Chapter 1009 - The Floor 28 Boss

The crossing over the stone bridges suspended above the dark waters of the twenty-eighth floor continued for some time until we finally found a wide platform of solid rock, perfectly isolated from the underground currents and surrounded by walls of solid granite that offered formidable natural protection against any stealthy assault. The location displayed a well-defined circular structure, ideal for establishing a strategic foothold before proceeding toward the heart of that aquatic sector. The fatigue accumulated from the recent battle against the amphibious warriors made an extended pause imperative for recovering energy, replenishing fluids, and organizing the squad tactically. As soon as we stopped in the center of that natural chamber, each member began carrying out their usual tasks with the efficiency of those who shared years of successful campaigns in the depths of the tower.

"This place seems safe enough for us to set up camp and catch our breath," I commented, temporarily removing my combat gloves and shaking my shoulders to relieve the accumulated muscle tension in my arms. "Vespera and Lyannis, conduct a thorough sweep with detection magic through the cracks in the walls to make sure there are no hidden passages or latent magical traps nearby."

"Leave it to us, Commander," Lyannis promptly replied, nodding to Vespera as the two separated to begin the detailed inspection of the rocky perimeter around the chamber. "We won't let any trace of residual mana or alarm rune that could compromise our safety during the rest period go unnoticed."

While the two carried out the sweep, I approached the edge of the platform where the stone structure met the translucent water of the underground lake. The pale reflection of the crystalline ceiling shone on the liquid surface like a distant constellation, creating a scene of melancholic beauty amid the relentless hostility of the dungeon. I allowed a serene and contemplative thought to occupy my mind for a few moments. Leadership in the depths of a legendary labyrinth was not merely about delivering precise blows or coordinating complex military strategies; above all, it required the ability to cultivate inner calm so that the weight of isolation and the constant flirtation with danger would not erode the group's sanity. Looking at that silent expanse reminded me that our journey was a search not only for power, but for the preservation of everything we considered sacred on the surface.

"The area is completely clear," Vespera announced, returning from the inspection accompanied by Lyannis with a relaxed expression on her face. "No anomalies detected on the walls or ceiling. We can rest peacefully."

"Excellent," I thanked her, turning toward the center of the chamber where Liriel's assistant and the other companions were already organizing the supplies taken from the magic bag. "Let's light a quick fire to warm the meal and make sure everyone gets their body temperature back to the ideal level after the humidity of that bridge."

With the help of the dry and compact firewood stored inside the dimensional artifact and a controlled ignition spell cast with surgical precision, a welcoming campfire soon crackled, its golden flames illuminating the tired yet determined features of each woman in the squad. We sat around the improvised fire, sharing nutritious broths, soft bread, and slices of meat perfectly preserved by the magic bag's temporal stasis. The meal proceeded in an atmosphere of disciplined relaxation, with observations exchanged about the behavior of the monsters we had faced and predictions about what we might encounter in the following meters of that aquatic dungeon.

After the meal was finished, I felt the need to personally inspect the immediate surroundings of the chamber to assess the terrain's topography before the tower's simulated nightfall. As soon as I stood up and announced my intention to walk through the adjacent corridors for a while, Scarlet quickly rose from her place, adjusting the sheathes of her daggers at her waist with a fluid and decisive movement.

"I'm going with you," she stated in an unwavering tone, sketching a discreet smile that mixed companionship and readiness for combat. "There is no way I'm letting the commander walk around alone on an unknown floor right after an ambush."

"Your company is always welcome, Scarlet," I replied with an affirmative nod, knowing perfectly well that trying to dissuade her would be a pointless waste of time. "Let's just take a quick walk around the perimeter and return before the rest of the group finishes organizing the camp."

We left the main chamber behind, walking side by side through a narrow and silent stone corridor that followed the edge of the underground lake. The faint light from the crystals cast our shadows in distorted forms against the rough walls, while the muffled sound of our footsteps punctuated the heavy silence of that sector. As we advanced with heightened senses, I reflected on that woman's unwavering dedication. The loyalty demonstrated by every member of the squad was the true shield protecting us from the tower's invisible dangers, transforming suicide missions into systematic expeditions of conquest.

Without prior warning, the atmosphere around us changed drastically. The air, previously humid and stagnant, suddenly became heavy and freezing, filled with such intense mana density that it seemed to make breathing difficult. At the same instant, the surface of the water a few meters ahead of us exploded into a shower of thick droplets and white foam, revealing a colossal silhouette that rose from the depths with a deafening roar that shook the cave walls.

It was the boss of the twenty-eighth floor: a monstrous entity with the upper half of its body resembling a muscular humanoid with gray, scaly skin, equipped with four arms armed with natural bone blades, while the lower half merged into a gigantic serpentine tail that whipped the water with indescribable violence. Its yellow eyes glowed with a malevolent intelligence, immediately fixing themselves upon us with an ancient hunger that would freeze the blood of any ordinary warrior.

"Stay exactly where you are, Scarlet," I ordered in a calm voice, drawing my sword with a swift movement that made the steel sing through the dark air. "Leave this monster to me."

"Careful, Takumi! He's much faster than the minions we fought on the bridge," Scarlet exclaimed, retreating only one step to make room, keeping her daggers in hand and ready to intervene if the creature showed any sign of escaping my reach.

The floor boss emitted a shrill guttural sound and advanced like lightning, delivering a simultaneous quadruple strike with its bone blades in a desperate attempt to slice us apart before we could react. I instantly channeled the power of my golden armor, allowing a radiant and impenetrable aura to envelop my body like a second skin of pure energy. The creature's blades struck my defense with titanic force, generating bright sparks and shockwaves capable of cracking the stone floor around us, but the barrier remained completely intact, absorbing the entire impact without the slightest sign of wear.

Taking advantage of the fraction of a second in which the monster remained unbalanced by the momentum of its failed attack, I advanced with a speed that defied conventional physics. I spun my body in a perfect arc, infusing the sword's blade with a maximum charge of internal energy that made the weapon shine like a falling star. I delivered a devastating vertical blow that cut through the air with surgical precision, slicing through the floor boss's scaly armor from one side to the other with impressive ease.

The creature froze in the middle of the movement, its four arms paralyzed in the air and an expression of absolute astonishment stamped across its grotesque features. One second later, a flash of pure light erupted from the deep cut opened across its torso, disintegrating the colossus into thousands of shining particles that slowly dissipated into the cave's humid air. With a muffled metallic thud, a gleaming object fell directly onto the stone slabs, rolling gently until it stopped at my feet.

I calmly bent down and picked up the item: it was an ornate key made of blackened silver metal, engraved with complex runes that pulsed with subtle magical energy. It was the key that would open the path to the next floor, obtained with an ease that demonstrated how much our power had grown since the beginning of that long and arduous journey toward the top of the tower.
