of the monster's right foreleg, preventing it from rising. Rai'kanna, emerging from the opposite side like a swift shadow, delivered a sequence of three rapid cuts with her dual blades to the side of the guardian's thigh, forcing it to lower its head toward the ground.

The massive neck of the Demonic Dragon, covered in ebonite plates that now displayed dull cracks, became completely exposed along my trajectory.

Projecting the entire flow of energy from my armor into the blade of the runic sword, I raised the weapon's resonance to its absolute peak. The sacred metal shone with blinding intensity, an aura of white and silver light that completely nullified the dimness of the hall.

As I crossed the final meters of distance toward the beast's neck, I allowed a calm, clear, and deeply mature reflection to occupy my thoughts. A battle against a guardian of the highest tier is not won through excessive brute force, but through the ability to read the enemy's mechanics and orchestrate each companion's abilities like the notes of a perfect symphony. Every arrow fired by Elara, every barrier raised by Liriel, every gust of wind from Vespera, and every surgical strike from Scarlet and Rai'kanna converged at this exact millisecond. The function of the final blow is not to flaunt personal power, but to crown the collective efficiency and unwavering trust of a team that operates as a single organism. Victory on the twenty-fifth floor was not merely the end of a difficult confrontation; it was the practical demonstration that our tactical doctrine and cohesion surpassed any obstacle the tower could place in our path.

Leaping from the marble floor with a firm impulse, I rose above the monster's head. I tilted my body and delivered a single, definitive horizontal slash, concentrating all the runic energy along the blade's cutting edge.

The sword cut through the air with a clean and crystalline sound, passing through the layer of rigid scales and the beast's flesh as if cutting thin cloth. The beam of silver light split the creature's structure along a perfect line, severing the right side of its neck and instantly ending the guardian's life.

The Demonic Dragon released one final muffled breath as its colossal structure collapsed lifelessly onto the dark floor. Within a few seconds, the massive body of the beast began to disintegrate into a dense mist of purple particles and arcane ash that was gradually absorbed by the raised mosaic of the hall.

Silence once again reigned over the immense chamber of the twenty-fifth floor, interrupted only by the soft sound of our breathing and the residual crackling of the flames in the side torches. The scorching heat and sulfur odor quickly dispersed, replaced by a light and purified breeze that circulated throughout the entire environment.

At the exact point where the colossus's head had rested before disintegrating, a rhythmic metallic glow caught everyone's attention. In the center of the flat floor, there rested an artifact carved from smooth gray stone, engraved with blue runic inscriptions that glowed softly.

"The guardian has been successfully neutralized!" Liriel's assistant announced, releasing a long sigh of relief and adjusting the frame of her glasses while looking at the panel. "The target's mana signature has completely disappeared! Sector twenty-five is clear!"

Scarlet wiped the blade of her long sword with a graceful movement before sheathing it, directing a look filled with respect and admiration toward me.

"An impeccable strike, Takumi," Scarlet said, approaching with calm steps. "The execution of the strategy left not the slightest opening for enemy retaliation."

"Everyone's work was simply magnificent," I replied, deactivating the maximum flow of the magical armor and lowering the runic sword, feeling the sense of accomplishment warming my chest. "Every containment maneuver and every attack by the group occurred at exactly the right moment."

"Look there on the floor," Lyannis pointed out, approaching from the rear guard with her axe resting on her shoulder and indicating the glowing artifact. "It is another runic stone, just like the one we found on floor twenty."

I approached the object and leaned down to pick it up. The gray marble stone was smooth to the touch and emitted a warm and pleasant energy, perfectly stable. The blue inscriptions on the artifact formed complex symbols that corresponded to the same arcane language seen on the tower's transition gates.

"This is the access key to the twenty-fifth level," Liriel stated, standing beside me and observing the characters engraved on the marble. "Its acquisition confirms that we have overcome the supreme challenge of this sector."

"Excellent," I declared, carefully placing the stone artifact into the pocket of my leather breastplate. "We have completed the most complex confrontation at this point of our ascent. Now, let us inspect the sides of the hall and locate the registration panel."

With victory secured, the guardian defeated, and the runic key in our hands, our squad gathered in the center of the purified hall, ready to take the next step toward completing that stage of the journey.
